I would suggest building it in a mountain or underground, because you get blocks from mining out the space and you dont need extra blocks to build the actually platforms
Just FYI this works fine in 1.15.2. Built this to keep up the rocket supply on our private server after we started getting elytra. For the pads use carpet, use trapdoors on the ceiling. instead of half slabs and in the middle use a single magma block with a hopper minecart underneath with a hopper below that into a chest. I built this into our strip mine at diamond level under the base and have 3 levels at the moment but it's easy to hollow out. Currently it's not producing tons of creepers but it's steady. It's likely there are still caves above it.
FIX FOR NOT SPAWNING: The only thing I would add to this awesome video is, to start the build from a Y level of 200, that way the spawning system wont be effected by the mobs on the ground and in caves. This is the main problem people are having as well I had when I first built this mob spawner. Please if this is helpful thumbs up so others can see.
Watching Zisteau set up a mob spawner in his new SSP series brought me here... This was the first Etho video I ever watched, now over 2 years ago. I can't believe it's been that long haha, and he's been RUclips-ing twice that! Anyway, thanks for the great vids Etho! :)
OK guys, it still works in the the newest versions of Minecraft. The only change is that you need to make the kill drop 30 blocks high instead of 24 because as of 1.7.2 witches will spawn in it and they have 13 hearts. If it's not working for you, there are some unlit places within 128 blocks of where you're AFKing.
Great job Etho, this may be an old system now (nearly a year old) but it works a treat. I've torched all the caves and holes near our base, and I'm getting about 50 mobs a minute.I owe you one for my now brimming chest of TNT. And the best thing about this system is the simplicity of the water. Anyone who wants to turn it into an xp farm, put 2 dispensers with water and sign below 4 blocks from the bottom floor, and make a killing room/piston 22 blocks below them this works a treat for me. :)
God I miss old Etho. I’m happy that he’s really popular now but he sounds so much more energetic, not in the smooth, calming voice he did before he improved his editing style.
This is the very first video I watched and it's how I discovered your channel. I instantly liked your style and I'm subscribed ever since. I learned so much from you and even though I don't play Minecraft anymore myself, it's always fun to see you having a great time and coming up with crazy ideas.
I just built one of these babies in 1.7.2 and it works great! make sure you build it up very very high, as this increases spawn rates and also light the roof when you are done. Be warned as well, mine has a drop of about 24 blocks and it will not kill witches, as they have more health than normal mobs. Also I built on an amplified world in a relatively flat area, starting at y=215 I built 4 levels. Thanks Etho!
I managed to enlarge this design to 35x35. There is also 4 holes for mobs to drop through to increase efficiency. You can also link up the holes so that they drop in a 3x3 area without sacrificing efficiency. If you want me to make a video showing this I will be more than glad to make one.
If anyone wants spiders to spawn, make the water 2 by 2! Hmm, so for the current design... gotta try that in Minecraft. Oh, if you want endermen, remember that they need to fall 40+3 (endermen has 20 hearts) = 43 blocks to die. Mobs with 10 hearts (creepers, zombies, skeletons) will die when they fall 23 blocks, provided that they do not wear any armor. You could even make a mob xp farm, where you leave mobs with only half a heart when they fall (22 blocks for 10 heart mobs, 42 blocks for endermen), that is what I am doing on my games!
here it is, the video that introduced me to minecraft. i don't know what my life would even look like today if i wouldn't have found this vid, so thanks.
I finished building a 10 story version of this a few days ago. I haven't done extensive lighting in the caves in my area and I am getting reasonable drops. So far, I've got about eight stacks each of bones, arrows and gun powder, plus a few witch drops. I am pleased enough with it that I will be building these ASAP in any survival world I play. It is not a good AFK system as the mobs move less when you AFK., so keep busy. Thanks for the great video Etho :)
Ok I am wondering if there isn't an issue in 1.8 mob spawning behavior because I built this high enough to reach max build height and I get 0 mobs spawning . . did they maybe change the range? cause the ground isnt lit up but its WAY more than 128 blocks from the ground . . if they changed the distance that could be why . . or is my game just glitched . . cause by all means this should work. . I should note that it works fine in 1.7.4 . .but switch to 1.8 and it all stops
Yeah, I built mine over the ocean near max build height and couldn't get a single mob to drop on an empty SMP server. Oddly it works just fine in my single player creative world.
So weird . . I was considering trying it on my 1.8 realms cause the mob spawning seems to be behaving a bit differently . . and I am getting A LOT of slime spawns in my slime farm I just recently built so. . IDK I don't want to waste the time and effort to build something that doesn't want to work . .
There is no need where I had built it was at build height . . there need only be no spawn-able areas within a 128 black radius from the spawn pads . . and seeing as the nearest cave is over 200 blocks from the build . . there is no need . . the issue is that it works fine in 1.7 but something changed in 1.8 that made it not work . .
XdarkvampyreX Oh sorry I missed that in your original comment. :P Hmm I dunno... I haven't tried it in 1.8 yet but I've noticed incredibly low spawn rates in general since the patch. Maybe there's a bug with spawning conditions?
I got a problem :/ I've tried to build this out of wood and everything looks okay to me, but monsters aren't spawning. Those anyone have on solution for this?
Are you on SMP? Are you 20 blocks near it? If yes to any of these then other players online with take mobs away from the mobs cap. If you're 20 blocks away from it mobs won't spawn in an area that wide around you.
I used this design and modified it a little to make an XP generator. I offset the levels by one block as I went up so the center drop hole is not vertical from the top. This allows the mobs to be fed to the lower level and then drop with just enough life to make them a one hit kill. Thanks Etho!
Thanks! It works great. I tried 4 different designs, and I'm mad this is the last one I tried. I only lit about 1/4 of my caves and its giving me around 10-15 stacks of gunpowder when I go AFK overnight.
With all the "Efficient" mob farms today, this is still one of the best mob systems to build in a survival world. Everything else uses water streams getting dispensed wither roses or pistons all of which cause lag, or takes a long time to complete. This simple design is lag free and Logical. The only thing better is to use mob AI tracking but that can be a pain to set up.
I wanted to say that if you put a cage with water in it at the bottom with a an opening to kill the mobs you can make an xp farm as well(mobs dont drop xp if you didnt hit them).this does take alot of block. i decided to use nether bricks AND MY GOD. i put houras into the grinder for THREE layers. just use cobble or dirt...itll be easier also.
thank you Ethos! i have been looking for a simple but nice mob spawner. i just made this on my test world, and it works awesomely. i hate dealing with redstone! thanks again!
just tested it in creative and yes it still works and also the skytrap model does too so you do not have to do massive caving to improve spawn rates just build it 128 blocks above any land withing a 128 block radius as not to have spawns on the land below. hope this helps and happy farming!
+Stechkin; Witches need to be dropped about 30 blocks. Also, build the dropper as high as possible to increase spawn rates ( no lighting caves). My lowest level is at Y:170.
I now have this set-up in my main survival world on the PC Minecraft, and despite the fact that I only have 1 level (so far) it still works brilliantly :) The most mobs I had at once was about 85-90 I think, but it did require some waiting about first, which is why its better to build more than just a single level of it haha! I built it away up in the sky too at Y: 200, as its above an Ocean biome and far enough away from the caves under the sea bed to stop mobs spawning down there too!
He still uses this exact design in his LP on 1.5.2. It does work, just make sure you've done everything correctly. Most of the people here probably haven't lightened up the caves around the spawner to increase efficiency.
Make sure you've lit up all the caves in the area. The numbers you get spawning will be affected by how much underground you've cleared, since more light underground will mean higher chance of them spawning in your spawner.
works great in 1.10.2 I'm playing sky factory 3 and made a couple modifications. made each floor 3 high so enderman can spawn. I made piller on the center of each pad so spiders cant spawn. also i use vector plates to move mobs to the canals filled with witch water. ty for design works awesome
They have are able to wander for a while before that kicks in. Then they despawn a short while after that. I've built this system and for all the resources you spend on it, it works extremely well. I build mine out of snow blocks using a snow machine so it cost me nothing bar the ladders and half slabs. I was getting around 50-70 mobs per minute with all caves lit.
Yes, but you need to put vines like 2 blocks below the bottom layer, this will catch all the monsters on their way down and reset their fall damage built up. This way, the monsters from the top layer wont be falling 50+ blocks, instead all mobs from all layers will be falling 23 :)
A suggestive improvement: If, instead of 4 streams into the centre, there was one cross shaped stream to each edge. I think it would be better because this should reduce clogging and also increase the speed they are killed.
Nice and great mobs system, but i think with a small change in the design you can help mobs fall faster. Replace the single hole with a larger hole 3x3 but dont change anything else water canal will be 1 large. (new hole will have a (t) shape) --- Only replace water source in the corner of the wall and under the spawn pad. --- Sorry i could not make a video to show you guys :( but im sure it will works with a minimum of change in the design
If you want an XP farm, just make the hole 23 blocks high, and build a shelter around where they land. They will be so low on health, it'll take 1 hit to kill them, and you will get their drops AND their XP.
Dude, you can modify it so it's also compatible for spiders by increasing its x and z sizes. It's more expensive for the block you're using to make the pads and frame, and for water, but it's worth it if you don't have a bow or fishing rod.
I just built this on a massive scale in a multiplayer server and forgot to that other mob spawns affect it. 20 stacks of cobblestone later and I get 1 drop every 20 minutes. Yayy!!!
This works in 1.8.1 just built it. Built 115 blocks above land then a afk platform 24 blocks above that. only two layers built, not the fastest mob farm but great early game farm cheap and effective. Half double chest full in bout 45 minutes
You need to get a minecart railway to go around ur soawner, if u have 10 layers, ur to far away for the 10th layer to work. So with a minecart railway around it u keep them spawning everywhere
Yes, it works in 1.5.1 and NO YOU DON'T NEED SNOW! You can use whatever block you want, just not any half-slabs or stairs. An easy block could be cobble or even wood. I would suggest to not use dirt because if you make one where endermen can get to it, it can get ruined because they can steal dirt blocks.
I would suggest building a modification shown in a video called "Idea para mejorar trampa Skyblock Tonacho & Chincheto". It's in Spanish, but it should still be useful.
Mobs can spawn in darkness. The goal is to reduce the amount of darkness underground so that there is a better chance for the mobs to spawn in the tower.
So first make a lever to prevent the mobs falling. Now pull a lever for mobs to fall 24-26 blocks than witches put a lever to flip than make the witches fall. :)
Yep. Thats just about right, the reason why I said his SMP and Single Player. you can see just how much he lit up for his caves he lived in for his mob traps.
Question, How does this work for enderman wouldn't they just teleport away? Or does it just slowly collect ender pears after they die and the pearl floats to the bottom?
You don't need a mob spawner block to spawn mobs. If your mob spawning structure is one of the few dark places in your world, mobs will be forced to spawn there.
modify the fall damage, it takes 23 blocks to kill anything I believe, so just make it a 22 block fall and then 1 hit kill them if that doesn't work, check on the wiki for fall damage and stuff
No, definitely not, but snow blocks is easy to get using snow farms, but you can use cobblestone and wood or whatever you want, as long as its a solid block.
Nice design but endermen have higher health and need 48 blocks fall to die you could also make a water trap a the bottom to make each mob fall from the same 23 block height in order to turn it into an xp farm aswell
Just make sure the water isn't going over the drop hole on any of your layers. I made that mistake when I first built mine and alot were living. Failing that and its just something weird with the server your on, set up a piston and lever at mob head height then just pull it to kill'em off. Easy peasy.
Of course it will, there's no reason that it wouldn't. The only problem I can think of is an excessive amount of zombies taking up all the available spawns.
Guys just saying but these types of mob farms don't really go well on most servers with lots of people 50+ Its a bit hard to explain the reasons why but it just doesn't, so don't go wasting your time, just find a mob spawners and make 23 (24 for instakill) block fall.
the area needs to be lit up because those chunks are loaded. in your server the mobs are spawning on many different other places. I think that is the reason why you do not get many spawns.
this mob system is timeless, goddamn.
it works on every, single, version. from infdev until 1.18.2
you're freaking amazing, ethos.
*Etho

@danjel6438i built it in beta 1.7.3 and its not working for me did you test it?
Unless you want spiders... XD
If anyone is wondering about the resources I counted 722 Blocks for building and 12 Slabs.
Bill Harris Thx mate
Bill Harris So 11 stacks of blocks + 18 blocks, plus another 6 blocks to turn into 12 slabs.
I would suggest building it in a mountain or underground, because you get blocks from mining out the space and you dont need extra blocks to build the actually platforms
why did you count he said it in the video
If you make five layers though its about 45 stacks.
Just FYI this works fine in 1.15.2. Built this to keep up the rocket supply on our private server after we started getting elytra. I sure hope I will be able to make a functioning mob farm one day...

There's a weird bug that doesn't spawn mobs which is easily fixed by changing render distance to about 12 or higher
why only add bonus spawning spots on top of 4 of the waters couldent you do all 8?
Dub 420 maybe mobs cant spawn on those spots? I dont know tho

Endermen will take your blocks and teleport out when they touch the water. Still a really good design.
If you put hoppers in the place where the lamp and stairs were, you can make it automatic.
Dude, you can modify it so it's also compatible for spiders by increasing its x and z sizes. It's more expensive for the block you're using to make the pads and frame, and for water, but it's worth it if you don't have a bow or fishing rod.
Lol I'm not used to Etho speaking in a monotone. Etho's gotten alot better over these past few years.
put a small tube with vines at the top 23 blocks up it will slow their fall, put buttons under the vines so they dont grow
You need to be closer to them for them to walk off of the platform. If you are too far away they stand still.
I searched on the minecraft wiki, this is what is says:
"Mobs can spawn on top of upside down slabs and on double slabs."
Why you dont use a 2x2 waterstream ? then there is less strugling between the mobs and spiders could spawn as well ...
This design looks like my design and is almost the same. I can tell you, it works very good!
I know this is old, but thanks Etho! This is amazing.
Works really well in my test world. Now to build it in my Xbox 360 smp :), Thanks Etho!.
It works on the Xbox. You just need to light up everything within a 144 block radius to make mobs spawn faster (FTDubDesigns's tip).
I would suggest building a modification shown in a video called "Idea para mejorar trampa Skyblock Tonacho & Chincheto". It's in Spanish, but it should still be useful.
Mobs can spawn in darkness. The goal is to reduce the amount of darkness underground so that there is a better chance for the mobs to spawn in the tower.
to prevent spiders from spawning since spiders has a 2x2x1 hit box and half slabs prevent mobs from spawning on it
Because for example you can remove the water and the blocks under it and the mobs will just fall down.
So first make a lever to prevent the mobs falling. Now pull a lever for mobs to fall 24-26 blocks than witches put a lever to flip than make the witches fall. :)
if you want to improve the efficiency of this you NEED to put trapdoors on the edges of the pads
Great video!!! I liked! And I have already subscribed to your channel!!
Make a button or open fence gate at the hole the mob are falling in so that they wont try to stay in the spawner thing.
Still my favorite mob farm. Just made one in Skyfactory 4
modify the fall damage, it takes 23 blocks to kill anything I believe, so just make it a 22 block fall and then 1 hit kill them
if that doesn't work, check on the wiki for fall damage and stuff
No, definitely not, but snow blocks is easy to get using snow farms, but you can use cobblestone and wood or whatever you want, as long as its a solid block.
Nice design but endermen have higher health and need 48 blocks fall to die
you could also make a water trap a the bottom to make each mob fall from the same 23 block height in order to turn it into an xp farm aswell
The only problem I can think of is an excessive amount of zombies taking up all the available spawns.
how would this work with endermen??? once they touch the water they teleport
Guys just saying but these types of mob farms don't really go well on most servers with lots of people 50+
Its a bit hard to explain the reasons why but it just doesn't, so don't go wasting your time, just find a mob spawners and make 23 (24 for instakill) block fall.
the area needs to be lit up because those chunks are loaded. in your server the mobs are spawning on many different other places. I think that is the reason why you do not get many spawns.
