Honestly, it's amazing that a 5TH grade teacher is teaching students financial things, ex. rent, paychecks etc. when high school and even college don't normally teach things like this, it is amazing,

Help me understand. You’re saying that people don’t understand basic concepts like rent and pay checks until after uni? How would they live from 18 to graduating uni?

I would love to see a video explaining your flexible seating in the classroom! I also teach fifth grade and use flexible seating. I just would like to see more of your routines surrounding it and expectations 🙂

Should have your kids design & draw a currency symbol each year, then the class votes the one to use.

i love this! i think the one thing i might change would be bathrooms. i think 3 per day is super generous, but if your have ‘lady problems’ and need to go more than 3 times i would definitely let them go without fining then. :)

I'm a 5th grade teacher and LOVE the idea of a classroom economy... But I rotate between 3 different classes and have about 70 students between the 3, so I'm not sure how I'd manage this with so many students. Plus, some jobs don't need to be done all day. For example, only my homeroom would have jobs like taking breakfast count and tidying up at the end of the day. I'm stumped on how I could realistically implement this

I bought a large set of erasable pens and "sold" them individually in my store. They were by far the most popular items for my fourth graders.

My 2nd grade teacher had a very similar classroom economy. She didn't do rent or have us do checks or anything but we did get "money" for things in the class store. My teacher had bookmarks, erasers, stickers, fidget toys, boncey balls and some other stuff. I liked getting bookmarks and erasers. It was fun for everyone and we liked our jobs too.

Hi! I absolutely love your videos, especially this one! Although just a little bit of some advice. I would personally get some suckers and put those in for $1 because kids love suckers! Also, for the Gatorades, I would take them out of the plastic to make it easier to grab and hand them to the kids instead of sitting there trying to get the plastic off the Gatorade bottle. Lastly, with the candy.... I LOVE the candy idea, trust me! I would get more candies, like Kit-Kats, M&M's, and Starburst and maybe even some almond joys even and put them all into a bin and make it pretty and nice instead of just the cardboard box. But overall, I LOVE the classroom store and your classroom economy! I also tried to word it best and nicely as possible, so sorry if any of this came off as rude. Again, I know as you mentioned you buy all of this with your own money, so maybe what you have now works, but maybe what I recommended, could work after Winter break or even in the next following years! Love your videos and teaching style! :)

I went to a private Montessori school for my entire elementary experience, and as awesome as it was, I do sometimes wish I was able to experience a lot of the public school elementary things. If I was able to pick any classroom to go to for my fifth grade it would most definitely be this one. Ms wooly you are amazing, and so is your class. From the flexibility in seating to the classroom economy, I would ABSOLUTELY LOVE to be able to go here. Never stop, your students are so lucky.

Have you thought about sharing a post office box where we could send you things for your class/store? We desperately need to make sure you have some corgi things.
You were very smart to make your own classroom money... one of our teachers used monopoly money and that went WILD nearly immediately.

So I love your ideas and am going to be using some of them for my 4th graders ☺️ I am genuinely curious, though, how you carve out time from the school day to do all of this. How much time are you devoting to this every day/week? Is it on the kids to do?

  • @KotoneShiomi98

I know its a late comment but i admit, im curious. Say if a bad storm rolls through the town and knocks out some of the kids power at home, until morning or later in the night for example, would they still have to "pay for electricity" or if their family is going through a rough time?

So I was thinking when you were talking about how this can cost money and some people may be on a tight salaries. Maybe try writing a letter to a company that you may want to support you and tell them what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and how this has an impact on your students. The company may really like what you’re doing and want to support you by donating something. There may even be some local companies in your area that may want to support another local person in our community as well. So just some thought to some of those people that may not have the money to pull out of there own pocket. Just another creative way that they may be able to do this.
