@@Ragnarra well, the Borg were introduced about halfway through TNG, which I believe would place it a good bit younger than 40K. I could be wrong about that though
This is what I like about the Iron Hands. They strike the perfect balance of what a space marine is - uniquely cultured with unique solutions and most importantly, they are the heroes everyone is regrettably stuck with
They aren't "heroes" because they make no effort to save anything. Civilians, soldiers, equipment, resources, or anything else. I'd go so far as to say they aren't just not heroes, they're not even soldiers. They're augmented humans who have forgotten why they were created in the first place. They weren't created as the "superior human" to replace humans. They were created to DIE for humans. And a cultured solution to something that ISN'T the problem isn't a solution. It's just a second problem. In this case, the actual problem is that the planet they are standing on is an agricultural planet for several planets around it. Losing it means losing every other planet within dozens of lightyears. So instead of... I don't know, defending it, this Space Marine decides to repurpose the soldiers that showed themselves as effective into mechanical monstrosities because it is his view that it's a waste to defend a planet. Meaning all of the planets nearby, potentially with many trillions of people that combined would be able to produce significant output for the Imperium, are just FUCKED.
This, I like that there insane and just as monsters as there enemies. But too many people want the space marine to be generic good guy super soldiers, which I just find boring. It's one of the reasons the salamander and ultra marine come off as dull to me.
Thing is, even the Marines Malevolent would wonder what the fuck is wrong with them and I can see Ezekiel, Chief Librarian of the Dark Angels, bursting a blood vessel in their presence, and Ezekiel is one fucked up guy but he at least gives some level of care for the people, especially considering he was the one who ordered an Apothecary to help a woman give birth after her husband saved his life (his bionic eye belonged to the husband and he refuses to have it replaced with something better). The Iron Hands have an entirely unique and alien culture, revolving around being as close to machine efficient as possible, this doesn't leave room for any human error. Iron Hands are terrible to normal humans. They don't fight for you! They fight against the Imperiums enemies. They are NOT there to save you. If you can't save yourself you are weak. And a weak man is not worth saving.

Iron Hands are fucked up!
@@ethanvallance4989the guardsman and civilians are inefficient
Well an Iron Warrior, even as a traitor, wouldn't turn a perfectly good soldier into a Servitor. It's inefficient and takes too much time.
At least the Iron Warriors won't turn everyone on the world into servitors. They'll hold as long as necessary to decimate their enemies.
Even as loyalists, the Iron Warriors were more efficient than the Iron Hands, purely because of their combat doctrine (combat efficiency above all else)
If evacuating civilians boosted the militia's morale sufficiently so they'd fight better than if the civilians were brought jn as additional soldiers, they'd be evacuated because that's the most logical solution

@@XiaoYueMao In fact, AdMech could see it being used as a "reward" as heretical behaviour because it dulls the blade of the punishment they want to mete out on criminals. Fortress and armoury worlds starve as well.
When the Iron Warriors seem slightly nicer than you.
Every iron hand needs a salamander with him at all times to act as a moral filter.
This!
Space marines are best written when they are both depicted as heroes and monsters at the same time.
The kid went on to become a Sister of Battle, last I heard.
@@starhammer5247 Let's not go taking lessons on whose sensibilities are offended by genetically enhanced super soldiers with mutilated emotions, who if remained apart of any regular human society might very well become literal serial killers. The Iron Hands have an entirely unique and alien culture, revolving around being as close to machine efficient as possible, this doesn't leave room for any human error. Mmm converting them into servitors would be a waste... A machine can be out played while a man is unpredictable and an experinced Guardsmen more so.
I expect most Iron Fathers would agree with the second half of your assessment, but disagree with the first half: a man *is* unpredictable. Sometimes he'll run when you tell him to fight, or fight when you tell him to report for servitorisation.
From text it sounds like they were to made into auxiliary, not into servitors. In this case it's more akin to skitarii, cyborg soldiers, not mindless automatons.

I won't deny that he was a brutal man, that's what he was known for, but he wasn't for people replacing their limbs with metal replacements.
"...Already my Legion's warriors replace their shield hands with metal in my honour, and so they too are learning to doubt the natural strength of their bodies. They must be weaned off this practice before it becomes a mania for them. Hatred of what is natural, of what is human, is the first and greatest of the corruptions. So I record it here: when the time comes, I will strip my hands of their unnatural silver. I will instruct my Legion to recant their distrust of the flesh. I will turn them away from the gifts of the machine and bid them relearn the mysteries of flesh, bone and blood. When my father's Crusade is over, this shall be my sacred task. When the fighting is done, I shall cure my Legion and myself. For if fighting is all there is, if we may never pause to reflect on what such devotion to strength is doing to us, then our compulsion will only grow." - Ferrus Manus at the start of Wrath of Iron
@@darksider2903 He was brutal but quick and not wastefull , he didnt approve of sustaining high casualties and did not engage in drawn out slugging matches like Perturabo did , neither did he punish failure with immediate execution and decimations. Ferrus Manus would not approve. He wanted to remove the metal from his hands and teach his sons the value of natural strength and the power of human will. He didn't kill the monster of Medusa because of his iron hands, but because of his strength and will to never give up. The Iron Hands are a tragic legion. His death only reinforced their reliance on technology, as they subconsciously feared that they would never be strong enough without further augmentation.
"The fault is with my mind. I rely on the augmentation given to me by my metal gauntlets, so much so that the flesh beneath them is now little more than a distant memory...A day will come when I will strip it from me, lest I lose the power to master myself forever.
