250,000 Vietnamese, Chinese, Cambodian people passed through and or lived on this small island off the coast of Malaysia. Upwards of 40,000 - 60,000 people at one time - making this place the most populated place on earth at one time. Today, my friends and I visited. You should visit yourself before the government turns this place into a resort and the refugee experience will be lost forever! Make your way to Terengganu via Kuala Lumpur and hire a boat via your hotel. Hope for good weather! During the stormy winter months boats might not go out and you should leave early because if the tide is low your boats can't return to land. Special thanks to everyone who made this video possible. Thank you to the refugees who laid foundation for me and the other second generation Vietnamese to have an identity.

ZI was there too, I had been in Pula Bidong around 7 months , and after that I was received by Canada .when I look back , make me remember vererything in my memory, Thank you so much for your video, Thanh God for giving us a place to tracer to third country like US , Canada and around the world, God bless Malaysia for open heart and arm to Cary Vietnamese refugee.
It was brought back memories. Vietnamese refugees ever been relocated to Pulau Papan from Pulau Bidong due to overcrowded. It was at East Malaysia nearby Labuan Island. Some of Vietnamese came back to Labuan from US to say hello to Red Cross members that used to sent them foods for them to cook. It was a memorable moment.
I was here in 1982. Spend 32 days on a boat and was rescued. I remembered it like it was yesterday. My journey to America was a painful memories, but im blessed through the hands of God. Will never forget my journey. Thank you Kyle
I was there in 1978. The island was full of people, it does not look anything like what you saw now. I was about 10 years old. I would love to go back to see it again. It will be some painful
memories. I am so happy to see young folks like you that like to see old histories of Viet Nam people that struggles to have a better life. Thank you
May 1980, my friend stood on the rock outcrop below Doi Ton Giao waving me goodbye with his shirt, I was 14 and heading for Canada 🇨🇦. That was my last memory of Pulau Bidong 😭
I was there for 7 months in 1978. Still recognize the spot on the beach where we put up a tent. The front beach there were a few ship wrecks and now had been removed and the trees are growing back on the top mountain. In the beginning there were lack of food and water and life on the island was very difficult. So many people got sick and died there. Thanks Kyle for the video.
Pulau Bidong

The Vietnamese Boat People who Survived the Journey to Malaysia are a Tough, Hardy People. They have my Salute and my Respect for their Valour. Through their Ingenuity and Innovation they created a Settlement in Pulau Bidong. Their Survival Spirit against All Odds should be Recorded in The Annals of History. Pulau Bidong should be Preserved and Maintain as a Monument of The Human Spirit to Survive Under All Odds. Last but Not Least We should Remember, Honour and Pray for those Boat People who Perish at Sea or who were Abducted and Lost Forever to the Cruelty of Thai Pirates. May their Souls Rest in Peace and Eternal Justice be Done for Each and Everyone of Them. 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for making this video. I was in Pulau Bidong for 7 months in 1979 (March to October). I was nine years old at the time - and it's interesting to see what Bidong looks like today. The one view that I remember was that if you're on the beach in Bidong (Zone A) - you can see a small island a few hundred meters away.
Iwas there 1986 hen i was very very young!!!! I miss Bidong !!!! (Than you your video Kyle !!!
Thank you so much for this video. I was born there in 1981. Reading the comments, I can't help but wonder if our families have crossed paths. It is amazing to think about what our families had to go through to provide a better life for us. I wish everyone the best.
How beautiful beach in Pulau Bidong!!!! I 'd a lot of my memories and friends here.

i was there back in 1978 when i was only 3 years old . i still do remember living there . Thanks Kyle for the beautiful video ...
Thank you Kyle. I was 6 when I was there. Sad memories but very grateful to be in America. Thank you America for taking my family in.
So, I stumbled upon this video after watching a few other Pulau Bidong videos today out of the blue, just feeling super nostalgic I guess, lol. Except for Kyle, I feel like the other 3 kids were like wth, can we get outta here lol.
Anyway, I was living there for about 7 months before transferring to the other camp that no one mentioned, or at least that's what it seems like, Sungei Besi, from December 1987 to June 1988. I was 12-13 years old and I still have vivid memories of this place. My boat number was MB889. We stayed at "zone" D (I guess), right at the bottom of the hill (zone F). There was a bakery (they were just making baguettes mostly I'm sure), and an outdoor TV watching area, right at this foothill area. There was no mosquito that I recall, but major rat problem. They would frequently bite your big toes when you sleep. Garbage was a huge problem so imagine the stench. Only the pioneers from 1978-1979 had to deal with clearing out the vegetation as well as constructing housing units. We had it good in 1987, all of that were done, and so were the wells. The wells filled up with fresh water all on their own. I was in charge of pulling up buckets of water from the well since I was the man of our household, nevermind that I was a scrawny little under-nourished 13 year old boy, lol.
I've been living in California since March 1989, and only went back to Vietnam once in 1996. In my next trip back to VN, whenever that might be, I'll surely make a stop at Pulau Bidong. Fantastic job Kyle!!!
Hi Bang, I'm glad that you mentioned Sungai Besi. I was never on Pulau Bidong but I was an English teacher at Sg Besi from 1989 to 1991. It was good memories and all my students were great. I am still in touch with some of them, especially those in the U.S. and Australia.
Sungai Besi was leaps and bounds better than Pulau Bidong in terms of quality of life, minus the beach of course. Even the food was pre-cooked for you. I do remember the early English lessons, way back in the mid 80's when I was still in Vietnam, they were British English I assume. I'm now so used to American English, looking back, those lessons seem so funny.
Thank you Kyle.! I lived there when i was 17. It was in 1984. Lots of memories and emotions! Thanks again! You are a good kid!
I was there too. 1984. The boat come from "nam can". (I live there only three months). Kyle Le, Thank you Soooooo much!
Who else thinks Kyle and I should do a collab video!? I'll be your cameraman so you can fully host the show! Thumbs up for that 🔥🔥
I don't know much about it but i know that my parents lived there for a long time. My parents actually met each other on a boat on the way to Pulau bidong. I'll try to find some old photos and more information to send to you. Maybe someone will see those photos and maybe if god will, my father will find his long lost sister who lives somewhere in canada whom he hasn't spoken to in many years. I know my father is thinking of her every day. Sometimes he even cries. It's not often my father speaks of his experience there but when he does, i can always see the pain in his eyes. Thank you for doing what you do. It's special!
Thanks for the video of Palau bidong island It memories l was been there since 1983 for two months time is go fast just like a yesterday and I will never forget.
My family arrived there in 1985, boat # MB366. I was 7 years old. I still remember that place and would love to come back to visit one day. We made it to the U.S 1986. Thanks for sharing this video. It brings back some many childhood memories.
Thank you for this video. I was there in 1981 when I was 11 and carefree. Nature has reclaimed most of the places. I was an altar boy at the Catholic Church on top of the hill. I used to have dreams about Pulau Bidong, particularly when there was uncertainty in my life. Living in Pulau Bidong was a time of uncertainty for a lot of people. My family and I were there for eight months; then we were flown to the Philippines for three months and then to the U.S. "Bien Nho" is the song that forever reminds me of Pulau Bidong and my experiences there. This song was used to bid farewell to people leaving for their final destination--their future country. "Ngay mai em di bien nho ten em goi ve...." The old bridge was called the Jetti, and now it's nicely built for the people who would come back to reclaim their memories, or for those who would like to understand what happened to us in the past.
Thank you Kyle for bringing back the great memories. I was there in 1981.
You are awesome. I love you for your precious time and energy to look back into the future. Take care yourself son.
I was there back in 1984 . this island is so beautiful! I wish some day I will go back to visit...
Pulau Bidong .. yes I was there too from May -1988 to Dec 1990... now I am living in Canada 🇨🇦,thanks God ..God bless you all ❤️
I was there in 1978. We were the 1st wave of refugees. The supply bridge and the beach was my playground. This video brought back some mixed emotions of good and bad memories. The government removed the haunted boat that was rested on the shore. On top the hill on the east side of the island was a church surrounded with a cemetery. Our children should see this document to appreciate what they have now. This is why we were the most successful immigrants to which ever country that we landed.
Great video. Thanks for that. But bidong Island also gave a lesson to Malaysians.
As always Malaysians try to help others as much as we can. But not everyone really appreciate it..
Now a huge wave refugees from myanmar came in.
But Malaysians still remember what happen during the process from Bidong to 3rd country. Its makes us think many times about myanmar refugees...
May God guide & bless us..
I was a kid living and running around this island back in the early 80's. Thanks for bring back some memories. I still remember that place.
🌹🌹🌹

Thank You Kyle. I arrived here on May 19th, 1988 on MH 3107 and lived here for 4 montsh before heading out to Nordhorn Germany.

I was 6 when my mom and brother landed on this island. We spend 9 months here before we got word that we got a sponsor from the USA. There was a church, temple, hospital/clinic when we was there. Watching this video brought tears to my eyes.
I will try to organize a return trip for my viewers when the world opens up.
In 1985, VC tried to change lunar calender, celabrated new year couple weeks earlier. Then I escaped to Malaysia, celebrated new year again!!
Hi bro,
Thanks a lot for your video. I was there when I was 5 years old.
Lots of emotions.
Best regards.
I was born on this island in 79 thanks for video I don't remember anything and was good too see a video of bi dong
I was there in 1979, my boat is VT 0388 tau so 252 lived in Khu D. What a life memory! Life was very challenged during one year in Bidong then another year in Bataan-Philippine. However, life move on, treat it as Boot Camp training.
Thank you so much Kyle, you have definitely complete a part of my dream. I was there for 7 months in 1980 I am 60 now but my memories still seeing thing beyond the grown up trees. I always saved a spot in my life to visit is Pulau Bidong where my second life came from. Thank you and wishing all the best luck on you channel. God bless
Hello! My uncle was there for eleven months between December 1980-November 1981. He came from Ho Chi Minhh City and the neighbourhood Nguyen Che Nghia quan 8. If any of this sounds familiar to you, please get in touch with me. His surname was Lam.
i was there in 1982 when i was 9 years old. It's not like a jungle where people lived and stayed as paths were made to get to places. Yes it's stinking hot on the island and many people swam in the ocean to keep cool until the authority showed Jaws the movie on the outdoor cinema. There was a church on top of the hill at one end of the island and to get to the church people had to walk along a path next to the ocean and close the path in the water was a big metal ship which was sank and rusting away. Many stories about that ship, one of the stories was, before the island became a refugee camp a boat loaded with Vietnamese people tried to land on the island and the people who lived on the island were scared of the refugee boat so they sank it before it reach land and everyone onboard drowned. People who lived on the island believed they were seeing ghosts of people who were onboard the boat trying to get to the island. Being scared of seeing ghosts reaching towards land native people dragged the sank boat closer to land so the ghosts can get onto land. Since then the ghosts stopped appearing.
Yes the island was crowded alright but we all had a roof over our head, food and water were supplied to us daily. Life wasn't too bad when you're a kid as all the worrying were done by my dad. I still remember skipping church in the evening and go down to the rock pools by the beach to catch little fish trapped in rock pools. lots of memories of the island.
Thank you for sharing your memories. I was there in 1982 too but unfortunately was too young to remember.
thank you for the visual. I heard stories from my newcomer friends in school about the place. The sand beach probably made it safe to beach the boats. Good video
Kyle, thank you for sharing the video. My family was there April 1979, for about 9 months. After 3 days on the sea, getting robbed by Thai privates, escaped almost deadly storms, we reached Pulau Bidong on 4/19/1979. Watching this vid brings me tears... what a memory.
What inspires you to travel here and made this video? Any of your family were there?
Oh god, I feel so emotional watching this video, that was the island where my dad ans uncle were. My dad told me how living in the island was hard for his oldest brother and him...
Great show! remind everyone that freedom's not easy comes.
Thanks so much for brought back my memory, on the minute 2:14 I saw my "TA ON" plate with my name and some of my friend name on the Boat MC 522
for anyone who has ever lived here will definitely feel a strange feeling, sad, overwhelmed, happy mixed when coming back here just for the purpose of visiting. Like returning home. To the Vietnamese people born on Bidong Island, you are part of us too, Malaysians.
Thank you for sharing.. I was there in 1985.
i was 6 when our family left and settle in this island in '78, i remember island has 2 words, i think this is it, our group settle on end of island, at that time, it has one well and nothing else, the adults had to help build a communal cabins with no walls, just wood planks for families to sleep. Each morning we would go with my Dad to collect wood for cooking. Our part of the island had one generator, one well to get water, some log cabins, very little privacy. We stayed there for about 7 months. Fond memmories.
Thanks for this Kyle, my mom was here for 8 months in 87”
Thanks for the video. Brings back good memories. I was there in 1980 as a 6 years old boy. Many great memories. That's where I ate my first squirrel and canned meat which are flown in once a week. Awesome video! Thanks Kyle.
Pulau Tengah too in Johor,Malaysia was once a refugee camp.
I too was once lived there over a year when I'm around 7-8yrs old. There was used to be a shot down ship laying on the sand somewhere there. Looks like they got rid of it.
At 1:15, it was the beach of Zone C, where we used to swim every day in October 1980, 38 years ago to this date. It looked beautiful but the sand is brutally deceived. There were plenty of sharp rocks hidden under the sand, it hurts so much that you have to tip on your toes to walk sometimes.
At 3:22 , it was the only well located between Zone C and Zone D that provided utility water for about 4,000 nearby campers. The plastic bag that you exposed at 3:25 was 2-day ration for a refugee that contained: small pouches of rice, canned sardines, instant noodles, green bean, salt, sugar. Yes, you're right, the nature has truly showed who's the boss by reclaiming this island mercilessly in the past 20 years.
Thanks for sharing, Kyle. I wish all the best to you and to your family, especially your folks, who may happen to be my "Pulau Bidong's compatriot".
does the water is from underground source? If yes, does it still taste salty?
Right, only one well to draw water, one generator , the area become overcrowded, they had to built a public 'toilet' pier structure on the water.
I was
there as kid around 1978 - 79. My elder brother & uncle got there first, then I arrived with my parents. Later ,my grandparent. I remembered we were robbed 7 times by Thai Pirates at sea & remember the storm with 2 storeys high wave that made everyone scream & pray.
PB289 6 months 06/1981-12/1981 there was a violent storm went through few lost their lives. Remembered hungry time, but very caring group of Vietnamese, party all the time ( get together coffee and chat to send goodbye to friends settle to new countries). When people leaving the island, they played Thai Thank Nghìn Trùng Xa Cách and Khanh Ly Biển Nhớ, and the poem of Hoàn Hoặc Tử just teared my heart.
PB329, I was there 7/1981 to 4/1982, but I remember the storm that you are talking about. I live in F4, close by the school house.
Yes, I still remember those song when we leaving Pulau Bidong move to Sungai Besi :)
Thank you Kyle Le for making this video. I was here or 6 or 7 months in 1981. Then we were in Kulalumpua for 1 more month before coming to America.
Me too. SS1050 PB040 1/81-6/81. Do i know you hihi? Le Vu.
Thank you! My family and I stayed there for two years. This brought back so much memory.
Wow, my parents already lived here... I was born in kuala lumpur in 1993. I must come this island as soon as possible
+Nghia tram hieu go now before they make it into a resort.
thank you Kyle for your hard work showing us and the RUclips world about the Viet experience in PB. we should never forget our history and the sacrifices our parents and family did for our survival. if you can Kyle please visit Guam where thousands of Viet like my own family were living after the Fall of Sai Gon . peace.
The music in this video was refreshing. //// This shed some light on the refugee experience for me. My family came to America via a different route. I've often wondered what it was like for others who had to undertake a more difficult path.
Born here in 1985, my parents migrated to Australia with nothing but their bare hands. After years of hard work we are well off. Thanks to our parents we, the children live all around the world. In Canada, the states, Australia, France and many other places around the world with better lives. We love our parents and know the stuggles of what they have done for us.
Am from Kedah,Malaysia. My cousin was the Director of the Refugee Camps for sometimes.
Sobering. Thanks for sharing History.
In memory of those who did not make it....May peace be with you.
Great job Kyle. I was there back in 1980 and your video brought so much memories back. Thank you!
Hello! My uncle was there for eleven months between December 1980-November 1981. He came from Ho Chi Minhh City and the neighbourhood Nguyen Che Nghia quan 8. If any of this sounds familiar to you, please get in touch with me. His surname was Lam.
I was here 1982 thx for the video
I was there back in 1978 ! My boat number is VT-832 .
You were one of the early bird, congrad! I was there in 1980
I was there between 1984 to 1988 my boat number is MB 115. I used to be a photographer at Bidong between1986-1987, I had a lot of photos with friends, when I came to Quebec City, Canada in 1988; I lost my luggage which contained hundreds of pictures I had with friends. Unfortunately this meant that I had no connection to the friends I had made. If anyone had somehow ended up with my luggage, please reply to this comment. If anyone reads this, and happens to remember who I am, please reply because I would like to stay in touch with you.
Pulau Bidong , trenganu , malaysia .....is it a historical tourist spot
I was there 1978, I was 14 years old then, all the memories still there, we torned that bidong up really bad, what I tree's almost all chopped down, only quarter left, where you coming in from the tourist looking on your left side was nothing left, only tree's chunk, I remembered that island, given us a lot of fish to eat. Government hand out one bag varieties dry food for 3 days only, sometimes fresh vegetables and fresh meat almost never. Please let me know how to tour there, sincerely I'm saylo cun, thank you!
60 000 peoples in this island in 1980
I was there Mar/1979 , my boat number was 369 ( KG-0025)
Hi every body. My boat mb532. April 21 1986. My boat arrived in Malaisia April 18. 1986. Thank you to make this vblog. First I lived in longhouse 4 in D area
oh wow your are the closet boat number to mine 1986 MB 527 per my dad we got ther 4/4/1986. And we stay at sector F dont remember F what.
I remember that island between the Malaysian war ships that use to circle it at night, to the dead that were carried ashore to be buried. That place was hell.
I was born here in 87. Would like to check it out someday.
There was a lot of coconut trees when I was there back in 1982, specially from Jeti bridge look into the island. Did the jungle took over all coconut trees? I don't see any in your footage.
I was there starting on April, 1980. I was 10 then. We were there for 7 months. Looks like they removed the Church, the housings, the big boat that lay on the shore, and etc. There was like a big town with lots of people then. The jungle has taken over.
I have a question. Where did you go after that? I would love to know more and also where do you live now? Thank you!
Kyle thanks for the video. It brings back memories of the time I was at Bidong in 1981 for 3 months. Yes I am that old! It looks more like a jungle now. The original jetty was probably replaced by the new structure that you were on. That drone shot of the beach was probably at Sector or zone A where there were a few café shops along that stretch of beach.
mot thoi dde nho*'. really sad to see this very memorial place is becoming desolated. me and my family were among the guests / refugees there. thank you, Kyle, for doing this video. very emotional watching it!
I was there 35 yrs ago.I stayed there for 6mos . I had decent time and endure bad foods, humid and swimming. I finally closed that chapter of my life and move on. I still think live is good even the most difficult time as a refugee. Thanks GOD!!
I use to live here when I was young, bring back my memories. My boat # MB153
I was here as a 16 yr old in 1977...student camping but cannot remember anyone there.it was used by royal aus airforce as a practice site for bombing!
I was there in 1979. It was a jungle, but not like what you see. The bridge is too luxurious. It was open, no roof over it. There were so many boats rusting and rotting on the beach. In the evening, it was paradise on Earth with a sunset. In the daytime, it was disgusting with human feces all over the beach.
The back side of the island was beautiful. The clear water was incredible.
My boat number was AG0132. I will never get this place.
Thank you very much Kyle!

Thanks for the tour of Pulau Bidong Kyle. I was actually born there and heard about my parents struggle just to get there.
