Although the ancestors were separated from the continent hundred of years ago many of us from the Caribbean identify with your way of life because it was passed down to us. Those who are from the country areas in Jamaica remember growing up and our mothers swept outdoors the way you just did. We also used coconut brush to shine the floor after applying the red polish. Cooking outdoors was the same. Don't let rain fall on the wood. You either have to start blowing on it or fan it. Lol
