  • Here is how to assemble a 1994 Toyota 4Runner Tailgate. It took me a bit to figure out the first time I did it, so I thought I'd do a video on it to show everyone else! Just reverse the steps for removing the window and regulator!

    @Konabish are your rear fender wells rusted t all? first thing i would check, if its clicking but not moving, it the ground. its located behind the drivers side panel right under the rear window at the back. if that is good, then i would look at the window motor and stuff. you can manually jump the window. just take the access panels off the gate, and unplug the motor, then hook a battery directly to the wires for the motor. positive to one, and negative to the other. if it doesnt move, reverse

  • @analog56x
    @analog56x  12 лет назад

    @gwendolyneyes 2) if you pull the cables manually, you bypass the locking mechanism completely. so pull the cables, and the door will open. the only reason i mentioned lowering the window a bit is because with the window all the way up, it will get caught at the top and sides and you wont be able to get the door open. let me know if you need more help :)

    @gwendolyneyes lube the window mechanism, you mean? the best way is to remove it, brake clean the frig out of it, then smear grease on it. thats what i did to my buddy's. his barely moved, now its awesome again. youcould try spraying it with wd40 or some other spray lube if you dont want to remove it.

    No I am still trying to clean the lock and latch. The window is working just fine. I've been told pb blaster, carb cleaner , liquid wrench, white lithium. It's not rust. desert silt and dust and dirt. sound right?

  • @gwendolyneyes
    @gwendolyneyes 12 лет назад

    This is GOLDEN thanks for that- will be giving it another go- let you know what happens- advise on best way to clean and lub up- without taking the part out??

  • @gwendolyneyes

    My Tailgate is stuck and I cant get it open! I've opened the assembly and it all looks like it should work. Just south of the lock assembly there is this spring that keeps knocking the lock shut. What is it? I cant figure out its purpose. Is it possible to use pliers to pull the cable that pulls the tailgate latches back manually while it is locked? Any Suggestions? It is dusty and dirty and probably needs a full bottle of lube. Thanks!

  • @gwendolyneyes
    @gwendolyneyes 12 лет назад

    I guess my big question is Can I pull the cables without unlocking, and do the windows need to be in a certain position?Can you tell me what that spring does? Is the contact by the lock for the auto function? Are you saying pull the cables from the top where the window comes up? I really need an elementary answer- I am NOT a mechanic, just someone trying to save some dough.....so ...one more time, in detail? thanks tons...
    PS- might my window break if I kick too hard?

    long shot here. good video.....back door dummy light wont turn off. what part shoul i examine in the tailgate for this??

    • @Trainrek1
      @Trainrek1 8 лет назад

      Could be the mercury switch at bottom left wen tailgate is open. Connections cud be bad. Switch on the light housing cud be sticky. Maybe. The wire that goes under the carpet at left rear might be pinched and completing a circuit. Just a few things at the rear, doubt its anything else but u never know. I have one of these 4runners.

  • @BeachBow

    I have a 90 4Runner and I need to get the switch behind the key replaced. I can't seem to find a way to get the window "up" and out of the way when the tailgate is down. Any ideas? Bound to be an interlock somewhere, I just can't see it.

    Are there any tricks for removing the glass? I have a tailgate from a junk yard so no power to the window. Can I still get the glass out or will I need power?

    • @analog56x
      @analog56x  5 лет назад +1

      Is the window up or down? If its up, you should be able to unbolt the motor assembly and move the whole thing down to gain access to the window clamps. If the window is down, you need power to get it up. OR because its at a j/y, you could just take some good tin snips or an angle grinder to cut the bottom of the door to get to the window clamps.

    • @lorentracy006

      analog56x The window is down. Yeah I figured I’d have to get power to it.

    Hey... don't know if you're still checking comments 3 years down the road from this post, but I have a 94' runner and had someone else "fix" the back glass that got busted in an accident. He put it back together, but not correctly. Lock when pulled up does not stay in place like it should, it just falls back down. Can you take a up-close video of the linkages working properly? my guess is the guy that worked on it lost a part in dis-assembly but need to see one in working order to verify...
    thanks in advance for any help you can give..

    • @analog56x
      @analog56x  10 лет назад

      i do check comments still. just cant respond to them unless im on my computer, cause the new 'improvements' to youtube have made it so that my phone tries to respond through G+, but then i cant actually reply... if the window is falling down, id check that the gears and stuff on the arms arent damaged... if the arms are bent or not sitting quite right in the mechanism, they can fall down. do you have to 'roll the window back down' before you can roll it up again, or once it falls, you can just roll it back up again? if its not too cold (mainly because the gaskets around doors freeze shut) i could maybe make another video explaining the mechanism and showing how it works... ive got another project 4runner with the back gate half ripped apart right now haha!

    • @glennsheffield3603
      @glennsheffield3603 10 лет назад

      the window isn't falling down. it's the lock that falls down. so I'm guessing somewhere in the mechanics of door handle, electrical connection, and lock-mech right in the middle of that assembly there might be some kind of spring that would hold the lock in an unlocked position. I'm guessing this is missing due to the tech who installed this replacement glass for me. As it sits, I have to pull up the lock-handle and hold it with my hand to keep it from falling. That's one issue.
      The second issue is that while I can get the window to roll down every time using either the key/switch on the back of the tailgate OR the console switch to operate the same back glass, I can't get it to roll back up without trying 20 to 50 times. I'm guessing this is an electrical contact issue and I'm hoping it's not the motor or a switch but a failure in re-assembly by the guy that did the work of replacing the glass.

    • @analog56x
      @analog56x  10 лет назад

      Oh! The lock falls down... when the window is in the full up position, it should automatically lock. But having to hold the lock up sounds like an issue. Ill try to make some time to dig into my 4runner to help. With the window going down fine, but trying 50 times before it goes up sounds like a module issue... bad relay or something... on the drivers side of the vehicle, behind the panel, theres a black module unit. It will be above that little cubby hole thing in the back. Listen carefully for a click sound when you try to roll the window up. Its really a bad place to put the module, considering the bottoms of the quarter panels rot out and expose the modules to crap. One other thing you might try first is push on the tailgate while you try to roll it up. If the gate isnt closing properly, or all the way, the window wont go up. Same thing if the rear wiper arm isnt in the resting position.
      Ill try to get a video up by the weekend of the mechanism for the lock for ya. Cheers bud

    • @analog56x
      @analog56x  10 лет назад

      Actually... now that I think about it... if the rear window is in any position other that full down, it shouldnt unlock. Just so that you cant open the back gate when the window is only half way down haha. As soon as the window starts going up, the tailgate locks itself, providing the gate is closed all the way

    • @glennsheffield3603
      @glennsheffield3603 10 лет назад

      what's the best way to get you a video clip to show, rather than try to explain long-hand. we're almost on the same page but i think a video is shortest route to showing you problem before you tear into a vehicle for me.

  • @stevejette2329
    @stevejette2329 6 лет назад

    what if the window goes up and down VERY slowly ? Worn out motor ? Stiff hardware ? Battery is good. Thanks

    • @analog56x
      @analog56x  6 лет назад

      i'd be willing to bet you either have a bad motor (weak) or you have a substantial voltage drop to the motor. could be as simple as a bad ground only letting half the voltage through. the first thing i would do is grab a multimeter or a voltmeter and check how many volts you are getting to the motor when you actuate it up and down. if its less than about 10 volts (with the vehicle off), i would look at wiring, which may involve removing your driver's rear quarter interior panel. if you have 10-12 volts (with the vehicle off) i would change the motor. i dont suspect you would lose more than 2 volts inside all the wiring and switches... toyota is pretty smart with their wiring... let me know what you find, and if you need any additional help! cheers bud!

    @analog56x  12 лет назад

    @gwendolyneyes that spring is for the window... i assume since you cant get it open, and since you have the panel off that the window is up... what i had to do to get my rusted one open and off was roll down the window about an inch. just enough to clear the window seal around the top and sides, then pull each cable manually. the gate should then open. i had to kick the crap out of it from inside to get mine open though. let me know if it works for you

  • @analog56x
    @analog56x  12 лет назад

    @gwendolyneyes oh ok. id try blowing it out with an air gun or something first, unless its wet already... dust is easier to get out than mud... but yea, carb cleaner or brake clean, then pb blaster, wiggle everything alot, keep soaking it, and working at it till its totally free moving. did you get the door open?

    @analog56x Do you ever test anything first with a breadboard or something? I had some stuff for my train layout that wasn't working right so I bought one last year to make sure that it would work haven't used it much, though.

    Got the door open, its clean, and everything seems to work, but the handle doesn't open the latch correctly. I can't figure out why. The handle pulls out on one side, and I assist by doing it's job for it on the mechanism. It doesn't look broken, just maybe installed incorrectly. Maybe just not attached to the handle properly. Still workin, thanks for your help and encouragement! But that bit about the having to be entirely ope get the lock up was key. Seems obvious now...

    My '94 4Runner SR5 tailgate window lifter has stopped working, from the tailgate keyed switch, and also by the switch on the center console. I can hear a faint click, then nothing. From your reassembly at the end I kinda get the idea how to remove the 'carpeted cover', then the plastic and 'foam piece'; is there anything I can do to test if the lift motor is bad, etc.? Thanks!

    @HedgehogOutdoors which plugs?

  • @analog56x
    @analog56x  12 лет назад

    @gwendolyneyes that spring locks the door when the window is up. the window has to be completely down for the spring to allow you to unlock the door. ok, so through the opening where you took the access panel off, you should be able to see 2 cables attached to a lever system.

    @4KawasakiRider4 i am glad i could help! when i first tore it apart, i had some issues, so i figured id make a video to help out anyone who needed to do some internal work on their tailgate and had never taken one apart before. having the window open is super nice! i love the 4runner for that! all the windows wide open cruisin around, or even hitting up the big mud pits haha! if you havent got mud on the inside of your truck, you're not wheelin right :P

  • @OldMotorcycleAdventures
    @OldMotorcycleAdventures 13 лет назад

    Pretty simple, where do those plugs connect to?

  • @analog56x
    @analog56x  13 лет назад

    @HedgehogOutdoors the light wires run in with the harness that goes into the driver side of the back of the 4runner. my plug was corroded, so i had to just solder all the wires together haha
