You can also just use tile nippers to break the plate where you want it to break. they're actually pretty friendly. No plastic bag hammer abuse. It chips the plate...the hammer. Just nip it. :)
I also make jewelry... try using a set of diamond hole saws and cut out round pieces of ceramic plates then tumble. I have done this with plates, tiles, sea shells and glass...
I'm getting ready to tumble some pottery and I found this video to be very helpful. Thank you so much! I really like how the pottery edges are smooth and the picture remained. I didn't think about adding the "normal" sea materials (sand, shells, etc.) Thanks again!
The sand and shells are very close in hardness to the glass so it will do little to tumble the glass. The plate ceramic wont hardly be affected. Leave out the sand and shells. Use only the rocks, especially the smaller pcs. Love to see that vid. if you try that.

Cool suggestion! I will definitely try that.

Thank you for the comment, much appreciated. That is a great suggestion and I will very likely give that a try.

Was curious about the size of your tumbler.
I use a 2lb barrel/tumbler.
