hello, I plan on going to main street bridge today to do some Railfaning. how do you Identify locomotives?

Cheers for Southern Pacific in having its Coast Line for freight traffic kept open should the need arise before the coming of Union Pacific.
So when did the first train finally get the green? Must have been a long day just parked.
I readed the article "The Tanker" on Trains Magazine around 1998 and these tanks remember me those pictures.
