  • Engineer John A. Matteo discusses how innovative preservation approaches have been implemented to overcome the unique challenges of preserving Fallingwater, a local and international landmark that’s now on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
John has played an integral role in the ongoing preservation of Fallingwater for more than 20 years. As part of Robert Silman's team, he helped to prevent the possible collapse of the house's cantilevers through the installation of an elegant post-tensioning solution in the early 2000s. Since that time, John has consulted on a range of preservation projects that require his structural engineering expertise. John is the principal of 1200 Architectural Engineers, PLLC located in Alexandria, VA.
    ABOUT FALLINGWATER:
Fallingwater is hailed internationally as a masterpiece of 20th century architecture and is Frank Lloyd Wright’s most recognized example of the harmonious union of art, architecture and nature. Entrusted to the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy in 1963, this dramatically cantilevered house over a waterfall was designed in 1935 for its natural setting and inscribed to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2019.

Thank you so much for this presentation. I have been impressed by Falling Water since Architectural school in the early 80's. I am now nearing retirement as a Civil engineer, and still find Wright's work to be world class in beauty, and his willingness to push the envelope of design and materials use. I am pleased to see this masterpiece has been preserved for future generations. You must find your accomplishments in this job, and the countless hours involved extremely rewarding. Thank you for your dedication.

      Yes, absolutely fascinating.
One question that I would have loved to ask concerns the cantilevered trellis near the pool, at the far end of the guest quarters. I was standing there, admiring the cantilever, when Wes Peters walked up ... saying that the trellis cantilever was one of the most difficult structural problems that he was faced with solving... but that he finally figured it out. Unfortunately, he never offered to explain how he solved the problem.

Fallingwater is the gateway to the new world Architecture. Architecture was never the same after FLW built the Fallingwater.

You might come back with spring steel I-beam,... running along your floor joists. Set up a center,...up on the big foundation footing, ... making a lifting of the outside end,...thereby removing weight through the spring/fulcrum set up at the end, and having applied the weight in toward the foundation.
    It's balancing like a teetor-totor, isn't it???

Very cool. I understand post-tensioning now. My only concern is that I was surprised the old concrete cantilever beams didn't crack when they pulled the cables? Especially given the fact that concrete gets brittle over time. Anyway, it all worked out!

A money pit that stood longer than some of the current homes built on flat sites... FLLW homes and buildings have their flaws, but typically based on the technology and materials of that time and stand on true innovation and something that folks still to this day try to emulate.
