I know the video is about the outlet, but let's take a minute to recognize the craftsmanship on that tabletop! I had to go back and pause the video and admire the joints. :33
My last house, a 2017 build, had something similar in the kitchen island. Smaller in diameter say about 2 inches or so and it was a pop-up model. When not in use it sat flush with the granite top. When needed it would easily pop up and reveal several outlets and USB ports! Cool stuff.
Leah. I love your videos. Going to use this in my future projects I just want to thank you for your plumbing videos from years ago. I stumbled upon it last year and I was able to replace two of my faucets in my bathroom. You gave me the confidence to complete the task with your detailed description and visuals. Saved me a lot of money!
To address your concern about spilling liquids, you can also get a plastic trim that fits nicely in the hole to run the cords through and just plug everything into the wall outlet.
Nice idea, we remodeled a bathroom several years ago, including two outlets inside of one of the cabinets, for electric toothbrushes and a shaver. Very glad we did it. I like your new worktop and outlet/charger
Just FYI, that would probably be a violation of the US National Electric Code. Article 406.4 (E): "Receptacles in Countertops and Similar Work Surfaces in Dwelling Units. Receptacles shall not be installed in a face-up position in countertops or similar work surfaces."
I have to say the space you made is beautiful. That outlet ought to be a GFI. Just because accents happen in water spills. Safety is more important than convenience or good looks.
awesome! after reading the comments, the only tweak i will add is switching up the standard outlet to a gfci. love the USB/usb-c ports on this, too! i CAN do this, is my mantra too because Leah shows me how and explains it all so easily 😁💗
Why not just use a cable grommet hole? that way there is no problem with spills or even dust gathering IN the power outlets... ? They still look neat and tidy... And cost a couple of dollars... They come in black or white or even "chrome" finish.. maybe even "gold".
Leah, thank you for your instructional videos! You have such a positive way of communicating that feels authentic. You provide such valuable content and with such an encouraging vibe-you have a gift & I’m so grateful you share it with your whole heart!
That looks fantastic. I never even think to look for things like this. I like that little work area too it is out of the way but still useful. Thank you for sharing that.
These grommet outlets are amazing. We built a shelf behind our sectional couch with one of these at each end. Several family members did the same thing after seeing ours!
CAREFUL with the USB ports, make sure it has all the proper markings. Especially USB C. A lot of these are pretty dirty in power. I think Anker makes one of these and they have a proven track record. Look for PD and QC labels.
I really wish i had found these videos sooner. I used to love doing home improvement stuff and building. The last 6yr, i really gone down hill, am barely hanging onto my independence, with my spouses help. Struggling to do more tho. Im just starting keto diet tho, im hoping to have great improvement since the meds that were supposed to prevent worsening seemed to speed up joint damage and brain inflammation. Fingers crossed ill be watching more vids from here for years to come and hopefully next year, I'll be able to change a light bulb safely, or paint my house.
Great video and idea. One thing though, that may get loose over time, there are screw holes on the retaining ring underneath to keep that from happening. Thank you so much for sharing your ideas, solutions and awesome videos.
Great solution. I love and use these outlets. Only suggestion is if you have plugs that are direectional ensure you account for that when installing. Thank you for sharing. Everyone stay safe happy and healthy
Normal installs like this would require the outlet to be GFI protected but because it's plugged into a GFI, you're good to go! Very clever usage and could also be for a couch/console table as well!!
That looks great! I've been trying to come up with a solution for my large kitchen island/table. There is an outlet on the side at one end, but not the other. I think I can use this to provide a convenient outlet near the other end for appliances and laptops!
Potential code issue.(not just some regulatory BS, a real issue). Having an outlet flush in a kitchen island top invites liquid spills to fill the outlet. There are (more expensive) options for UL listed pop ups that won't fill when you spill
I like that. I'm a little worried about dirt and crud falling into those connectors. I would say after a year the USB ports would be so full of bread crumbs you probably wouldn't be able to plug anything in anymore. Can you put a child safety plug cover in the outlets and... something similar for USB when they're not in use?
Wouldn't there be a problem with debris getting into the outlet? Especially the phone charger ports? I would have put it in the wall to avoid that problem. Just extend the other wall outlet up to above the workbench. Beautiful work surface but I'd be afraid to damage it!
Leah, I could really use this in my garage workshop on my workbench for small power tools. But I live in Houston. It’s extremely humid all the time. I am wondering how moisture-resistant these are. What a great idea!
Ah. I see it’s for indoor use only. It also doesn’t specify the amps it can draw (unless I missed it). Effectively, my garage should be considered outside since it’s not climate controlled. I bet someone makes these for heavier use. I will look for some.
These are handy, tho I really like the pop-up versions because you don't tend to get as much dust and dirt in the holes. And now they sell pop-ups with wireless chargers in the top.
A suggestion, drill a second hole for a 2-3inch schedule 20 plastic pipe and flange through to drop excess wire in. Maintain convenience and make the wire still available, clutter disappears.
Why don’t electricians install outlets on countertop? Because if there is a spill it would run into the outlet causing a short . This is a very dangerous was of installing this item. Leah please look into this and report back Thank You
Although I'm familiar with the hole in office desks this thing is designed for and the fact that it was so people could run video, power, and peripheral cables to a chunky PC under the desk, I wish I had something like this because by the time I got a desk job like this I was using mainly laptops. If this includes decent surge protection and USB-PD up to like 60 watts, even better.
Very nice. I probably would have tried to drill a hole to snug the outlet close to the wall and then later realized that the retainer ring wouldn't screw on.
I wouldn't recommend it for use in a kitchen counter because of the danger of spills causing a short. We have a 3 outlet powerbar which faces parallel to the worksurface and can be raised and lowered into and out of the counter, similar to the Max Hauri Office Line POP-UP Socket Tower.
@@seejanedrill still i would be worrier of random bits and even dust falling inside, it needs some sort of cover when not in use or even those kid proof blanking plates ;)
Dear Leah, Hello Again! I really like the idea but the thought of accidentally knocking over a cup of tea or a glass of soda or water worries me despite the possibility of using the GFI outlet underneath. I would probably round over the corners of a piece of 1x4 or 1x6 with a cove bit in a router to elevate it just a little higher than the rest of the table. Maybe even do something a little fancy-dancy like cut a hole into a circular piece of wood and round-over the corner with a cove bit! It looks like there is enough thread under the table to do this. Having said that, as usual, I loved the video! Best Wishes Always and Take Care, Ol' Tom

Right! It’s gorgeous!
I dont know for sure - but that is most likely a store bought butcher block table top and those joints are all machine made and assembled.

I made a behind the couch table with two of these. Its wonderful! Since the couch covers the outlets, it works perfect
I had one, just remember to put childproof plastic plugs when not in use to avoid electric fire etc events from liquid spills.
Leah. I love your videos. Going to use this in my future projects I just want to thank you for your plumbing videos from years ago. I’m so happy you’re still making videos, you’re a wonderful and thorough teacher ❤
I am clumsy, I would worry about spilled water or coffee.
If the finish is done right, it won't matter.
I would think you could find some type of cover, maybe silicone to cover the outlet?
@@chifan7 This would work.
You’re safe because of the GFCI. provided you test monthly as per manufacturer directions

Convenient? Yes
Safe?🤔🤔🤔
I have to say the space you made is beautiful. That outlet ought to be a GFI. Just because accents happen in water spills. Safety is more important than convenience or good looks.
You can plug it into a GFCI, like she did, or plug it into a circuit that is GFCI-protected at the breaker box.
That wasn't very clear to see. It would have been good to point out. So nobody gets hurt accidentally.
awesome! after reading the comments, the only tweak i will add is switching up the standard outlet to a gfci. love the USB/usb-c ports on this, too! i CAN do this, is my mantra too because Leah shows me how and explains it all so easily 😁💗
They make GFCI adapters to plug in between the outlet and power strip. That way you aren't rewiring a power strip.
Why not just use a cable grommet hole?
that way there is no problem with spills or even dust gathering IN the power outlets... ? They still look neat and tidy... And cost a couple of dollars... They come in black or white or even "chrome" finish.. maybe even "gold".

Check out the one that can be pushed in and pulled out - it seems to be safer esp. around kids - it has no exposed vertical holes
