Dude... Your video gave me the confidence I needed to fix the antenna on my wife's 4 Runner. But I have to take issue with you because of something you left out. I took the antenna motor apart to get the old cable out of it. While I had it apart I cleaned it and gave it some new grease. Then, when I started putting it back together is where I ran into trouble and cussed you a bit for what your video left out.
First thing I noticed; The bolt through the center of the gear would not tighten down! BECAUSE the nut that was supposed to be on the back was not there! Your video never showed you addressing this loose nut on the back of the motor. Not knowing it was there, I screwed the bolt out and unbeknownst to me the nut fell out. It was only by shear luck that I found that little bitty nut in the sand by the tire.
Second problem; Another loose nut. Top ground screw threads through a nut inside the plastic housing. When loose this nut can move around and become misaligned. A little heads up on this would have been appreciated.
You should go back to your video and the part where you zip through the disassembly and assembly of the antenna motor, slow it down and address these two very important nuts.

My aerial broke off at a car wash 19 years ago. I always figured it would be too much of an ordeal to replace it - for kicks I thought I’d watch a video on it… yours… and it encouraged me to give it a go. When I got the motor assembly apart there was absolutely no trace of the nylon gear at the bottom of the aerial shaft. Nothing… it had completely disintegrated and disappeared.
Replaced it with a new OEM and it works great. Thanks for the vid!

2 years later this antenna video is still very useful! My antenna was stuck in the up position, and of course the white antenna puller had broken off in the motor...it could never just be easy. This video helped greatly in getting the motor assembly off and pulling out the broken nylon. Thanks!

I almost never listen to terrestrial radio anymore, but whenever my head unit is turned on it raises the power antenna.
I'm going to repurpose an extra liftgate window switch to raise and lower the power antenna only when I want it. This was a standard feature in most late-model Land Cruisers, but Toyota never carried it over to the Hilux/4Runner platform. .

Hello Friend! I'm just getting around to fixing mine. We just traded my junk 2013 Silverado and got my wife a 2019 4 runner (so at peace with this decision!). Now, I'm driving her 2002 4runner Limited. ANNNDDD Now, I'm addressing all of the issues she's wanted me to fix for years (sometimes a man just needs time, you know...), plus some more capable mods...practical things...you know...pretty much all of your earlier videos
I'd appreciate your thoughts on this inquiry...I've replaced this crap antenna once, but didn't know to get the old pieces out of the motor at the time. So, for about 10 years it has sounded like hell when you start it or when you cut it off, because the gear would grind on the end lengths of the "gear whip" for about 2 minutes, hahahah...I was thinking that I would like to do away with the motorized antenna and just use a fixed one. However, I don't want to go through the trouble of routing a new antenna wire. Do you think that you could screw one on to the threads at the top of the motor? Even disconnect the motor driving if you wish...Seems to me the conductivity should be better than the gear whip...I'm thinking of trying, even if I have to use gas/water fittings to step down to the size. What do you think?

    • @PhoRunner

hmmm not sure lol. Try it and let us know! Or just take the motor out and clean it then replace the mast! I'm sure it'll still work!

I'm not a fan of the power antenna. Other than going up and down? It looks cool but useless. Also, it goes Way up...Looks silly. JMO but I have to replace mine...Going w a whip.

@@PhoRunner I ordered a replacement. I went full Japan from Japan. I have the replacement mass too from Rock Auto...I'm sure I took the power Antenna motor out and trashed it. It worked though. Buying parts and guessing gets tiresome. This will no doubt fit right but the mast? I want a whip in there.

You'd think after 30+ years (My 1988 Land Cruiser has this same style power antenna with plastic support up the mast, that has been replaced multiple times and finally a few years ago by a Firestick mount) there would be a longer lasting, more reliable type of power antenna. I absolutely detest this design, and the fact that they're never easy to get to in any vehicle is enraging. If something is notoriously unreliable and short lived, it should at least be integrated in a way that would allow easy replacement.

good video, I am very frustrated, as after researching this problem, i thought it would be an easy fix. I could hear the motor going up and down, but the antennae did not move. So it seemed so easy. So far things have been going fairly well with my (third) 4Runner, a 1998 Limited that i just bought and had shipped from Cali to New Hampshire. (such a great decision! The underside and the frame, every bit of it is just immaculate! Like, it had dust! Just amazing!)
Unfortunately, this job ended up being a B*itch! The top nut was frozen, that took forever, got it off, but underneath it was a mess for some reason. Never would the old antennae come out! It would go up and down, but never come out! Pull, twist, pull harder, nothing. Just would not come out. After watching your vid, i went underneath and took a look, thought i could pull it and take out the antennae, replace and move fwd. NO such luck! I even took the motor apart, could not remove the antennae for love or money, even with 2 pairs of vise-grips. Its like it was hit by lightening and just froze inside. It would twist and spin, but not come out!
Now I have the crappiest job: buy a whole power assembly, remove the radio, snake the wire out and install the whole thing all over again! Stupid, as the antennae was THERE, and it was UP, and it worked! It just did not zing up and down and I'm OCD about have everything work perfectly!
Oh well. if only it dropped in like all the others.

    • @PhoRunner
      @PhoRunner  3 года назад

Try a salvage yard and get an assembly there. It might work great.
Cali trucks are definitely easier to work on. Sorry for the pain!
