Favorite Sega developed game for each 6th gen console:
*Gamecube -Beach Spikers.* - Very addictive multiplayer AM2 arcade port superior to the arcade version with tons of extra content.
*PS2 - King of Route 66* - Overlooked sequel to 18 Wheeler both developed by AM2 and again the PS2 version has much more content than the arcade.
*Xbox - Jet Set Radio Future* Not much to be said if you like style and music and Tony Hawk games and especially if you liked Jet Grind Radio. Classic!

I can't explain why, but to me, Sega's PS2 output feels like Saturn era Sega, their Xbox output feels like Dreamcast era Sega, and their Gamecube output feels like Mega Drive/Genesis era Sega.
Feels like we really got the best out of every part of Sega during the 6th gen. Sad that version company now no longer exists.

What you said about Shinobi really sums up my feelings for a lot of SEGAs titles for this generation. Looks great, but man I wish this was on Dreamcast. It's just that you can tell there is some Dreamcast DNA left in these games and it shows in gameplay and graphics. I wish SEGA would've ported some of these to the Dreamcast while acting as a third-party for other consoles. And then move over to being 100% third party when the 7th generation kicked off. I understand that SEGA was not in the financial position to do that, but it's still a shame because I truly feel the Dreamcast had so much untapped potential left after it's very short life span.

Great video as always. One small thing though, though Yakuza/Like a Dragon was not popular in the west during this era, I'd say since Yakuza 0, that it's become fairly popular.

Sega of America did not know how to market the series.
In fact SOA was really stubborn that japanese-centric franchises would always fail in America. The same mindset existed since Kakinski days, you can see that in the book Console Wars.
Atlus franchises going to Sega changed that.

I can remember reading about this Yakuza game on /v/ here and there, so I managed to pick up a copy of it on PS2 for just $5 in this bin they always had in the back for games they didn't have space for (this was well after the 360/PS3 were out so they didn't have shelf space for last Gen anymore). Was absolutely hooked from that point forward.
Same store I found God Hand at too. Absolutely loved both games.

I have to say that gen 6 was my absolute favourite period in gaming.
While Sega bowed out of the hardware market Sony, MS and Nintendo were pretty much at the height of their respective powers for my money; and as a young adult with very few responsibilities and relatively high amounts of disposable cash - it was a great time having those three consoles.
One of my favourite gaming memories was the one (and only one!) time my friends and I moved a couple of huge CRT tvs to one of our house shares to play Halo 2 linked up.

I gotta say it. 28:53 In Low income Urban Areas of America.
Jet Set Radio Future was one Amazing Graffiti Game. At the core it was all about thr Tags and Pieces.
Me and like 6 other friends used ro gather up at my house practicing our hand styles with Pen & Paper and taking turns playinf Jetset, and replicating our stuff in the game.
It was an amazing Alternative to the usual Perception of Graffiti at least in Los Angeles where it was seen and made to feel like baby Gang Bangers for us non Caucasians.
The reality is na! We dont want to Gang Bang we just like Getting Up!
This was a great reinforcement of how some of us just wanna have fun and be Funky while we are living our lives.
It wasn't so serious to say Marc Echo's Getting Up.
Which itself was a Fantastic slice of Graffiti History with actual Pioneers of thr Craft.
But at the time it took itself too seriously and Jet Set was a Fun ass Alternative to that.

Look at the quality of those games on GC,PS2 and Xbox. From rpgs, fighting games, rail shooters, racing games, new franchises... Sega was the same Sega from previous generations.
Leaving the console market did not kill Sega, the fusion of Sammy did it.
Just in a few years they would abandon everything that was not Sonic and Yakuza.

    • @nr2676
      @nr2676 6 месяцев назад +1

Fortunately Utsumi did some revivals from those abandoned Sega franchises in 2017-2023. Most of them were outsourced (Valkyria Chronicles, Shining, Streets of Rage etc.), but someone of them were developed by Team Sonic (Phantasy Star 2 Online, Sakura Wars, Samba De Amigo) or RGG Studio (Virtua Fighter, Super Monkey Ball, probably Jet Set Radio). Yeah those revivals were definitely low budget, and ended not that good like original games, but - they are trying. Let's hope in Power Surge initiative we well get more ,,good'' revivals from classic Sega IP's.

3rd party Sega in 6th gen is my second favorite era of theirs when it comes to games (Saturn being first). So many great games on each platform. The birth of Yakuza, god tier sequels to past games like Outrun 2 and JSRF, other new IPs like Billy Hatcher and Gunvalkyrie. Despite going third party their creativity soared in that period (only to fall into a rut once 7th gen started). I’m hoping their new “super game” initiative will lead to a similar renaissance

It's hard for us who grew up really just Sega and Nintendo, but at this point Xbox has had a longer console life than Sega had (23 yrs vs 15 yrs, North America consoles). At this point anyone who worked at Sega on their consoles have long since moved on or retired. What we do miss is their unique games like seaman, cho cho rocket, space channel 5, etc etc, as well as the awesome arcade ports like crazy taxi and house of the dead, among many others.
If Sega could recapture some of that unique magic they'd bring back what has been missing in gaming since 2001, without the need for a full on console.

My main issue with more modern (especially 3D) Sonic games is that target-and-shoot-yourself-towards-the-enemy mechanic. I've never found using it fun (where's the game??) and I'd much rather strip it back to bare bones and then design the enemies and levels to suit the simpler control mechanics. Sonic is always at its best when it aims for elegant simplicity.

F-Zero is a Nintendo franchise and done by AV who acted as 3rd party developer with quality testing and publishing done by the Big N.
Sega's only participation is in the arcade game F-Zero GX. Sega will simply bury the F-Zero if they owned it. Just like Panzer Dragoon.

Sega lost too much money by the time 2000s came around. Only a high executive who founded sega and have saved up some fortune and was willing to give it up and inject into the company managed to keep sega alive as a software maker and publisher. What is left of sega own in house development team among her arcade and console domains who didnt quit the industry or left for other comoanies continue go keep sega alive at that time until a lot of them have grown old by now and have retired already.

One game by Sega I enjoyed on the PS2 that was Japan exclusive was Initial D Special Stage. I actually have a physical copy of that game and made a slight modification to my PS2 in order to play it since the console is region locked. But it's based on the Initial D Arcade Stage series. Initial D Arcade Stage Ver. 2 specifically. I also played Shinobi. Not a bad game. In my opinion, the Xbox had the beat Sega titles. Panzer Dragoon Orta which was what sold me to the Xbox, I had the bundle that came with Sega GT 2002 and Jet Set Radio Future. I didn't care much for Sega GT but I really enjoyed JSRF. I also have Shenmue II which I still play occasionally. As a kid I was really happy when Sonic Adventure 2 was coming to the Nintendo GameCube because I didn't have a Sega Dreamcast and this was my opportunity to finally play Sonic Adventure 2 I also had Sonic Adventure DX and the Sonic Mega Collection.

most "shining" fans hate post Camelot games, i kinda understand them, but still if not famous series is living - its not so bad as be forgoten. so i decide to play all of them to check...
Shining tears its fine game for 7.5\10...
shining force NEO its what i gonna finish maybe today and after 70+ hours of play and grind i can say - its easy 9\10, cant wait to check next
lol, a couple day ago i found chanel on YT where a guy shows all build of cancelled VECTORMAN 3... where be seen how developing goes wrong from decent 3d platformer to HALO.. and that IRONMAN is so look like it was maded on those builds)
When i saw that HULK gameplay i even through screen could feel it - this game was a base to PROTOTYPE 2009 game... maybe not engine, but scripts for sure

I think probably the best thing for Virtua Fighter was SEGA going third party. They should have included VF 3TB on the VF4 disc. Then we could play that game with a decent controller layout.

I remember seeing Sega Derby in my Truck stop. It had 10 stalls and was always busy.
I wonder if A) it would lose the whole loint of the game by porting it home, and B) if it made sense to bring it home, if it ecer did come home.
That was the last Sega Arcade game I saw in the wild.

To this day, there are a lot of people begging for SEGA to come back making consoles. That is not going to happen. SEGA ain't swimming in vault money (Scrooge McDuck), even though they are doing well. Besides, making a console costs money. Tons of money. Let's just say that they do that. If for some reason, the console doesn't sell well, a huge loss is going to affect the company. They don't want to take that risk.

The difference between Sega and Nintendo:
A)When Sega failed with Dreamcast, they folded called it quits, contented themselves with going 3rd party dev and their remains bought by Sammy.
B)When Nintenfo failed with Wii U, they continued for a whole console cycle of around 6 years (despite the noise wanting them to go like what Sega did) then came back with a vengeance with the Switch.

Nintendo has always been in a healthy position. Even during their “dark days” with the Wii U era, they were still in a comfortable spot. With Sega however, they were in a terrible position while operating at a loss and were unable to cover the losses generated by the Dreamcast.

You forgot about one thing. Nintendo was / is / will be always much richer company than Sega. Only Mario IP have higher value than whole Sega himself (excluding maybe Sonic).

Sega literally had no money left, there was no other move left to make. The press conference where they announced their exit from consoles was originally supposed to be the announcement of the company ending all together. Nintendo was still a highly successful company sitting on top of a mountain of money. Their merch was selling like crazy, their games were still selling huge numbers, their mini consoles were selling like crazy, and they were still making a profit off of the Wii u even with the low sales, and the 3ds was the second best selling console on the market
The thing is even when Nintendo does badly, they don't do badly. Look at this generation. GC gets destroyed by PS2, yet they still sold 80 million gba's. So, yeah, not really getting blown out so much when you remember they have other stuff to pull revenue from.
