    I found this old machine in my Mother's wardrobe and thought I would give it a go. However, I couldn't work out how the bobbin worked. Thanks to your excellent video I have managed to work it out and have just made a lovely 'envelope' cushion with some leftover curtain material from Laura Ashley! Thank you.

    The singer style-o-matic 328k is a beautiful machine. Unfortunately, it's also an under-appreciated machine. But, this was a type of machine that most individuals and/or families could afford and did buy. It was a popular mid-range model. They gave you the capability of not only doing decorative stitches. But more importantly, it had the very all-important Multi-Stitch disc. That was a cam with which enabled you to do mending and do clothing construction on the new stretch fabrics that were just coming out in the mid-60s. It's a beautiful little machine, fondly known as the little brown tank. There are two versions of this machine. The one that you have is the second version. The first version was a darker tan brown color. And had a different face plate. I actually prefer the first version over this one. But the quality is the same between either version. I would love to see you do an in-depth video on this model.

      Thank you for your comment.
      You're completely right: This model was afordable (did I spell that correct?)
      There are even more models. The later model had a light switch just below the top plate. Mine has not.
      Maybe I'll do some more videos on this machine, but with footage I already shot. This machine was sold a month ago. Hope that does not disapont you too much...
      Take care, Erik

    Thank you so much for this video. You get straight to the point, and the all the video work is beautiful! (And clear and helpful!!!)
    I just found this machine (identical to the one shown in this video in every way) at a resale shop, but didn't know anything about it other than it looked intact, and had a small label on the front showing that it had been serviced about a decade ago at a local reputable sewing machine shop. Chord looked good, bobbin in place, tire on the bobbin winder like new, etc. I cranked it by hand and it seemed everything worked. I bought it immediately, as it was only $25. I just plugged it in for the first time about two hours ago. The light works and everything seems to be in perfect woorking order. After I adjusted the tension, the stitches looked good front and back.
    The only problem: There is no manual and no accessories of any kind.
    I am not an expert either on sewing machines or sewing. The only thing I know is from a "home economics" class that boys were required to take when I was in seventh grade in the 1970s. My one project at that time was a cover for a large pillow. But I hope to learn something and have a few things in mind that I would like to do with this machine.

      Thank you so much for you message. It means the world to me that I was able to help someone.
      Congratulations on your machine. 25 usd is a fair price. Mine came with some cams (fashion discs)... You might want to have some too, so check marketplace or craigslist. Or you can 3d print them.
      (Tip: Change the bulb for a daylight-LED bulb.)
      The 328 is considered the latest great Singer, because its made from metal and not plastics like the ones after the 328.
      The manual can be found online. Even in de files section of certain Facebook-groups on vintage Singer sewing machines. Not having a manual shouldn't be a problem. They are very easy to work with.
      Have fun with your machine!
      Take care, Erik

      Unfortunately the 328 I used was not in its best shape, but I could tell it was a capable machine. Perhaps one of the last great Singers, because after/in the 1960's Singer started to use more plastics. But again: Great machines.

    The rest of this video completely worked with threading my machine - the only issue is I can't get the lower bobbin's to successfully catch on the upper thread.
    I've tried to replicate the process that you showed, with letting the thread go through the first aperture, then go under and through to the second aperture where the thread has barely any tension - but when I then turn the wheel, the lower thread never catches

    • @erikneek
      @erikneek  7 месяцев назад +1

      Hi Emily. Congratulations on your vintage Singer.
      Unfortunately I don't understand the issue and what you did. (English is not my native language, perhaps that has something to do with it.)
      Is you problem you are not able to catch the upper thread with the race-hook??? If so, I would suggest to first change everything for something else = change the bobbin underneath for another class 66 bobbin, change the thread for a thicker thread, change the needle for a new one and then try again. In WORST case scenario the timing is off. In best case scenario the thread you are using is not good enough.
      If this doesn't help: There are various Facebook groups on vintage Singer sewing machines. Perhaps you can join such a group and post a video and question there. There are hundreds or thousands of enthusiasts willing to help.
      I'm sure you will get it to work!
      Good luck!

    Hello! Do you still have this sewing machine? Or, another Singer 328? I got this model as a gift, but it has some tension problems. The bottom stitches on the fabric are not right. I disassembled the top tension (needle thread tension). When I compare with other machines on RUclips, mine is missing a stop dial washer. I'm a beginner to sewing, so I don't know if not having the washer could make a big difference on the stitches. Thank you!

    • @erikneek
      @erikneek  4 месяца назад +1

      Hi, thank you so much for watching and for your message.
      Unfortunately I sold my Singer 328k to make room for other Singer sewing machines.
      Missing a washed DOES make a difference. Like many other Singer parts you can order parts online. Simply look only for a parts manual and write down the Simanco (=SInger MANufacturing COmpany) part number. Then go to a sewing machine parts vendor and type in the part number you are looking for. When it comes to tension units: You can order the individual parts or the entire assembled tension unit.
      Are you on FB? You may want to join a Singer vintage sewing machine group and ask fellow members to post a picture of their machines.
      Good luck!

    Thank you for this, I’ve been threading my 328 incorrectly and I think that’s a source of a lot of my problems.
    What kind of grease do you use for the gears? I haven’t been able to find any Singer grease at any local sewing stores.

    • @erikneek
      @erikneek  Год назад +1

      Hi Kyle. I'm glad I was able to help you with your 328.
      Only a few spots need to be greased. I'd advise you to look in the manual if there is any doubt.
      I use normal ball baring grease. And only a small amount.
      There used to be Singer grease. But when the company (Singer) was sold there were a lot of changes. The Singer company now is not the same as in the first half of the century.
      Good luck!

    I can't find the on-off switch for the light bulb. Is it supposed to go on automatically when the machine is plugged in? Mine does not. I have replaced the bulb to make sure this is not a problem with the bulb.

    • @erikneek
      @erikneek  2 года назад +1

      Hi Karen,
      There are multiple versions of the 328. Some have an on/off switch near the tension unit on the front. Other do not have that switch, like my Singer 328k.
      I sold my machine so I can't check it. But I recall the light went on automatically when I plugged it into the mains socket.
      Hope this helps you.

      @@KarenPeters-pi2ne Hi Karen, that must be annoying. There are 2 possibilities: [1] the bulb doesn't work (or does not make contact with the contact points!), or [2] the unit is defective.

      Hi. I'm sorry to hear your 328k has a problem.
      You probably already did this: Is the needle position set to center? Have you set the other lever to a position other that 0 (zero)? Do you have a pattern disc in top of the machine?
      If so, please oil the inside of the machine too. Perhaps the old sewing machine oil has become sticky. Oil it again with sewing machine oil and let it set for a day. Then try again. If it doesn't help: Do it again and wait for another day.
      I'm sure you will get it working again.
      Good luck!!!
