"The fall of the greatest union, the fall of the biggest union, the fall of the best comrades, but it will never fall in peoples heart." - My random ingame sentence
1991 was really worse than I realized. I can’t imagine living through one crushing disaster after another. My own relationship I can attest felt like the breakup of the USSR, I empathize for Gorbachev trying in vain after so many mistakes and tragedies to save your union. If only the KGB had stared down Yeltsin and the coup had succeeded, post 1991 Russia has seen the greatest peacetime economic collapse in history and 4 million excess deaths occurred. Those traitors at belovezh should’ve been arrested. I feel the contemporary U.S. is resembling more and more the late Soviet Union 1988-91
The worst part is that the USSR did a referendum whether or not it should be dismantled and most of the population _chose to keep it._ And then Boris Yeltsin, alongside the Ukrainian and Belarusian Leaders [poetic, considering these three were the Creators of the Union.] dissolved the Union regardless. Its not that the Soviets shouldnt be dissolved, I can see why it should've, but if even the People chose to keep it is when it shouldnt. This is also ignoring the fact that Russia after this was in total chaos, nearly leading to Civil War, Chechnya spliting for awhile even. Russia nearly collapsed simply because of Yeltsin, the bastard broke the USSR and left Russia, not as a Democracy, but paved the way for Putin. He didn't bring Democracy, he brought way for Modern Russia. And it's still decades behind. Yeltsin may have had good intentions like Gorbachev, but unlike Gorbachev that tried, Yeltsin didn't.
Смотрите в 1991 году был референдум все проголосовали за сохранение СССР, Ельцина сняли с должности президента РСФСР и он устроил стрельбу на белый дом это оккупация захват власти.
The population did not choose to keep the concentration camp. The question at the referendum was about an updated federation of the republics, not about the keeping it all intact.
the footage of the empty shelves is emblematic of the starving 90s with the implementation of capitalism all over the former USSR......a very dark time for the former Soviets
It's actually from 1990/91, but yes this was happening because of free market reforms and privatisation. Although, it does go without saying that there were less severe shortages even before Gorbachev, mostly because the USSR focused almost solely on heavy industry, having comparitevly little light industry, importing most consumer goods. This was one of the former socialist bloc's biggest mistakes in my opinion.
@@yesdfgd8075 yeah I did some further research since writing this comment and found out that shortages predated the actual collapse and started getting bad following Gorbachev's attempted economic reforms
@@yesdfgd8075 you're right. That was a result of the "seige socialism" mentality wherein the socialist state was in a state of perpetual war readiness against the capitalist block. In my opinion, direct competition with the United States was a bad idea. And not waste such vast amount of money and resources on the military. That would have meant a broader focus on light industry and consumer goods production.
