We always forget the mild winters for the simple reason mild weather does not cause any problems. The exception is flooding as mild winters tend to be wet or very wet.

it was not every winter but The last great freeze of the higher Thames was in 1962-63. Frost fairs were a rare event even in the coldest parts of the Little Ice Age. Some of the recorded frost fairs were in 695, 1608, 1683-84, 1716, 1739-40, 1789, and 1814.

I remember Hurricane Sandy, a lot of people think NY got hit by the Hurricane, and we didn't, I remember that night and early morning like it was yesterday, we had no rain, well maybe a drizzle, no wind, but that night I watched as water from the ocean just started to slowly come up the beach, over the boardwalk, then it came in the street, and it kept coming, but it was really slow, some people were outside when the water hit, but like I said there was no rain, no wind, and the ocean water just came on land very slowly, and it didn't stop, at some pint in the middle of the night the water must have pushed on land faster because when we woke up everything was a disaster, there was nothing but sand everywhere. People lost their cars, and they got a lot of water damage in their homes, the worst part was losing the electric, it was cold and nobody had heat or lights for over a month, but we never got hit with the Hurricane, and I find that very odd.

As a weather buff I can say the human memory is very selective in remembering past weather. In the 1970s for example every winter from 1971-76 was mild or very mild.
We always forget the mild winters for the simple reason mild weather does not cause any problems. The exception is flooding as mild winters tend to be wet or very wet.

@@stevekenilworth The Frost Fairs you mention are the only ones with sufficient documentation to be considered to definately happened however there is (less definitive) evidence for more than just those events. Also, it's more than possible that the Thames froze sufficiently to allow foot and animal crossings but not sufficiently to support a full Fair, complete with buildings and (relatively) large numbers of people. It's doubtful the lower Thames froze at all...or, if so then at least far less frequently simply because tidal rivers are notoriously hard to freeze. We have several tidal rivers where I live and while we gets lots of snow, long periods of well beliw 0° weather and a our lakes and fresh water rivers and streams freeze regularly, I've never seen a tidal river freeze sufficiently to allow other than small animal foot traffic.

Every homeowner owns a few snow shovels, bags of rock salt handy, ice scrapers and possibly a roof snow rake. We don't install furnaces, water heaters or any type of plumbing in attics or exterior wall of the home, water supply services are buried at least 4 ft. below grade and roof are rated for the snow load and I have 50 inches of fiberglass insulation in the attic. So do i must be unbearable!!!
Can't home the homeless. That would involve building more and more houses. That would upset the people, most do not want any new houses to be built especially in their area. It might bring in the wrong type of people into their area. Their government doesn't want to increase housing supply because it will lower the property prices. No, the homeless will just have to sit this one out I guess. I'm alright Jack.
The solution is simple. Build thousands and thousands of new houses not apartments. The Chinese have the ability build houses efficiently and in less than half the time it takes a British builder. Get them to build, build, build, build... bring down house prices. If necessary build special units for the homeless where they are offered a roof over their heads.
Otherwise it's lip service...ooh how awful it must be for the homeless...
@@roops2939 Every housing development in the UK has to build a percentage as social housing, where I live house building has not stopped in 30 years, I think the bigger issue is who they are allocated to.
@@designer-garb572 what's social housing? What's that got to do with reducing homelessness?
@@roops2939 Houses with low-cost rent for those on low incomes, my comment was not meant as the resolution to homelessness it was an answer to your comment about building more and more houses
What would they do if they got a proper snowfall?
What happened to Global Warming? Weather was supposed to be warm and snow a thing of the past?
This is the effects of global warming. It changes weather patterns. How often does Southern England get slammed like this?
Everything is extreme now
@@dkpqzm Global Warming causes cold and snow. While Global Cooling causes warmth and no snow. Makes a lot of sense....
@@am56879 Off course. Global Warming causes everything to be extreme while Global Cooling causes everything to be mild. No one can deny the sound science in this. Just like how all the Pacific Islands are now all underwater ten years ago.
Can't argue with a idiot
Legend has it the guy who hit those cars is still sliding sideways down that road
That fella was defiantly on it
Looks beautiful. I see these images every year. It's a soft temporary lockdown.
GLOBAL WARMING!! GLOBAL WARMING!! What a HUGE LIE that is!!!
That looks more like New England where I am from than England!
N/E Scotland here, plenty snow on the hills -17 inland last night…No snow on the coast but -7 this morning, Brrrrrrr
Considering their latitude they are very lucky for the mild weather at the same latitude in Canada it was -20 this morning.
Gulf stream
i seen -10 three days on the trot this week
i think thats the coldest ive ever seen it get here in the uk
at least it wont snow here when its that cold
then for monday they have forecast 12°C lol
I'm CAnadian and used to snow like that, but I get the feeling in the UK they don't have the snow ploughs that we have and its possible they're not used to changing the car tires too. I got so fed up with that I leave my snows on all year round.
Looking at the traffic, it is quite clear these vehicles are not using winter tyres and or snow chains.
was it crazy snow or a dusting of snow ?
None at all in Leeds , not a flake?
What a meteorological year. Wasn't your summer record breakingly hot too?
WOW ... England and Scotland.... getting Montreal Canada weather.......Snowstorm just like here... Welcome to the club......!!!!
Send some snow here!! We have had nothing the last couple of years. So disappointing.
From the various commentators, it is not how heavy or light it is,it is the authorities who do sod-all about it.
Not in South West London yet, My daughter is watching the show.
I wonder if there is a slow down in the gulf stream? That's what keeps northern Europe from freezing.
