  • After back-to-back Hurricanes Eta and Iota destroyed their hometown in the mountains of Guatemala, this family was forced to migrate to the U.S. In the trek through Mexico, corrupt authorities and violent cartels preyed upon the little they had left.

The problem is, other than them coming to a stable situation like the US or Canada or England, how do you help these people? Their homes are destroyed, everywhere they turn, people are trying to rob them, they've got no chance and there's very little we can do to help them. We can just watch.

This makes me sick thinking of the suffering. And it makes me furious that there are people who abuse them and take advantage of their plight. Here in Morelia, Michoacán, we are not on a migrant route but do have Venezuelans and others passing through. Thank God there are people here who help. A family of Guatemalans just came through last week. All we can offer is a place to stay and food, medical attention if needed. And if the money is available, a bus ticket to continue the journey. Bothe the U.S. and Canada need more people to work, and these people would add so much to those countries. Yet all I hear are political infighting and the fears of the right wing. Sad😢.

Simple, economic migration is illegal for asylum. Also the international law for asylum says you have to seek asylum in the first safe country, which is Mexico. How quickly they pass up Mexico when it's definitely better than their country. Imagine your home floods in the US and then you fly to Europe and say you want asylum.... They won't take you. Is what's happening hard, yes, but it doesn't mean you can just come here illegally and have us take care of you...

The beatings by the police, and kidnapping by cartel members - one would think "fellow Catholics/Christians" would be more accommodating. And have enough sympathy in their hearts on POOR MIGRANTS. But, no - money is more important.
And those are the kind that tend to have big icons and other religious articles in their houses to show "how religious" they are. Doesn't really matter whether it's Christian, Islam, Jewish, Hindu, Buddha etc. Goes to show yet again that "spirituality" and one's "moral compass" matter the most. Not "religious affiliation" and fervour.

There are arguments that it is. You'd have to have more than a high school diploma to know about any of them though. The history of south America is riddled with U.S. intervention and meddling for the profit of U.S. corporations and the the U.S. government. Much of which set in motion the economic struggles that we see playing out today.
