Everyone that was at the front of the crowd essentially worked like a barrier, so we were headbanging like assholes while simultaneously keeping the mob from collapsing all over Brian and Brian. At some everyone at the front put our arms around each other just to ground ourselves, cause it was that fucking insane. After every sonic assault there would be a few moments to get our bearings, before the whole place exploded again. There were times I legitimately felt like I was close to passing out, and yet I was persisting entirely on adrenaline. Well in a interview about the creation of the game Thumper (which he did all the art and music/sound for), he stated that he doesn't really like being on stage because he's a introverted person.
I kind of want to be one of those security guards. They're clearly uncomfortable having to hold those people back and maintain a perimeter around the band just for the sake of the performace, but there's something appealing in being that stressed while listening to the music.
I love that some people are still making weird shit, you gotta realize they probably make enough to survive on and that's it. It's not the easy path in music but it's certainly interesting, call me a fan now
Brian Gibson is one of the saddest, most bummer people I've ever met. I met him at a festival in 2016, and I ADORE him and Chippendale. He was waiting to do an interview along with Chippendale, and I sat and talked with a bit about the festival, his recent video game Thumper, and about being a bassist like him. He never once smiled, every point he made sounded like he wanted to die and led down spirals of negativity. He almost made me cry, because he was being needlessly somber about... everything. I left after 15 minutes of one on one time with Gibson, even though I knew Chippendale was coming and leaving would mean I would never get to meet him, because he was THAT BAD. Brian G - whatever is up with you, get help, dude.

Shellac on At Action Park tour i had to sit down. Wasn't the volume so much, they just broke my spirit to stand doing these extended repetitions with silence in between. It's that song A Minute, the outro is just 30 seconds. At the show they laid into that for at least 5 minutes. DC black cat it was punishing
I had the privilege of seeing Lightning Bolt open for The Locust in Detroit long ago. First time ever at a show like that and I thought how bizarre is this shit. After the performance, I was totally blown away by the rawness and the realness of it all. Huge respect to LB for playing on the floor with the crowd around them, it really made it special!
I first came across this video about 6 years ago. I've been coming back to watch it again ever since. I really like to look at people, their emotions, movements. Every time I watch it, I find something new every time. This is truly a cool shoot and great editing.
Oivalf Music a great mixture of Incredible show of talent but also very emotionally driven. Some of those bass lines are just heart breaking if you look past the chaos.
I agree. This video prompted me to purchase a djembe and become lightning fast on it. Ive been practicing for 4 months now and im getting faster. I aspire to be able to play at this speed and with this intensity. Im so sick of talking to people, i just want to assault them with beauty and emotion like this
Nope, but it does share some characteristics. The drumming is way too fucking crazy and doesn't follow the 'kick snare' pattern of drum and bass. This is noise rock mixed with some other fucked up shit
I’ve watch this vid at least 100 times by now. This is such a beautiful and chaotic performance. I can’t really describe why but the breakdown starting at 4:50 until about 7:00 is almost cathartic to me easily one of my favorite sections of any song. The frantic drumming stops momentarily to make room for this beautiful triplet riff with Brian stoic in the face as always. Then Brian slowly comes back in with the drums but this time they are a more in control and deliberate as it turns into something that builds gradually back into the chaos that is Lightning Bolt. Amazing.
This video is a masterpiece! Not just the epic performance by LB, but the sound, camerawork, and editing are superb! I can't stop watching it with my speakers up to 11. Excellent work. Thank you.
this video has popped up on my youtube recommended for 4 years now. I put it in my watch later countless times. not sure what drove me to finally click on it today. I wouldn’t have been ready for this 4 years ago, but I am now and very thankful that I finally checked it out.
Every few days I come back to this video. The raw energy and noise is ecstatic. As a drummer, I will always tip my hat down to the man Brian. I wanna play some crazy fun music like this someday. Bless him, mane. Bless him
I always love these bands where it's either just three or two people, making the raunchiest and monstrous sound that can make them sound like they're a full band.
His guitar playing and stature make all that much better he has to stay calm and focus harnessing all that energy while the world around him is in chaos. Fucking awesome lol
@@gogetavsvegito no, just bass. bass and guitar are completely exclusive and vastly different. honest mistake on ur part, that other guy is a dick, he shoulda just explained it.
Garrett G Looks more like sombody who's very present, just not trying to impress anyone. I know it looks strange when you're used to seeing all thi fake stage enthusiasm. Brian is probably alright, perhaps tired, but alright. Anyway wtf do I know. I'm not him.
Eno Eyes I know that as someone who is preforming music he is probably really in the moment and focusing on playing properly, but the way he looks makes him look like he would rather be at home relaxing.
Garrett G Yeah i know what you mean. I'm guessing what's happening is that Chippendale hears Gibson just fine while he plays, and is sort of a tempest, which Gibson has to remain focused like the captain of a ship as he sails the storm. Gibson prolly has to look for cues and listen the way a semi-def person reads lips, he reads drumming. Doing all that while playing the right notes and looking around occasionally so he doesn't get killed by something. To me he kinda looks like a channeler, concentrating on the magic of things and lining everything up.
The contrast between these two is so sick, one guy seems like he is just chilling playing his bass, the other guy looks like he is posessed by a fucking demon playing his drums
This is what channeling the way you feel into your instrument looks like. This is beautiful to me because I know exactly how that feels. There’s not a drug or fuck you can compare that feeling to. Look at how happy those people are.
the cheeky little shift in tempo that Brian C. pushes in 4:37 truly makes me feel alive. how Brian G. starts dragging but recomposes almost immediately makes it even better.
This is so sick, it's impossible to not watch. Repeatedly. And I thought the cutting edge was dead. Thank you Lightning Bolt. It's like 1988 all over again.
0:47 whoever panned the camera to the pedal board. I thank you. I've been trying to get a concrete view of what Gibson uses for pedals. especially for what he uses on Dead cowboy. W camera person.
hella was actually booked with this band in like 2001 for their first show, both Zach and Spencer watched they play (there's a video out there for that on which I can link here)
I wish I could like this 5000x more times. Truest example of a band sonically making love to the audience and the audience absolutely loving them back.
I love how they start the song with a tempo slowlier than the recording and then Brian C starts to push the tempo even higher ad the song goes and on. Complete madness.
I love how they play on the ground and let the crowd circle them... it feels so primitive and its performance art. The music is extremely original and I even hear some bop jazz in there! The drums are HOT. A+ on the film production.
They have always played like this. I saw them well over 15 years ago, they set up in the middle of the crowd during the opening band's set and started playing as soon as they were finished.
That was unlike anything I've experienced in my entire life. I found this to be like 'spiritual art-noise'. Really quite exhilerating. Top stuff, people. Love and light. 🤗♥️

It's not the easy path in music but it's certainly interesting, call me a fan now
The bass player worked at Harmonix (the company that made Guitar Hero/Rock Band) for years, and made the game Thumper.
Me too. I value this a lot because it sounds cool as hell and they are clearly pushing their musical vision and no one else's.
Crash Blakmor how does this sound cool as hell? You’re probably an idiot for considering this music. This is an insult to music
Then don't listen to it Nazi twat.
@@Mr_Sandman-s3q i'd like to hear what you consider music, dickhead

It's like the bass player is wearing a mask too.
Yeah...
Poker Face mask.

That audience is rad, Japan rules. I need to see Lightning Bolt live one day, their shows look like some of the most fun.
Japan audiences has the respect people had in music shows back in the day.
I found this video 7 or 6 years ago and it changed my life. Forever a superfan of these guys.
Came here by accident. Did not look away. Fire.
Lightning bolt is the only show I remember actually getting physically ill from how unbelievably loud it was. They are really an amazing live act.
That's loud!
Man's not gonn survive mbv
@@chrisr7419 Oh hi Chris-R. i saw mbv a few years back and somehow survived i guess but i'm gonna see lightning bolt in a few days, i guess we'll see what happens
Mine is Swans lmao
Shellac on At Action Park tour i had to sit down. Wasn't the volume so much, they just broke my spirit to stand doing these extended repetitions with silence in between. It's that song A Minute, the outro is just 30 seconds. At the show they laid into that for at least 5 minutes. DC black cat it was punishing
I watch this instead of drinking coffee
I do both!
Jay T what are you? Wreckless?
I do this instead of freebasing cocaine
I do this instead of parachuting using meathooks to attach me to the cords instead of a harness,
Look for the video!
Man, this is very accurate. I felt how this music transfers me the energy.
It makes you wish you're an audience member
This is what I thought metal was before I knew what metal was.
Noise rock is confused for metal just as many times as hardcore is confused for grindcore
@@thatsalotofdamage8568 and all of it is great, hence why so many artists cross them in their misic!

Fuck this hipster trash but long live glassjaw!!!🤙😎🤙
@@christopherdeftones2878 Rhode Island, dipshit. And Lightning Bolt has been at it for a long time now. What's so "hipster" about it?
It's weird seeing lightning bolt outdoors and in HD rather than in some crowded shack with with 4 pixels
Saw them in house in Asheville in 06
This is honestly one of the most inspiring things I've ever seen.
Oivalf Music a great mixture of Incredible show of talent but also very emotionally driven. Some of those bass lines are just heart breaking if you look past the chaos.
Lightning Bolt - Dead Cowboy @ TAICOCLUB'14 0731am 3.9.22 they aspire to garner your affectation...
I agree. This video prompted me to purchase a djembe and become lightning fast on it. Ive been practicing for 4 months now and im getting faster. I aspire to be able to play at this speed and with this intensity. Im so sick of talking to people, i just want to assault them with beauty and emotion like this
Im so glad I learned of noise rock. Changed my life. Its my kind of jazz.

Can this be considered drum and bass?
+MyHerpderp Squarepusher certified them, so yes, yes indeed.
+MyHerpderp no
i mean, its a drummer and a bass player, but no
Nope, but it does share some characteristics. The drumming is way too fucking crazy and doesn't follow the 'kick snare' pattern of drum and bass. This is noise rock mixed with some other fucked up shit
Nobody knows
The joke
Your head
its like if the guy from texas chainsaw massacre went to art school in berwyn PA
Close, Rhode Island ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) They met at art school, allegedly ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
He went to Conestoga High School in berwyn PA
What if it's the other way around, and the texas chainsaw massacre dude quit his band, dropped out of art school and turned to serial killing
Lol, you tell hes one of those dudes that paid money to go to art school, by the way it sounds.
That's so specific
I’ve watch this vid at least 100 times by now. This is such a beautiful and chaotic performance. I can’t really describe why but the breakdown starting at 4:50 until about 7:00 is almost cathartic to me easily one of my favorite sections of any song. The frantic drumming stops momentarily to make room for this beautiful triplet riff with Brian stoic in the face as always. Then Brian slowly comes back in with the drums but this time they are a more in control and deliberate as it turns into something that builds gradually back into the chaos that is Lightning Bolt. Amazing.
agree!
Yeah I agree one of the pinpoint parts of the performance that catches my memory
i start to physically get chills whenever the section starts, it’s incredible
The cameramen must be wearing some heavy-duty earplugs. You can almost see the lens flexing from Brian's drumming when they do close up shots.
This video is a masterpiece! Not just the epic performance by LB, but the sound, camerawork, and editing are superb! I can't stop watching it with my speakers up to 11. Excellent work. Thank you.
I feel you.
shed a tear when i heard this because its an absolute masterpiece
"this is hell"
"I love it 🥲"
this video has popped up on my youtube recommended for 4 years now. I put it in my watch later countless times. not sure what drove me to finally click on it today. I wouldn’t have been ready for this 4 years ago, but I am now and very thankful that I finally checked it out.
every two months i check on this video for motivation
Doing my 2-month check up right now
This is my favorite live performance of all time.
I've seen these guys live a couple times, it's like being in a Black Friday sale in the seventh layer of hell
i felt like i was watching the universe being created
Every few days I come back to this video. The raw energy and noise is ecstatic. As a drummer, I will always tip my hat down to the man Brian. I wanna play some crazy fun music like this someday. Bless him, mane. Bless him
I always love these bands where it's either just three or two people, making the raunchiest and monstrous sound that can make them sound like they're a full band.
Pig Destroyer's early days come to mind
CHERUBS
This makes me cry every time I watch it. Insanely powerful
because you wish you were there!!! I felt the same exact way
I totally agree. Something about it strikes a chord in me. It makes me feel almost triumphant.
First time seeing this group today, I’ve already watched this performance many times, the energy here is insane!
1:38 Thanks for tuning your bass. It really made a big difference.
Imagine if they played Woodstock 1969.

@@gogetavsvegito no, just bass. bass and guitar are completely exclusive and vastly different. honest mistake on ur part, that other guy is a dick, he shoulda just explained it.
The next band is on the stage wondering 'how the hell are we going to follow this?!?'
The next band probably broke up, because what's even the point after seeing that??
By playing Wonderwall
i feel like once or twice a show gibson looks around like "what the fuck is going on?"
I think maybe he doesn't always hear the drums 10/10
he looks pretty absent minded the whole time, like he would rather be anywhere else
This performance gives me an incredible amount of inspiration.
That towel giving attempt was so compassionately beautiful
my daily vaccine since 2014 and i'm healthier than ever! pure, uncut and real music for the well-being! THANKS GUYS!
I have once again returned to enjoy noise rock in its most primal form
other bands take note and the filming is ace, reminds me of the 69 woodstock. 10 outa 10
It's like Woodstock but replace the LSD with amphetamines.
the cheeky little shift in tempo that Brian C. pushes in 4:37 truly makes me feel alive. how Brian G. starts dragging but recomposes almost immediately makes it even better.
This video has so much energy it charges my phone
This is so sick, it's impossible to not watch. Repeatedly. And I thought the cutting edge was dead. Thank you Lightning Bolt. It's like 1988 all over again.
0:47 whoever panned the camera to the pedal board. I thank you. I've been trying to get a concrete view of what Gibson uses for pedals. especially for what he uses on Dead cowboy. W camera person.
This band and Fugazi were hands down the 2 best live bands I've ever had the pleasure of seeing.
the bass player could be an extraordinary lawyer
Probably one of the best acts in the world...not saying that lightly
this is The Godfather of LB live vids.
Ever seen the all tomorrow parties 13 monsters video?
I'm getting some Hella vibes from these two beasts.
hella was actually booked with this band in like 2001 for their first show, both Zach and Spencer watched they play (there's a video out there for that on which I can link here)
I wish I could like this 5000x more times. Truest example of a band sonically making love to the audience and the audience absolutely loving them back.
libinal!
I love the dude who goes upside down while crows surfing and his legs just start flailing above the crowd.
They have always played like this. I saw them well over 15 years ago, they set up in the middle of the crowd during the opening band's set and started playing as soon as they were finished.
time for my daily viewing of this
The most amazing live performance i have ever seen!
