  • Today's podcast is a very special one on Tata Motors. Editor Sirish Chandran and Adil Jal Darukhanawala start with the brand's history in the mid-1900s. They also talk about how Tata Motors almost collaborated with Porsche to manufacture the Beetle in India. Then came Tata Motors' famous tie-up with Mercedes to manufacture trucks in India. This tie-up set up the base for Tata Motors' truck business in India, which then later allowed them to start manufacturing cars like the Tata Sierra and the Tata Estate. Then came the iconic Tata Sumo and the Tata Safari. Tata Motors then shifted focus to small cars, starting with the Indica, the platform of which is still in use by the Nexon. Adil gives us an insight into how the people within Tata Motors contributed to its image and success. All of which later helped Tata Motors acquire Jaguar-Land Rover from Ford. They also talk about the Punch, Harrier, and the Safari, and how the entire Tata Motors' portfolio is five-start safety rated, making it one of the safest car brands in India. And then moving on to upcoming cars from Tata Motors like the Harrier.ev, Curvv, and the Sierra. It's a long podcast, but this one is really, really special.

This is simply awesome. Not a minute wasted. Don't worry about how long the podcast is, I watched it in small periods over a day and loved it. If its not too much to ask for, can we have Adil's thoughts on all the failed manufacturers, GM, Ford, Chevrolet, Opel, Mitsubishi, Peugeot etc. etc. on what they could have done right. Sirish is also extremely knowledgeable. Say 20 years down the line, Sirish is going to be in Adil's chair with some young bloke asking him questions and he throwing out pearls of wisdom. You guys absolutely rocked it.

This is top quality content here. Hope you guys can continue this. It's fun informative and fascinating to listen to all the insights and backstories of cars and manufactures in India. For years we've just been fed plain old car reviews to consume digitally, this is such a breath of fresh air. When you put out such quality content i hope you don't worry about the viewership or the audience because that will come naturally with time. It's important to put this body of work out there, which in this case is this wonderful podcast, and people can find it whenever they do
Small suggestion as a young and huge consumer of content on RUclips, you guys should make cips of interesting bits in these podcasts and post them as shorts on RUclips. It'll help you grow organically, improve your reach, get more people interested and reach more eyes. Cause the quality of content on offer definitely needs more people watching/listening to it!!

That engine of 407 is called 497SP (4 cyl - 97mm bore) and it's being used till date. And yes, Tata trucks are engineered for carrying much higher payloads than what is rated. Here in KL, Tata SE 1613 is the favourite choice to carry wood/logs. The rated load limit of 1613 is 16 tons, while it easily carries 25 tons without breaking the axle 🥵

    Hello Gentleman 🤝It s a Nice Podcast
In my opinion Tata Motors compare to Toyota, has long way to go in terms of QDR
    Quality 🕺
    Durability🕺
    Reliability 🕺
Best example I can tell u-- People buy Innova Hycross by closing there eyes , without thinking too much no matter how much is the💰 Price💰 for top varient, same cannot be said to Tata Safari or Harrier because of Poor QC in their manufacturing process, they r improving but still long way to go🤦
    be it,
    Engine refinement
    Hard Truck like clutch 🤦
Lack of crisp and smooth Gear box
    Paint Quality & consistency
    Electronic malfunctions
    Worst connected car experience 🤦
    Panel gaps, poor alignment
    List goes on.........🤦
Finess what they call in car manufacturing is missing in there final product,
The final Touch matters, before the car comes out of their plant,
Even Tata car resale value is Poor
Hope they improve in the coming years

Yap… most awaited podcast. Tata is still neglected talent; even today despite of huge RnD and better indigenous products… people still label them as assembler and some rival brand taint their image further with their PR team.
Apart from Tata luxury van… there was also a sedan concept that was taken over by ambitious Safari project.
I feel there are certain mistakes, like naming the FWD Gravitas as Safari with no AWD or 4x4; rather they could’ve made better ladder framed Safari like the ScorpioN.
Wish to see Sumo with better in-house technology n build for hard core off-roading and Hexa for sheer luxury on wheels that betters the likes of Carnival in future.
Perhaps there are certain topics that I missed like the Tata’s ambitious project like the OneCAT(Compressed Air Technology) with collaboration with France based MDI. And next is, what made them roll the badge engineered Renault Trafic ancient version as Winger… if there’s any good reason then why not further like the Tata engineered Duster as we know Duster chassis dynamics is still unmatchable.

Have you seen recent truck driver interviews??
Many truck drivers who have experience.. when asked.. have declared that Leyland trucks are better for them and when they buy any truck with their own money they will buy Leyland truck..
Tata cars are safe when it comes to testing parameters of NCAP..
But doing 4 lakh kilometres in a car is something very for Tata cars..
We owned tata years ago and yes it was difficult to maintain car nothing in that car was simple

Nobody talks about elephant in the room. Tata motors Quality Control is even poor than Mahindra motors and their service network is way worst. If quality control can match up to Hyundai or Toyota, so as the service then we can say they have really improved until then people would be scared to touch their cars and who have purchased already will be left frustrated if there would have been any issues.

CURVV in no way looks like URUS. it's more like GLE, X6. The reason, CURVV showcased at BMS feels so disproportionate from side view is, the C pillar starts sloping too early. It should start to lean little behind, to provide more headroom and to look proportionate. Not ignoring the fact that undersized wheels with karol bhag like chhapri kind of flower petal shaped alloys looks wacky.
Hope they surprise all, by launching CURVV in whole new shape than what was showcased multiple times. Bcz the spy shots hints at two different kind of coupe shape prototypes being test simultaneously. 🧐🤔

I dislike TATA cars now only because all the cars look the same from the front. Individuality is lacking I feel. Nexon, Punch, Harrier Safari all look the same from the front only the sizes and minute details are different.

@@nou7401 Well can't argue with that either. So for us its either safety or reliability. Getting both is going to mean, we select a German brand, with expensive service. And don't get me wrong, I have been with Tata for the past 20 years. One thing has been consistent, poor quality control. So I moved to Mahindra. I hope it's better.

They should bring back the JTP branding and just call it the Altroz JTP instead of that stupid "Racer" name. Tata Motors probably sees the JTP/JTSV name as a failure in their books which could be a reason to kill it forever. And that is just sad because it wasn't a failure, they made two of the most amazing and underrated cars ever to be sold in the country. They just failed at marketing them. They don't realise the value of that badge.
