The US embargo is not the reason for the survival of these cars. Nearly all private property was eventually confiscated in Cuba, but anyone who owned a car as of Jan. 1, 1959 was allowed to keep it, or pass it to a close family member. Since the average person had virtually no chance to ever get a new car, the old ones (mostly American) have been kept running in any way possible. Anyone who owns one is very fortunate.

The epitome of perfect cars, cars these days are so ugly! To me, 50's cars look more futuristic. I feel so happy when I see an old legend like these get a 2nd life and back on the road again.

Watching this is like going into a time warp. I was a kid in the 1950's, and I know all the makes in this video better than I do all the Japanese and South Korean cars we have now. DeSoto and Packard weren't the only cars that went out of business in the 1950's, so also did Hudson, Nash, Willys and Kaiser. Studebaker died in the 60's. The Nash Rambler and Willys Jeep survived and became part of American Motors, which was taken over by Chrysler in the 1970's.
Of course, in the 2000's we lost Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Mercury (Plymouth was already long gone by then).

Cuba looks like they stuck in time. I hope they will not wake up, because it's looks majestic and nostalgic.

In Cuba they have corrosive sea salt. This means there isn't much original material left in the bodies of the vehicles.

I saw an article online about how cuban mechanics are wizards of modifying parts and using totally different parts from other makes and models when they can't find original parts of those old cars...actually I have experienced talent of latin mechanics in usa too!

A mixture of rusting wrecks with a Honda engine under the bonnet and some absolute beauties with great engines under the hood that have got real go in them. I've been in both types, mostly Chevrolets of various ages. Thoroughly recommend you have a ride in these when you go to Cuba. At least one couple in Havana now have their own private business restoring and maintaining these chrome laden classics. Cuba is facing changing times. I just hope it's more for the good because they are wonderful people with a special culture. Someone once said "They have nothing & they have everything!" If you ever get to Cuba, and I don't just mean Havana (see the rest of the country) you will understand what I mean. As outsiders we can but hope that the changing cultural influence that will come from the US is mainly for the positive without the importation of corruption, drug trafficking and it's associated crime levels and that Cuba is not swamped by US domination. I don't mean that as an anti US rant because the Americans have so much to give. I just worry about what is special about Cuba. As you can guess. I LOVE the place!

single headlights were outlawed after 1956, because when one element burned out, people drive around with the high beams on

The only thing classic about these vehicles are the shells. All internal components are a mish mash of Russian, homemade and cannibalized parts from other vehicles. They may look nice, but not worth much.

I don't know where the guys got your information from just because cars showed up in 1957 with dual headlights that didn't mean they started in 1957 cars they're actually 58 models cars that sales started in September of 1957 but they're actually 1958 cars and as far as the Ford coming out with the Edsel it was not a fiasco it was a car design in honor of his son who had died so don't be so ignorant learn your facts
