Top 10 Major Cities and Towns in Kenya, in terms of Build Up area in 2021

- Most Developed Towns in Kenya
1. Nairobi
As the capital city of Kenya, Nairobi has grown since independence and currently, it is among Africa’s most preferred business hubs. The development in Nairobi has come with better facilities, ease to do businesses and the vast market that comes with the big population. The national government together with county government are planning to upgrade facilities like roads, housing, sewerage systems etc.
2. Mombasa
Over the years Mombasa has been one of the most beautiful tourist destinations in the country. The town is also among the oldest in the country. Currently, Mombasa has grown in broad terms like more industries, hotels, roads and the current seating governor, Ali Joho is planning to expand the town further.
3. Nakuru Town
Nakuru town was previously the major trading centre fo the whole of Rift valley, but as per the new constitution is the trading centre for Nakuru county. The history of Nakuru town dates backs in 1900 when it used to be a camp for people who were building the railways line. It is the fourth largest town in the country with major revenues coming from tourism as some of the lakes are located its environs
4. Kisumu Town
Another town that is most developed in Kenya is Kisumu town. As the third-largest town, it plays a major role in trading activities in the lake region. Currently, it is the headquarter Nyanza county.
5. Thika Town
Thika town is known as the industrial town of Kenya. The number of the industries in Thika is growing each day; some of the big industries you will find in this town include Bidco Industries ltd, Kenblest Group, Capwell industries, Kenya Vehicle Manufacturers, etc.
6. Eldoret Town
Eldoret town is an agricultural-based town that is located in Uasin Gishu and it is the fifth-largest town in Kenya. It is the home town for many Athletes in Kenya. Unlike many towns which grew as a result of colonialism, Eldoret was a town basically started by farmers.
Towns in Kenya emerged as a result of different reasons including colonial centre, trading centre, industrial centre or even agricultural centres. Most developed towns in Kenya are the development hubs in which the country’s future growth may base on. The Kenyan government should look into more ways to ensure that even as this development continues, it is managed to ensure that they do not end up with bad plans. In current cities like Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu the rate of growth in the settlement did not grow at the same rate with facilities hence leading to problems such as overpopulation, poor housing and slum development, flooding, increased crime etc.

He has drone footage for all of the towns he listed. This video are all of the towns.

The layout of the cities is so beautiful. Drone shots are such a treat. Thank you 🙏 for the videos, it’s a virtual tour for me!
You most welcome Brother. Get to know the major cities in Kenya.
As a non-kenyan African this video is very informative. I have been to Kenya numerous times in the past but before I began following your channel I only really knew of Nairobi/Mombasa/Kisumu/Naivasha and Nakuru and have only visit Nairobi and Mombasa and had a pitstop in Voi. Now when I come to visit next year I will try to visit all those towns and cities. You should start a Travel agency to show Kenya to visitors. I will be the first to book you. LOL.
Next, travel to the North. We need to see towns like Lodwar, Wajir, Garissa, Mandera, etc. Nice work as always. Also, I was surprised Kakamege didnt make the cut.
I concur.What happened to Kakamega?
Moyale marsabit... Busia can also be numbered!
@@charlesmakanga7927 seems like Kakamega still lags the numbered town regarding the built area
@@kinotimiara2868 though Busia, Malaba, Kitale, Bungoma, etc are still small towns
So which criteria was he using?

Just wow! Thank you for the great words.
Where is Kakamega city
@@AfrikanTraveller u did not place Kakamega anywhere
This clearly shows the development disparity in the country where all the niceties are concentrated in Nairobi.
Devolution came to solve this problem but a lot more still needs to be done.
i was hoping kakamega would feature in there. not from that area but i have toured there once and found it way developed than the meru or even machakos. otherwise you did a good job highlighting our country and showing the potential it has and growth it has achieved.
Great work John! You really taught me about Kenya 🇰🇪. Your Drone work is ALWAYS phenomenal. Thank you from 🇺🇸. 👊🏾👍🏾
Thenk you so much Deg.
@@AfrikanTraveller John... your Channel had become SO GOOD. Real Talk. No ONE has your content. So happy for you. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I agree with most of your assessment especially Nyeri. It has stagnated for sometime. It’s true Naivasha and a few others need some facelift. I have followed most of your content and I can image it must have been challenging to rank these cities considering some cities like Kakamega and Kericho were arguably impressive. What really stood out for me is the need continue planning our cities due to rapid urbanization and I hope your work will create the necessary awareness for this to happen. What you have revealed here is a pretty good appetite for growth which can even be greater with continued good governance. It is now up to the local governments to creat robust systems like Public Works that can be responsible for creating clean cities. Kenya is destined to be a SubSaharan giant, we need to continue picking good leaders! God bless 🇰🇪.
Well said Brother, Kakamega and Kericho are well planned towns compared to most though they are small in size.
@@AfrikanTraveller bungoma town, kitale, busia, limuru, kiambu, nanyuki are bigger than navaisha, meru, and embu, navaisha is just like Garrissa,it only hotels make it popular
My 2 favorite cities Nairobi and Nakuru.
Ranking cities and towns is quite tricky because people look for different things but you did a nice job. Naivasha can grow faster than other towns because of its strategic location. Thika is also very advanced especially because of industries and real estate. I'm thinking of settling in Nakuru because it's affordable, not as chaotic as Nairobi, and it has everything I need.
Tuhamie Nakuru I am thinking about it.
Kisii is a special case, It is mainly financed by remittances from people in diaspora and around 2004 it become the hub for free primary education funds for a large area from Kericho, Narok, Bomet, Migori and Homabay. Its main shortcoming is lack of space
Remittances is the main driver of kisii so many kisiis have ended up abroad .abagusii are hugely overrepresented when it comes to the diaspora population . almost every family these days has a relative in the US , UK , Canada or Gulf countries plus more kisiis from Nairobi and other parts of the country prefer to invest back home
1. Nairobi
2. Mombasa
3. Kisumu
4. Nakuru
5. Eldoret
6. Thika
7. Kisii
8. Kakamega
9. Malindi
10. Machakos
😏😏😏sasa tumeelewana, uko poa sasa?
🙌🏾
Not far off my list😊😊👍👍
Kericho is underrated
Thika and Machakos are part of Nairobi Metropolitan not easy telling where Nairobi ends and the two towns start.
I don't care where you come from or who are the indigenous people of these cities I am just happy towns in Kenya are growing and it gives you a chance to exploit opportunities in these cities.
The Consistent of quality of content of this channel is unmatched. Bravo

Between Kisumu and Nakuru, it's debatable. For me I think Nakuru is bigger than Kisumu even though Kisumu's CBD is bigger
Obviously Nakuru is bigger than Kisumu, but Kisumu CBD beat Nakuru by far
waaaat buda kisumu ni bigi have u ever been their
I agree with you on Meru and Nyeri, they are huge yet very poorly planned making them look like huge slums with old rusty mabati structures right in the middle of the town.
It really destroys the image of the cities.
You are the only RUclipsr who is well planned,, good work bro ,,go also to north Kenya
The video is perfect am happy to see Machakos, Meru, Nyeri and Embu town in the list. They are as big as Kericho and Kakamega.I love Embu. It's a big town. Thanks for the video

This is an awesome coverage and analysis. Getting to understand the different cities/towns within our boundaries. Nice shots indeed. Thanks for taking your time to do such a great review.
My poor town Kitale cannot even make in top ten and was a great town in the 1980-90s. Some towns have grown due to devolution and some haven't
Am not here to anything wrong just opinion apart from Nairobi, Mombasa, kisumu Kenya, others cities doesn't have better and beautiful roads network but high building in Nigeria we value road networks and building environment for busines , railine, ports, and mansions also every of our cities have flyovers though Africa is still rising anyway beautiful cities love to visit especially Nairobi and Mombasa
Yes! i have totally enjoyed this journey. Thankyou so much AfriKan Traveller, Keep it up
Beautiful shot. A lot of work put in. Most appreciated.
I never knew that Kenya had cities & towns that were developed to that level. If only Kenya dealt with widespread corruption & betrayal politics it can actually go far. Anybody listening out there ??
Are you Kenyan?
This was a well thought idea and quite timely. Well put together. Good job Afrikan traveller.
7:18 nice insight on the Kenyan urban centers, eldoret was before known as area 64 good farming area the boers came to settle in eldoret back then after moving from south Africa away from the British, was known as area sixty four, though the locals had problems pronouncing sixty four, instead they say it as sisibo
Btw we still have places called 64 to date.
That's a very fair analysis and depicts the real picture and I totally agree with you concerning Nyeri and Meru coz the cash flow and income per capital is high in those areas compared to most parts of Kenya but those towns have almost a stagnated growth line and are poorly planned and that should give a wake up call to the respective county governments and urban planners.
Thanks for sharing your journey! Great explanation! Well organized! I’m waiting for more!
Excellent work there... I really think Kakamega and Kericho should've been featured, they probably rank better than Nyeri and Naivasha but thanks for the good work!
Drone shots are great. Make for an excellent view and exciting videos. Keep it up
Your drone shots of Meru was a huge lost opportunity. You missed out on the better structured parts of it like the Stadium, Makutano, Kithoka residential area which looks like Muthaiga with posh bungalows as well as Kaaga which is the educational zone.
Industrial area...kpcu ..meru milk plant..plus.water at kathita near town ...outcast where githongo tea name man you should date us to guide u next time you come
I will revisit Meru, seems like I missed a lot during my visit.

People like Afrikan traveller need to be in government, yani imagine this guy as the minister of tourism and having all those resources. He would achieve wonders.
They get to government and leave their brains at the door
Something you should understand, the city is not measured with number of buildings it has alone brother. There are factors such as good road network, area per square kilometres , airport and other different social amenities. Kakamega has the best road network in Kenya as compared to Kisii and embu. Kakamega has the third largest stadium in Kenya after kasarani and nyayo stadium. Kakamega has the biggest population after Nairobi. The room for expansion for kakamega is five times bigger than Kisii. Your analysis is not right brother but still a good job.
He literally put that disclaimer at the beginning lol.
Y compare with kakamega with kisii my friend kisii already proposed by the Senate after Nakuru next city will be kisii acha vitina kama wangeangalia ukubwa wa county it means kitui garisa ni kubwa mara mia na hamsini kulko kakamega.
I have personally lived in Kakamega I can say is that the town has not yet developed to it's capacity. It is well planned and well spaced out, with good roads but lags behind in terms of commercial structures. It seems to still have too much space to be filled. Hopefully it seems to be developing at a faster rate than some of the towns in the video. Moreover, for Kakamega to beat Kisii and Nyeri for example, the government needs to lease more land to private investors, because the majority of the town is filled with old government offices which consume a lot of space.
He stated his methodology. New Delhi is One the largest cities in the world by population. No one thinks about it when mentioning global cities
I think Bungoma too Should be Ranking ahead of Machakos. The place is well developed with wider roads & Grid streets. It also has a railway link & an expandable airstrip. Bungoma is extremely Underated
Great job bro, more grace.
Next time huende na uko om, you cover Kibwezi-Kitui highway upto Mwingi ...
Hopefully someday
Good work. Update us on mau mau road
I will do that, let me plan for it.
So beautiful cities and towns, nice work
I knew this video will have a lot of controversies, everybody will be biased towards their hometowns. Apart from the top 5: Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru & Eldoret, the rest are debatable and it is really difficult to number them. It is like comparing Nairobi and Dar. To minimize the debate, you could probably do top towns for each region.
I think kisii should be out of that controversy coz from the drone shots it is in the league of Nakuru and eldoret despite narrow roads .
@@africaneyetv467 Correct
@@africaneyetv467 lol.....don't stretch it too far.....

Kakamega believe it or not only ranks high due to high population but in size of built up area it is smaller than even the likes of thika embu or nyeri. I live in kk but I have travelled to the other towns and largely agree with the list. Kisii btw if you visit you get the sense it will even overtake Eldoret in terms of built up area
I mean If you've visited there recently you would've considered changimg your statement.
But I know Afrikan Traveller is unbiased so I'm waiting for the next future town video for it to be included
Most of Kenyan cities are so green. Even Mombasa is greener than I thought!

Today I have reserved my comments. But it was a very good job @afrikan traveller
Very well ranked but you have included honourable mentions like Kakamega, Kericho and the likes...
*should*
I have lived and worked in Nakuru town it lags behind Eldoret and Kisii in regards to growth due to the aging population and more opportunities created by devolution in other towns in the county like Molo Gilgil and Naivasha and also proximity to Nairobi leaves it at a disadvantage. Contrary to common belief Nakuru grew as an administrative hub rather than an agricultural center therefore after devolution it lost out to other counties which have more agricultural investment like Kericho, Narok,Trans Nzoia, Uasingishu Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet
Correct
A choice between Kisii and Nakuru I will choose Kisii anytime any day.
@@innocentodongo8011 odongo I come from kisii but bro Nakuru is better in terms of roads and more investment than kisii let's be open kisii has poor leader s with no future of planning the town.
@@africaneyetv467 That is you and this is me. And me is saying I will choose Kisii over Nakuru
Nakuru is way advanced compared to Kisii. It's pointless to compare the two to be honest. Nakuru can Rival Kisumu & Mombasa on a number of things. It's very big
Nakuru's major problem is the inability to construct storey houses with more than 5 floors due to the volcanic soil. It still beats Eldoret
Nice detail.
Great to see the list after the big 2.
Many green cities growing fast.
Malindi my hometown✌🇰🇪

I agree Machakos is so well planned
Great work. Nice drone shots. Your analysis reflects a true picture especially the first 6, Meru, Nyeri, and Malindi. What makes Meru to be confusing is the existence of very old buildings within the town centre.
Nice💯💯💯
Kenya is beautiful the only big problem we have is corruption.corruption is too much
I have gone through all the comments... I see people complaining mostly about Kakamega and Kericho. Remember Afrikan Traveller said according to him. Also I remember the rain disrupted him in Kericho and probably missed some parts of Meru. There are towns such as Narok, Bungoma, Kitale which are expansive too. Plus these videos take time and are expensive to make. We should politely request a review and encourage instead of bashing. Also like and subscribe and share and let adverts run
👏👏👏
If they see other rankings on YT they'll appreciate his work.
Machakos hasn't gotten the credit it deserves and doesn't suit 10th place. It's way more organized than many of the ones mentioned before it. Way above
Amazing view. Great job 🙏.
Perhaps a video about fastest-growing towns in Kenya would be a treat too. Kudos👍
Kisii 🔥.
Meru is vast but the terrain lets it down. Also, the vegetation covers it up. Mt Kenya forest is also on the edge of town thus harboring the town's continuous growth. In this case, the town is made up of distinct portions.
But it can strech up to the othersides...infact that mt kenya forest give Meru town a green look not like Naivasha where it lack that...
@@tom32575 True, the town will grow beyond the forest and extend towards Isiolo.

Apart from the top 3,let's first define and establish the parameters to use in ranking ie road infrastructure and general accessibility, airports, availability and access of financial services, real estate, availability of tertiary institutions, industries, population, human and settlement planning etc
Kisii was overwhelmed during 07 election due it's peacefulness, it attracted Kenyans from all regions who massively headed there to invest, the local govt couldn't even keep up with them, that's why it's poorly planned. It really deserves N°6 and could beat others before it, if it were not for disorganized local govt.

Kakamega has the best road net work in Kenya. Those narrow roads in Kisii can not be near Kakamega at all. Kakamega has Bukhungu stadium which hosted cecafa senior challenge in 2017.
