You need it if ur singing live. Non-musicians always think it's cheating or they're being fake on the recorded version, but singing live on a stage is so much harder than singing in a studio. First of all, the lights make the stage hotter than you could ever imagine, which makes it harder to find a place to breath than if you're in a nice cool studio (or living room in AJR's case 😜). Second, it's harder to stay on pitch live. And lastly you're constantly moving and jumping around, which also makes you run out of breath. So don't judge until you go up there and sing without a backing track.
@@MICKYCOfficial I'd also say with this song in particular it has layered vocals that just couldn't be replicated live unless someone has figured out how to clone jack. During the transition from Weak to 2085's second half; Jack's voice does actually give out and have to skip a lyric, there wasn't a pre-recorded jack in the background, the lyric just had to be skipped. Like you said all the jumping and moving would significantly lower the length between breaths so having the occasional line that is say in a significantly higher pitch that would be harder to switch to on the fly or have significant effects applied be pre-recorded gives them time to catch a breath without risking breathing into the microphone.
AJR is going on tour in 2024!! You can find dates and VIP info here: ajrbrothers.com
This song is beyond anything my ears can comprehend. 2000s R&B fading into an Irish drinking song. Simply magic.
Easily their best song
Way Less Sad, I Won't, Yes I'm A Mess, and Weak all come close to it though.

2:45 was beautiful

I don’t want to say it, but he sings the chorus along with the soundtrack
His voice has been blown out for a few days, so that’s probably why in this case
yeah, it’s a backing track. every artist does that.
