  • In May of 2016 while attending the Great Lakes Dragway Olympics of Drag Racing in Union Grove Wisconsin Don Garlits cackles Swamp Rat 13. This is the slingshot dragster that claimed half his right foot in 1970 when the transmission exploded on the starting line at the famed Lions Dragstrip.

Not a nicer man standing. As a young buck just enlisted in the USAF, I got stationed at Castle AFB, Ca., from the back woods of Georgia. I went to the Pamona race my first year there, and met him. He was also in the US Army, and we really had a great little conversation, with all kinds of folks trying to get to him. His wife Pat continued our talk, when he finally had to go. I was awestruck that they were so welcoming and nice to me. The next year, I was still stationed there, and took along a few of my buddies to see the nationals again. We were touring the pits when I saw his pit, and said to my friends, "Let's go check Garlits out". As we got near him, he looked out and actually remembered me, and waved me and my friends into the pit with him. Were all treated like family, and each of us came away with armloads of gifts and lifetimes of memories. I for one, have never forgotten that, and never will. The year was 1984, then 1985. A top notch man, racer, and family.

    Hey, “Big”....
I was at Lions drag strip on March 8, 1970… I was almost 8 years old.
My family and I left almost immediately.
I also viewed SR-13 at your museum in Ocala.... I lost it.
After viewing this clip and watching you, the crew and Lisa, cackle this monster.... I lost it again.
It was that accident that changed the sport as we know it.
Thank you for not giving up on SR-14, or yourself.
It has saved a lot of lives.
As you already know, God had (and still does)… A special plan for you.
    We love you.

BIG is the man. In 1968 at N.Y. National Speedway he was nice enough to take a picture with me. I still have that on the wall.😁👍

I wonder how much nitro was used on those engines of the day. Don is and always will be the man as far as fuel drafters are concerned for me.

Spent a lot of Saturdays and Sundays back as 7-10 yr.old with my dad at dragway 42 until we moved out west in 1970....no longer a two dragstrips in facility and I guess they reconfigured it to where they run the track in the opposite direction now

@@halseyknox at 42 i remember at the start of race day a guy would ride a bicycle down the track backwards either he sat backwards or the bike was built to go backwards they kept it near the starting line all the time i remember the year they built what we called the practice track where you could test your car

That's a big famous picture of Big Daddy flipping over the motor the blower motor and his roll cage if there's tranny blew up and he lost his toes that's when he invented the backwards dragster and ever since then there's been nothing but facts we're dresses the safety reasons all
