Hello Sarita Historical estimate means to decide the value of a work based on its historical importance. Dryden and Pope have written excellent PROSE works. Poetry didnt reach to those standards. Still these poems are of a significant period in english literature (neo classical period). So we tend to assign high value to it. When we are evaluating their poetry based on the importance it has in history (neoclassical poems) that is a historical estimate. It is not based on a real estimate.
I have a question , if i only have to write about the high standards of poetry by arnold do i need to mention about the writers with 3 estimates, touchstone method , imitation.
The estimates and touchstone method are used to ANALYSE poems. If the question is about poetry, its enough to write about that. You can include Aristotle's idea of poetry, how Arnold agrees to that, about Arnold s stand on French poetry and how he classifies writers into classics and non classics ( its all based on his idea of high standard poetry). I would still suggest that you discuss it with your professor😊
