wow I was going to suggest try fixing a camera as I had bought a Canon Powershot sx710 hs a few months back off ebay £50 including postage, It was described as having a lens issue, selling on behalf of this persons dad, turns out once I opened it, it rattled and then I knew it was far worse than I had expected, I stripped it down using a youtube video to find a very delicate part inside the lens was broken to bits and impossible to mend (I did try) so ordered a new lens off Aliexpress for roughly 14 pounds more than the camera cost, waited a month or so and got it working perfect in the end, glad to see you have a go now.
Advice: The lens unit has some sensors that measure the position of the inner rings, and focus lens support. The synchronization is crucial. You can find gears in Cd-ROM units that can be used with some small modifications. The hardest to fix compact camera fixed by me is Nikon S series. S2100, S210 S300, S2700. To most reliable are Panasonic Lumix Series. Oh... be careful with the capacitor. Trust me. We can talk via Skype if you need some help on cameras. Thank you for sharing another great video.
I've bought several cameras like this where the lens stops retracting or extending. It's nearly always due to grit or sand between the tubes or the lens. Just take a single sheet of paper, wet it slightly with some IPA, and slide it into the gap between the tubes, moving it all the way around while holding the camera upside down. Whatever's in there usually gets dislodged, falls out, and the lens works again.
I just purchased a Sony W800 from KEH and the lens wont retracting properly so I am getting the turn on and off error message. Do you think your method would work to fix it? Also, what is IPA?
My mate Vince you inspired me I took the liberty of trying to fix the 12th doctor sonic screwdriver toy as the problem was that the stone was no sound because the chase mode had been out the speaker looking for several pairs of earphones I finally got the right size of speaker so now it's working fantastic it took me 12 attempts to get right and over a month to do it please keep the videos coming thanks
My Mate VINCE thanks glad you responded to my comment and if u need the controller to work properly I would like to recRecommend that you are to take the plastic off and as you had took the wiper off from the faulty joystick I would recommend you turn it aroundThe wiper the opposite way see if that works if it doesn’t then try switching your Y axis out to a different one because mine had a similar problem
Hi Vince, an idea for when you purchase something on eBay is to print out the listing details and keep them in a folder. As packages arrive just tape the printout to the item that way all the details are on the item whenever you get to them. For added convenience you can also add notes to the printout like "Needs batteries/charger". I have ADHD and this process has been a game changer for my tinker projects and organisation. Thought it might be helpful for other busy minds. 👍
I guess im randomly asking but does anybody know a tool to get back into an Instagram account?? I somehow forgot my password. I love any tricks you can offer me.
@Cain Connor Thanks for your reply. I found the site through google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I think that this camera deserves to be featured in at least one future video's recording for the sake of it! Interesting video, I've never had to look in a camera before and I guess moving the lens enough times with cleanings just did the trick. Entertaing video. Very well, have a good one Vince.
I LOVE this, the intelligence, dedication, & craft - & nice antidote to the too common 'throw away society' mentality! Tho' I feel sorry for the ebay seller, who might've been waiting for feedback on what they sold-!
If you're looking at images on a computer or a phone you can most certainly appreciate every last extra megapixel. Because you can zoom in and see clear detail still.
Yes, and 20.1 megapixels are waaay higher than even the latest “enthusiast”-quality smartphones (including iPhone XR and Samsung Galaxy S10+). EDIT: That said, they do have an insanely high resolution for their size, as the image sensor is pretty much pea-sized 🤯.
@@Operational117 There are definitly phones that beat 20MP, but it's uncommon to see them, because most people who cares about camera quality have dedicated ones. So the main stream phones tend to not put any more production costs on cameras. As for myself I would very much like a phone like the Huawei P20 Pro with the AI chip for dark images but I just can't stand the stupid NOTCH. Still stuck at my Nexus 6.
Awesome fix again Vince probably the camera was dropped and landed on the lens while it was extended causing the initial damage to that gear and partially seizing the mechanism, very nice camera in the end!
Here is a tip: What i used to do, take a thin paper and run them through those surrounding layers of the lens part that comes out, there are 3 layes and sand gets stuck in 3 of these layers or dust and you get the problem when it cannot open, even a case where the gear breaks.
That was a really nice job fixing that camera 📷 and those are nice camera's too and I enjoyed seeing you get the means working again nice job all around rock on Vince🤘🤘🎸🎸
I've gotten 4 parts or not working cameras on ebay and 2 of them were missing the original batteries but worked fine with no issues except minor cosmetic problems. The other 2 cameras were trickier..one had a broken sd card slot and the other one had a lens problem that wasn't fixable so used both cameras to make one working one..3 out of 4 isn't too bad..
In each video you mention that a package was collecting dust for a year or so... I fear to imagine what your closet/garage looks like. Probably like stepping into a post office :D
12:45 If you remove the rectangular tinted glass/filter from the lens assembly in your right hand, you'll have an infrared camera. DIY infrared camera conversions - people pay money to have that done! Of course, it's usually a permanent, one-way operation. :)
I would say a well good job. You got a very nice camera. 20 MP is very nice too. It nice to have a spare camera or 2. Once you realize how good the camera is, like 720 HD picture, recorded with HQ sound, and panorama it a real good gem.
Great Job looks like a good camera now it's working. it's like new now it's all cleaned up must have been jammed like you said possible with sand which damaged the cog. Nice one looking forward to seeing your next.
A nice idea with this camera is to remove the small sort of red glass in front of the image sensor. This small glass is the IR filter, without it the camera will record ir from ir leds(like your tv remote). I’ve done this as well and made a small ir emitter light underneath the camera. So i basicaly made a night view camera. It is quite funny to see something on the camera screen while you dont see it in real life.
The higher the megapixels the sharper the image. If you take the same photo with both the 8MP camera and the 20MP camera it should look crisper on the 20MP camera, but that also comes down to the post processing as well. The post processing applies effects and tries to make out of focus objects, in focus. That's why people have taken photos and have orbs in the image and think it's ghosts. In reality there was a speck of dust floating in the air. Although the person can't see it with the naked eye the camera does see it and the post processing tries to bring it into focus, which results in it showing a orb. Post processing is a automatic software function that happens within milliseconds, hence whether you are using the camera function or shooting video(if the camera shoots video clips) post processing is still applied.
The need for more pixels has a real explanation: color fidelity. The CCD sensors have in reality a very poor color quality, if you see a raw image zoomed in as it's taken by the camera you will notice a lot the color discrepance in each pixel, some will look more redish, others bluish and others greenish. When you reduce the image size, the more pixels you have, the less that error matters, that errors are "diluted" statistically as you blend a bigger amount of "camera pixels" for each "image pixel" :=)
CCD? I don't think a run of the mill camera would employ really expensive CCD Sensors, I honestly thought most NON Professional Digital camera's if not all camera's now are all based upon the inexpensive CMOS sensor chips? But then it's been near to a decade since I delved into Digital Camera's and the old CCD's may have significantly dropped in price and perhaps even been refined to be much more responsive that the Cmos sensors..
@@KorAllRBare Nowadays the most common sensor is the CCD, it's cost has been reduced a lot. That exact model uses the Super HAD CCD. www.sony.com/electronics/cyber-shot-compact-cameras/dsc-w800 And with the CMOS it would be the same but worse, CMOS has a lot more color error than CCD :)
Hi Vince you can use Sony cyber shot camera as a daily driver we got one of these Sony cameras we use them as a photography group camera at my work place and its reliable can't beats Sony's products for reliability
For repairing gears, your best bet is to pin it. Drill a small hole into each part, then put a bit of glue into the hole. After that spray some accelerant onto the metal pin, then put the pin in the hole. Repeat for the other part and you should have a decently strong repair.
Awesome you got it working ..I remember the Kodak digital camera is having that issue .. I repaired a Canon D7 so many parts won’t be taking any canons apart anytime soon 🤣
Questions: Whats the voltage i need to apply to the lens motor in order to test it? How do i do the conections to turn the camera on?( there are 4 pins, “+” “T” “-“ and “C” )
Vince... I'm a little nervous that some salt "well - We can only hope it's salt" may still be embedded within the lens, Yes you managed to dislodge it, but I am wondering as to where it may have ended up? "Hopefully stuck permanently to some grease." Meh!.. I guess if it ever dislodges and ends up jamming up on you, A good sonic clean should finally dislodge whatever it is for good..
For the gear thing, I was thinking you could do a silicon mould of the gear then do a positive with a hardening resin. Could work as a fix next time. Plastic gears really are a two state devise: either it's perfect or broken, no fix.
I thought that too - just make some silivone putty (search YT), push the good side into it to make the mould then fill the correct tooth-hole with epoxy and rotate around to mould on a new tooth.
Great job, well done Vince. I’ll be glad when you finish those damn controllers and get back to stuff like this 🤞and thanks for the reply on my last post as I’m now the proud owner of my own blue mat 🙂
Yay, brabo Vince! I'm so glad you did this as I have a Canon PowerShot G11 with a stuck lens and I've been putting off having a go. Now I've seen your video, I'm inspired to have a go. I expect it will be a broken gear, but I can always troll Ebay for a spares one. I'm pretty sure it is full of sand :) It cost me £400 originally and has been a very good camera for its size, so I'd like to get it working again. Cheers.
Very cool how at 7:57 the little spring from the battery retention clip just jumps out into the tray...Im sure it wasn't intentional..Was it Vince?..lol
If you watch the lens it rotates when you zoom in-out, if it is stuck turn off the power and manually rotate the lens, It’s best to rotate all the way out then all the way back in. Fixed a sony cyber-shot HX-60 using this method, I think the method was squirrelled away on the Sony website
Hey Vince! I've been watching you for a while, and color me inspired, but I've just bought a SMD rework station from amazon! It's a digital heat gun/soldering iron combo, and a set of helping hands with a powerful magnifying glass. Also seen a bunch of promise from some small chinese brand magnifying glass (with HDMI output as well) and I also found a job lot of iPod touches and classics for about 15 bucks. Wish me luck! haha :P
My Nikon did this after dropping it at the beach and it turned out the small grains of sand were jamming the lens mechanism the compressed air and a tear down of the mechanism did the trick
I used your tutorial and I found that all the gears are fine, now I can hear the motor trying to retract the lens but it's still not working ! Also, I have the following issues : 1) The long gear at 15:40 poped out when I opened the lens and now I don't know where it used to be (maybe that's why the lens is not retracting) 2) The screen is stuck (shows Sony Cyber-shot) and nothing hapens Please help...
The best camera you can possibly have is the one you have with you :) That kinda works for phones it's the only reason i buy the flagship phones, but i don't do it every year more like every 3-4. P20 Pro at the moment, blown away by the camera for holiday snaps and extra bonus i don't need to share on instagram the Chinese government are already sharing all my pics ;) Oh edit Is it Sony Magic Stick or Duo or whatever if so i have a couple kicking around you can have rather than buying some.
Its a good phone the P20 but its not on par with sony, nikon or canons dedicated kit in terms of quality at longer distance as they have way bigger sensors than camera phones and optical zoom which camera phones dont as they dont have room for it.
@@Tim_3100 Oh no i would never suggest it is as good as a dedicated camera i was more aiming at my first sentence in that i always have it with me. It's great to have a high end DLSR (or even a good quality compact) but you don't take it with you everywhere, your phone you do and they are now better than "good enough" and i expect would give this 5mp Sony a run for it's money in some circumstances.
in working with this camera at my job, I've noticed that there is an attachment on all of the lenses, inside the barrel. It looks like an ND filter attachment and covers the aperture like one when lights are shined directly through the lens. We've looked at the user manuals and cannot find any information about that piece. Do you know anything about it?
Agreed, glue just doesnt work properly under such a small surface area. But since the other cam was definitely dead for good, and I do not believe Vince has the tools to do this, the outcome was very nice for what he had!
I cant even imagine trying to design a mechanism like that lens. All the little gears guides... Its so tiny and complex. To think it all ends up in a £60 camera that is designed to throw away after 3 years.
When you’re doing the camera lens and the image sensor (the thing you defined was “doing the image”), it is critical to keep dust at a minimum! The camera production line requires so-called “dust-free rooms” when assembling the camera lens (there are a bunch of additional lenses inside the “box” that further bend the light (before reaching the image sensor), and if they get even a tiny amount of dust during production, they have to either disassemble the “box”, or scrap it). The same “dust-free rooms” are especially used when making the lenses themselves, as they grind and polish the lenses to precise specifications. If even a tiny dust settles, it could ruin the lens. So... please be thorough when dedusting after opening a camera lens “box”. And NEVER open the inner assembly (unless the lens is already useless as is... I’m looking at the water-damaged camera’s lens “box” 😏).
i use cameras and video cameras that i found in storage units to do all my online listings and i had to disassemble them blow some air through them and i have never had an issue and if I drop a camera or something happens to it i am not having babies because i haven't got a camera for my online stuff, I use a Sony cyber shot camera and a nikon camera and i also have a video camera i use all sourced from lockers or pallets i have bought so they didn't cost me anything because i more then made enough money to cover their costs with the other items. Its also allowed me to have a different set of cameras I have one set for photographing things I am selling and shooting short videos about the products I am selling and i have a different slightly more sophisticated setup for making videos and content and the only thing i paid for was an external hard drive to keep the videos on if i am out and about, sometimes i shoot 5-6 videos in a session and in between each one i transfer the data from the SD card to the external HDD. Ironically enough I bought a external HDD and was all pleased with myself and found 3 of them in a pallet a week later and ended up selling the one i bought just a week later after i bought it because the three i found were bigger capacity then the one i bought.
Harsh to call them a nasty seller! I pick up these kind of cameras all the time from car boots/auctions and if they don't work i sell them as parts, not worth the time opening them up to find the faults. Only worth doing the very basic checks from the sellers POV, sell the batteries and chargers separately and make as much as they can of it
So I Have the same camera 2 years ago I was messing around with it like a dslr camera and then I truned the lens the opposite way and then on my camera has this problem that it zooms when I don’t want it and today it just stopped working
+My Mate VINCE, You could always try casting the broken gear in a two-part Epoxy resin. Being that all of the gear teeth are evenly spaced, as soon as it's partially dried, you could rotate the gear on a pin, one further tooth. This would reproduce your broken gear tooth.ruclips.net/video/hZdzGbnBpk0/видео.html
@Shambles1980TRealOne I plug POS first cus ground is everywhere meaning when. U trying to plug in the positive terminal it won't accidentally touch ground cus it's everywhere
I know I'm late to the party and differing opinions have already been posted but I just can't resist. Is 20 megapixels better than.8 megapixels? Well, it depends. There's a phenomenon known as the megapixel myth, which has been banded about for years. The idea is that camera manufacturers heavily advertise the number of megapixels of their products to try to 'fool' the average consumer into believing that more is automatically better. In reality, the number of megapixels is /one of/ of the elements of picture quality, but not the only one. Dynamic range, colour reproduction and all kinds of other things are equally as important as the number of megapixels. Having said that, if you had two identical cameras, with two identical lenses yet somehow one of the cameras sensors was 8MP and the other was 20MP, you'd get the better pictures out of the latter. It /would/ make a difference in that highly hypothetical scenario, assuming that the lenses themselves were sharp enough to take advantage of the increased resolution. In reality, of course, you can't get identical sensors with differing megapixel counts but you get the gist. Give me a ten year old full-frame 13MP DSLR over a modern 30MP point and shoot any day.

Haha..I noticed that when watching the video back. I didn't even notice the spring while tearing it down but it knew exactly where to go :-)
Usually when one of these telescopic lenses is sticky like this, it means there's a bit of grit stuck in one of the gears.
If you watch the lens it rotates when you zoom in-out, if it is stuck turn off the power and manually rotate the lens, It’s best to rotate all the way out then all the way back in. Fixed a sony cyber-shot HX-60 using this method, I think the method was squirrelled away on the Sony website
Sand is the bane of all electronics... almost silly to think of since that's what PCB boards are made from!
I was cringing when you were forcing the lens in and I could see the new cog breaking too. Take all the cogs out and then push it back in?
The option to have more megapixels is that you can take a picture quickly then you can edit the part you want out of the original
It may be interesting to buy a good $450 3d printer to print the plastic parts ;)
Wish me luck! haha :P
Hey, good luck Corey, hope it goes well for you :-)
Man this sounds great, do you have a link?
Nice video with a nice result! :)
Fantastic job
Thanks mate :-)
My Nikon did this after dropping it at the beach and it turned out the small grains of sand were jamming the lens mechanism the compressed air and a tear down of the mechanism did the trick
This is what I was thinking while watching and was saying it loud 'There's sand in there, Vince!' 😄
gorilla super glue is really good stuff only need a tiny bit i even used it for a window hinge
I used your tutorial and I found that all the gears are fine, now I can hear the motor trying to retract the lens but it's still not working !
Also, I have the following issues :
1) The long gear at 15:40 poped out when I opened the lens and now I don't know where it used to be (maybe that's why the lens is not retracting)
2) The screen is stuck (shows Sony Cyber-shot) and nothing hapens
Please help...
Love the vidz Vince, keep 'em coming 👍
The best camera you can possibly have is the one you have with you :)
That kinda works for phones it's the only reason i buy the flagship phones, but i don't do it every year more like every 3-4. P20 Pro at the moment, blown away by the camera for holiday snaps and extra bonus i don't need to share on instagram the Chinese government are already sharing all my pics ;)
Oh edit Is it Sony Magic Stick or Duo or whatever if so i have a couple kicking around you can have rather than buying some.
Report the seller warn others ...great vid
Nice video; As always.
in working with this camera at my job, I've noticed that there is an attachment on all of the lenses, inside the barrel. It looks like an ND filter attachment and covers the aperture like one when lights are shined directly through the lens. We've looked at the user manuals and cannot find any information about that piece. Do you know anything about it?
Good fix
To fix the gear I would have tacked back on the broken part with my micro pencil and plastic welded it kinda
Agreed, glue just doesnt work properly under such a small surface area.
But since the other cam was definitely dead for good, and I do not believe Vince has the tools to do this, the outcome was very nice for what he had!
what is the mini laptop you're using?
I cant even imagine trying to design a mechanism like that lens. All the little gears guides... Its so tiny and complex. To think it all ends up in a £60 camera that is designed to throw away after 3 years.
don't forget that you can use the camera as a video camera.
W stands for wide and T stands for telephoto (zoom)
I’m looking at the water-damaged camera’s lens “box” 😏).
trust me pictures with 20M are worth to be put on the wall, youll love whatever you photographed with it
Nice fix
i use cameras and video cameras that i found in storage units to do all my online listings and i had to disassemble them blow some air through them and i have never had an issue and if I drop a camera or something happens to it i am not having babies because i haven't got a camera for my online stuff, I use a Sony cyber shot camera and a nikon camera and i also have a video camera i use all sourced from lockers or pallets i have bought so they didn't cost me anything because i more then made enough money to cover their costs with the other items.
Combine two semi broken same model cameras into one working one. Less stuff in the landfill eh?
Do you think a small 3d printer would help you with broken plastic gears it's such a nightmare to replace why????
Vince we want more Xbox controllers videos. There is a massive group asking for this :)
Hi, I filmed and edited the 5th one today. I will get it live tomorrow :-)
Impressive!
Wah... 20MP... my 1st Cybershot only 2MP.
Bro please make a video on sony dsc s980 on lens dissamble.
Hear the depression set in when he realises there are no batteries.
I'd just buy the chargers or whatever from Amazon and if I find it's not fixable I just send back the extra bits!
Harsh to call them a nasty seller! I pick up these kind of cameras all the time from car boots/auctions and if they don't work i sell them as parts, not worth the time opening them up to find the faults. Only worth doing the very basic checks from the sellers POV, sell the batteries and chargers separately and make as much as they can of it
That's awesome 😊
Definition of insanity:
Trying the same things under the same conditions over and over and expecting a different outcome.
But it must work for Vince 👌
@Dillon Sykes much like your grasp of the implied humour in this post
@Dillon Sykes oooooooo looks like I hit a nerve. Triggered much???
@Dillon Sykes thanks man. Appreciate it👍
Love you too
Kiss kiss 😘😘
So I Have the same camera 2 years ago I was messing around with it like a dslr camera and then I truned the lens the opposite way and then on my camera has this problem that it zooms when I don’t want it and today it just stopped working
W is Wideangle, T is Telephoto!
i got one for 7 pounds in Mexico, it was in perfect shape inside a plastic bag, the seller didnt even know that it was working, i did
+My Mate VINCE, You could always try casting the broken gear in a two-part Epoxy resin. Being that all of the gear teeth are evenly spaced, as soon as it's partially dried, you could rotate the gear on a pin, one further tooth. This would reproduce your broken gear tooth.ruclips.net/video/hZdzGbnBpk0/видео.html
always plug positive first and unplug it second
@Shambles1980TRealOne I plug POS first cus ground is everywhere meaning when. U trying to plug in the positive terminal it won't accidentally touch ground cus it's everywhere
But if your way is then it's right but I wouldn't do that
What a weird noise at 11:29
15:10 it’s a tooth
Oh, no controllers this time??? Hahaha
