Virology Lectures 2023 #23: A tale of two pandemics
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 17 ноя 2024
- In 2023 there are two ongoing pandemics: AIDS and COVID-19. In this lecture, we discuss the zoonotic origins of the two viruses, the pathogenesis of infection, and available vaccines and therapeutics.

- Who Am I? -
I’m Vincent Racaniello, Earth’s Virology Professor.
I’m also a professor of virology at Columbia University in New York. I’ve been doing research on viruses since 1976, and teaching virology in classrooms and online since 1999. On this RUclips channel I share videos of my lectures, podcasts, and more.
New videos are uploaded several times each week.
I do not run ads on our work as it is disruptive to learning. We depend on your support.

It’s wonderful that you put these lectures online for everyone. Much appreciated
You never disappoint. Thank you.
good for you, I guess...
I was disappointed long time ago
Another useful and interesting lecture. Vincent, have you ever considered a mini-course on how to interpret medical journal articles for those of us who are not scientists?
A good idea. In the meantime: -
1) Read the paper, start with the figures.
2) Read the supplementary material.
3) Read the references (or at least some of them).
The SARS-COV2 portion was interesting, keep trying to fight misinformation. The HIV overview was fascinating. Despite having grown up with it in our lives there's so much that we still don't know, as a general populace, and it's vastly overshadowed by newer pandemics. Listening, I couldn't help but remember those who HIV took from us too early, friends and colleagues. Someone I worked with who developed dementia in her 30s; a friend whose looks were so important was covered in sporadic sarcomae; the decline and eventual death of all these people over a span of years - and that weighs heavily on them - and us.
We owe so much to the researchers who developed our current treatment regimes, and have given us a future.
Lensgrinder Antonie van Leeuwenhoek was born in Delft
Nicely done!
I found this informative and very interesting.
Prof said CoV not engineered because 12,000 base pairs difference is about 12 years of evolution. @1:11:35
But, prof previously mentioned that CoV can mutate much faster if one changes a few base pairs.
So one could make a fast-evolving CoV, evolve the virus a few generations until a virus with the desired property emerges, then simply revert the fast-evolving base-pair changes back to normal.
Prof. Racaniello - what will happen if/when an HIV virus develops receptors to invade germline cells? How likely is that and how would virologists respond?
Who else doesn't this year's virology music to finish haha
I can understand why people might consider it a possibility that evolution of SARS 2 could lead to increased transmissibility while we've been watching while flu has not, specifically that it's new and it could have had to adapt to humans after the shift in hosts
The ivory tower privilege to have access to a rationally functional health care system while talking about lack of health care takes irony to a new level.
46:35- Damn it, it's only ~1000 atom across, soo small to prevent or kill it.
21:00 Is your genetic clock not confounded by the possibility of a mass vaccination campaign, which could speed up the rate of mutations enormously?
54:20 Van Leeuwenhoek was Dutch- ChatGPT.
16:00 Have we proven that the candidate SIVs were in none of the 600 chimps that were delivered to the Lindi camp near Stanleyville for Koprowski's experiments? In science, your identification of the locale of outbreak should factor in the wild-life trade in Africa, which may be a confounder...
Someone better tell Vincent he was right all along.
Von Leeuwenhoek was Dutch.
Unless he misspoke in the lecture.
Both pandemics were about low immunity caused by life style.
No
@@personzorz Please explain.
@@laurier3348 HIV is about an insidious virus that destroys the immune system no matter how healthy you are. COVID is about the population being exposed to an ordinary respiratory virus for the first time as adults rather than having memory from childhood.
The nearest WIV facility to the infamous wet market in Wuhan is less than 200 yards away, on the same side of the river, and close enough for employees to go there for lunch or after work to pick up food. But, that market is not ground zero, as roughly 1/3 of the first 20 documented cases had no connection to that market directly or indirectly. Furthermore, there is some evidence of the virus being in circulation as early as October of 2019, in sewage in France, and in a handful of cases including several workers from the WIV being admitted to hospital at once for a respiratory illness. The French government officially warned the CIA and State Department about their concerns that the CCP was substantially redesigning the lab that they had designed and partially funded at WIV, to include a vivarium. They also documented fundamental systemic safety protocol violations that would compromise the design intention of the facility, and risk loss of containment of any microbe being worked with.
The detection of SARS CoV-2 prior to October is highly dubious and cannot be relied upon, either in France or in Barcelona in March 2019, as they both used a high Ct. Contamination is now thought to account for those signals. Your 'analysis' does not account for the presence of strains A and B found in the environmental samples from Jan 2020, which suggest 2 strains jumped to humans a few weeks apart at the Market. Ultimately we will never know with certainty where the virus came from, but I think the preponderance of evidence, and not speculation, points to the wet market.
@@Costa_Conn No. There were no horse shoe bats or pangolins at that market, thus no natural zoonotic vector.
Again, a significant minority of the first 20 diagnosed cases in Wuhan had no direct or indirect relationship to the wet market. The wet market therefore cannot have been ground zero.
Additionally, despite the CCP claiming to have expended over 18 months and vast sums of money searching for a host animal species for the virus, none has been discovered.
It is very convenient to point to the wet market as the site was scrubbed clean before the CCP ever admitted that there was an outbreak, and before they shared their preposterous zoonotic origin cover story with a wet market as the original transmission site.
Ultimately, we will never be able to reject the lab leak hypothesis because the WIV has never permitted an inspection by a third party, they have disappeared their top staff from that time period, and the WIV is now officially a military facility.
The CCP would not even permit virologists and scientists from abroad to enter Wuhan for many months. They were only permitted to visit Beijing.
The NIH continues to fund gain of function research at the WIV to this day.
Your claim about two strains being detected a few weeks apart is irrelevant. If the WIV and it's contracted vivisection facilities were leaky, as the photographic evidence indicates, and as the alarm sounded by the French also indicates, then it is not a stretch to imagine a scenario in which two strains leaked from the WIV a couple of weeks apart. The facilities were not being operated to standard.
No PCR test data can be relied upon. The cycle count is usually concealed and routinely manipulated. These are not useful diagnostic tools by themselves.
The wet market story does not comport with the evidence. The lab leak hypothesis cannot be discounted. It is the most likely scenario by far; unless you contend that the US military transmitted it to Chinese athletes at the World Games in October, 2019. This is another scenario promoted by the CCP.
Are you implying that Republicans helped spread a Chinese biological attack against the world?
