- The Ansel Adams Wilderness in the Inyo National Forest contains some of the most beautiful scenery in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Recently, I went on a three-day backpacking trip in the Wilderness with Mike “Marmalade” Lawrence.
This video chronicles my journey with views of crystal lakes, snow-covered mountain spires, meandering rivers, cascading waterfalls and various native wildlife.

Great video, I'm a 52 year old Beginning backpacker, and I'll definitely think about getting my feet wet with this hike. Thank you
You’ll enjoy it Stephen. 😁
Milkman here. Pleasure meeting you out there! Really appreciated the company and convos. Best of luck on all your adventures!
Hey Milkman! It was great to meet you and hike with you.
AWesome
Thanks. Yes, Awesome.😁
I simply can hardly wait to get there! Best production yet in my opinion. Reverend, see you down the trail!
Thanks David.
I hiked that trail on my way to Yosemite Valley 2 times back in the 80's. I especially remember the first trip when we finally reached the outlet of T.I. Lake as it was the most beautiful scene I had ever laid eyes on. Now i can only relive it watching videos like yours......thanks!
That’s the best way to relive it. 😁
I'd still be hiking today were it not for spinal fusion and knee problems. Are you still hiking?? Never give it up if you can because once you stop it's all down hill.@@TheHikingRev
Spectacular! Great videography and music. It would be great to be a Park Ranger there.
Thanks Mark.
Great job my friend, really well done and I like that our videos came out different. It was an honor and a privilege to hike with you and share my favorite loop with you.
Thank you. I thoroughly enjoyed hiking with you. It was absolutely breathtaking.
REV! You done outdid yourself on this stunningly gorgeous video! Great filming!! Almost like being there. Thank you SO much!!!
You’re welcome Cynthia. I’m so glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for this great video of a great trek. Clearly, I need to get to the Ansel Adams Wilderness. That was some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen. Again, Thanks!
You’re welcome. It would be well worth the effort.
That’s the best video! Thanks for the adventure.
You’re welcome Tom.
Wonderful video. I really enjoy your adventures. You show us how to have fun at any age. Thank you!
You’re welcome Laurie.
Thanks for sharing your journey with us!
You’re welcome Mike. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Such beautiful scenery
Thanks Bill.
Absolutely beautiful!! Bought myself an LG 86” cheapie at Costco to watch amazing videos like yours. Your backpacking adventures look amazing on it. Thanks for sharing - know it’s not easy filming them.
Hey Bob. You’re right it’s not easy filming my adventures. A lot of walking back for the camera. But as long as I know that you enjoy watching them it makes it worthwhile.😁
Thanks for coming back for your camera! Otherwise I (we) could not have taken this hike with you. Happy 4th of July!
Thanks Curtis. Marmalade is the one who usually went back for the camera.
It is indeed so beautiful
Yes it is.
such a breathtaking scenery!!!
Yes it is.
Backpacked this spectacular area in the early 80’s. However, no music needed. I much prefer to hear nature’s sound. The music, though beautiful, was distracting and a bit irritating as I wanted to hear the wind, water and birds. Fascinated by your tiny backpacks. Going to search your RUclips channel to hopefully see a video tour of your pack; what you brought and how you packed it. Thanks for bringing us along on your adventure. 🤩
You’re quite welcome. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Enjoyed your video, what a beautiful trip. I appreciate all of your camera work to share this with everyone.
Thanks Ruth. I’m glad you enjoyed it. 😁
I realized that you are originally from Mobile! I’m originally from Fairhope! Small world. My hubby and I will be watching more of your videos so thanks for sharing them. Take care!
@@bountifuladventures I love Fairhope. Been there many times. 😁
All I can say is WOW!!! The scenery is Beautiful. Thank you for sharing with us.
Around every corner there was beauty.
Beautiful, beautiful trail! Thank you for taking us along!❤️
You’re welcome Vivian.
Wow! Stunning vistas. No wonder Mr. Adams was so successful with landscapes like that.
So true, Charlie.
Undeniably beautiful country. Thank you so much.🦋❤
Yes. Beautiful. 😃
Thanks for sharing your trip...and thanks for all the extra work you did setting up your camera to share it so personally...It makes a difference. I enjoyed sharing this with my wife who hasn't yet seen all of that amazing country. I have seen it all and am looking forward to sharing it with her.
Thanks Matt. She’s going to love it. 😁
Sorry about scraping up the side of your ankle. ouch! Loved watching you cross the streams.
That was Marmalade. I almost fell in myself. The rocks were super slippery.
Beautiful. Thanks!👍🙂🙏
You’re welcome Dave.
Great footage, thanks for sharing!
we did this trip in 2020 minus the side trip up to Ediza. We had planned to keep going south on the JMT until possibly Reds Meadow, but we got hailed on approaching Shadow Lake, and lost our inspiration.
It can happen. But all-in-all, it’s a beautiful hike. 😁
Omw Rev! Dixie just mentioned and referred viewers to your channel.
Your channel and content is truly making a difference... 😊
Thank you Steph. I am truly honored. Dixie is one of my heroes.
@@TheHikingRev She's one of mine too... But yours... Oh yours are on a whole different level.
There's a peaceful quietness to it with bits of refreshing self-deprecating humor.
I'm. Hooked. 😊
Was just up in Red's Meadow last weekend hiking in Devil's Postpile with my kids. I really want to get up and hike in the lakes region up there. Thanks for this great video!
You’re welcome Matt. Beautiful hike!
These are the scenes I day dream about here at work during the winter
Ain’t that the truth. I’m daydreaming with you. 😁👍❤️
Love that country! Thank you for taking us along.
You’re welcome.
Stunning scenery. Absolutely no words really for all that beauty
So true.
Hope you go back someday and spend more time in there. I could’ve watched this for hrs. Thanks for posting amazing place!
Hey Dave. Yes, I’m definitely going to go back there again.
Amazing scenery, good video ✌
Thanks.
So beautiful! You are so fun to watch, the way you film, just beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing this treasure❤️
Thank you Joni. You’re very kind and encouraging.
Absolutely gorgeous.
Thank you Kim I agree 100%.
So very beautiful!
Thanks Connie.
I was looking at a hike from Mammoth through Donohue Pass down to Tuolumne. This may have talked me out of it. Have a few questions. Where did you park? At the trailhead? I'm looking at my map following what I think was your route. Ok. Now, the video. Fantastic. I love Yosemite. This video had some of the BEST views EVER. Thank you.
I hope you enjoyed it. I parked my car at the parking lot where you pick up the shuttle to go to Reds Meadows. There were cars parked at the trailhead (Reds Meadow). Good luck on your hike!
Nice video Mike. Wish I could have joined you two for this one. But duty calls here. Glad you’re doing better on the climbs!
Thanks. We would have loved to have had you join us.
@@TheHikingRev My wife and I did that loop except for the out and back to Ediza a few years ago and I definitely want to go back. I would also like to try going beyond Ediza to Iceberg Lake and Minaret Lake. So maybe we can plan an adventure together sometime in the next year.
@@Heretic10001 That sounds like a great trip.
Hey Rev, you are quite truly an inspiration
Writing from India here.
Wonderfully crafted episodes too.
Thank you so much. You’re very kind. That encourages me.
Beautiful photography, Rev. Thanks very much.
Thanks Marty. The Sierra Nevada‘s are definitely beautiful.
Wow wow wow! Beautiful videography! What a gorgeous place. I see you can still get in and out of your tent well. So can I and I feel so blessed to be able to do so. Keep it up.
Thanks Shirley. The old dude can still get out of the tent…for now.
Amazing video. The vistas - my God, aren't they mind blowing. I'm glad you included the gurgling noises of the streams. I dream of walking all these amazing trails that America has to offer. 💗💗 from India
Come on over. 😁
great video, spectacular views... and great footage there. Thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome.
Hiked from Red's Meadow to Yosemite Valley via JMT and agree THAT is some AWESOME trail. Highly recommend that section IF you can get a permit.
Unfortunately, we were under the remnants of hurricane Hillary for the section from Garnet Lake to just before Donohue Pass. Made for great photos but limited viewing of the Sierras for those two days.
Wow Jake. You got to do it again when it’s better weather. 😁
I'm going to put this hike on the list of to do hikes. I just started hiking and have yet to go backpacking. Thanks for the inspiration.
Ps I really like your last comment always going back for the camera. LOL.
Thanks Michael. It’s a pain to film but as long as people are encouraged, helped, inspired and entertained I’ll keep putting out videos.
Rev - your multimedia skills have improved dramatically since you started over three years ago. Keep up the travel logs.
Thanks Terry. I can’t you’ve been watching my videos for that long.
That was gorgeous! Thank you with all my heart!
You’re quite welcome Joybee.
Im gonna try this hike in a few weeks. Thanks
Beautiful trip!
Hey Rev, was great to meet you on the JMT, VVR to deer creek, terrific videos bravo sir!
Thanks Hendo! (Sorry about calling you Ian the whole time I was hiking with you. That’s what happens when you get old.) I hope your hike went well. Perhaps maybe our paths will cross some other time in the future. Cheers my friend!
@@TheHikingRev no worries, yeah l upped the pace nearer Yosemite and finished early to get out the smoke, incredible adventure and hope to revisit some of the shorter routes at more gentle pace, look forward to seeing your videos
Thank you for the beautiful video. I was there twice. Once in 1995 and it was a year of500 years snows, so in August everything was still melting, mosquitos were horrendous and some campsites were snowed in. We had to link arms to get across creeks. The next year was a normal year and we stepped across the same creeks. Beautiful in both years. Thanks for the memories.
You’re welcome Mary Jo.
Beautiful nature
Yes it is. It was a very beautiful trail.😁
Thanks for sharing the journey. Amazing views and great quality video.
You’re welcome Daniel.
I love that closing clip, did make me smile. Beautiful hike Rev, did you see many thru-hikers on this one? I'm following 4 and each of them always comment on 1,000 Island Lake. Beautiful with the snow high up but the Trail clear. Thanks for sharing.
Chris…I’m glad you enjoyed it. I did see a lot of Thruhikers. This is a great year!
Absolutely Beautiful! Stunning! Gods land for sure! Great Video, very well done, edited, music, content! Thank you for sharing such a beautiful area!!!!
You’re welcome Stephen.
Beautiful! The music is a perfect fit for that scenery! Thanks for sharing.
You’re welcome Ruth.😁❤️👍
Hey Rev! Good to see you and Marm out there! Nice work - such clear and vivid shots! 👍 Appreciate it!
Thanks Manny. I thoroughly enjoyed your videos. Got to get back on trail, if not this year, the next.
@@TheHikingRev Be back out there in a couple weeks! 👣👍
Beautiful! One day soon I will be out there. For now, I'm doing my first overnight trip tomorrow at Henry Coe. Just 7 miles round trip, solo. Will do some fishing too. Watching your PCT series got me into hiking 3 months ago. Been working hard to get in shape and make this first step. Thank you!!!!!!!
You’re welcome Mike. I trained for my PCT hike in Henry Coe…and went fishing. Great place!
How beautiful, absolutely stunning 😀
Yes it was Helen.
Beautiful Rev!
Thanks.
I saw this in stereo as I follow you both. Your perspectives compliment each other. Old guys rule.
Yes. Somebody’s got to stand up for the old dudes.
@@TheHikingRev you guys do a stand up job!🤣
I have no words to express my feelings when i just see all these landscapes on my small cell phone screen. A trekking of my dream! Sad to live on the opposite side of the planet:(.
There are probably some beautiful landscapes on your side of the planet. 😁
Beautiful!
Thanks Fred.
I’ve been watching him for over a year now! I’ve seen you on his blogs. But Dixie is the one who got me started watching you after her segment of hiking as you grow older. She referred to your channel.
Thanks Perry. That was very kind of Dixie.
Beautiful footage Rev! This loop has been on my list. So gorgeous. I need to get my butt in gear! Thanks for the inspiration. So great to see you two out getting after it!👏🌻💛
Thanks. This loop will not disappoint.
Hey, from New Zealand. Nice to see you fully recovered and back on trail again. May one ask how old you are now? I am 85 this year and still getting my share of mini adventures both on foot and on bike; a great beliver of "use it or loose it"
Wow…that is fantastic, Tony! I just turned 70, a few days ago (May20). I hope I can still move around at 85. You’re right…”use it or loose it.”😁
I know and understand what you mean about the videos and pictures don’t do it justice but you sure captured it, absolutely stunning! Thanks for sharing!
You’re welcome Rick. I hope you enjoyed it.
Awesome vid that i don't remember seeing. At 70 you get to see stuff for the first time more than once. 😂
Thanks Douglas.😂
It's great seeing you back on trail! This is a great hike with amazingly beautiful scenery. I'm jelly.
Sorry about your leg. Feel better soon.
That was Marmalade’s leg.
@@Heretic10001 Oh, sheesh!!!
Yes. It was great to do this hike. Yeah that was Marmalade who “bit the dust.”
Beautiful! God’s Masterpiece. Thanks for putting names on the lakes. Brought back lots of memories ❤️
Thanks Olga. It was a beautiful hike.
Beautiful footage of your journey! Stunningly beautiful! Thank you also for your how to hike series of videos as well. I am just starting my hiking adventures at 39 (later is better than never right!?!) and your videos have taught me a lot on just how to hike and how to hike more efficiently! I appreciate any tips you can always give us! Looking forward to your next adventure!
Thank you so much Lindsay. I’m glad I could help.
So great to see you up on the net, Rev! What an incredible trip…and those views! I’m glad you got to spend some time with Marmalade, too. Thank you for sharing your journey with us!
You’re welcome Jay. Yeah, I had to carry Marmalade almost the whole way. 😂
@@TheHikingRev Now that is a true friend! I start the Colorado Trail on August 9th and might need someone to carry me, too!!
Great video! Thanks for sharing. I'm in the early stages of planning a first trip to the Sierras. I've been leaning towards doing the Ansel Adams Wilderness and your video is further confirmation that this is the place to go. I'm surprised how much snow is out there. The date on your video says July, is that when you went?
Thanks. Actually, it was June 18 - 20. It was absolutely breathtaking. I would highly recommend it.
Awesome Rev!! Forgot to mention I listened to your "How to hike uphill" and followed your directions and it made a HUGE difference. Thank you so much. Now to try the Downhill. :) Our Lord sure made some beautiful countryside. Thanks for sharing.
Yes He did. Let me know about hiking downhill.
A beautiful trip to relax and watch here on a hot Saturday morning! Thanks for sharing this with us, Rev!👍
You’re quite welcome.
Awesome!
Thanks James.
Rev, I agree....1000 island lake MAYBE best place in the Sierras..........but there's many others too. Evolution, Bear Lakes, Rae Lakes, Miter Basin, Palisade Lakes, Bighorn Plateau, Yosemite Valley, Tehepite Valley, Dusy Basin, Ionian Basin, Goddard Canyon, Mineral King, what can I say....the Sierras are truly the Power of God made manifest and benign for us......especially in summer and fall.
Agreed 100%.😁
Amazing video! Would you mind sharing what trails you did to make that loop? We would love to do that exact hike sometime in the near future. Thanks for all the videos.
Thanks Jeremy. Day one - Start at Agnew Meadows Trailhead, Shadow Creek Trail to River Trail to Thousand Island Lake. Day two - John Muir Trail to PCT to Shadow Creek Trail to Ediza Lake. Day three - Shadow Creek Trail to River Trail back to Agnew Meadow Trailhead.
@@TheHikingRev thanks so much!
Damn, I am early to this one! Beautiful landscape. I started day hiking because of your video, just did a 24km hike two days ago near my city and had so much fun (although it was scorching hot). Good to see you have fun!
Thanks. Yes it was a beautiful trip.
Beautifully shot Rev, definitely some of your best work yet!
Oh, thank you.
Absolutly amazing! Thanks a lot!!! What camera do you use? It is really very good quality. Greatings from EU, Czechia.
Thanks Petr. I used my iPhone 12 Pro for that video. I have the iPhone 14 Pro now. Love it!
Nice video- well done!
Thanks.
Wow what a beautiful scenery. Its my dream to do hikes like this, unfortunally I live in a flat country 😖 greetings to you Rev ,from Max from the Netherlands
Hey Max from the Netherlands! I met some hikers from the Netherlands on my recent trip in the Sierra Nevada’s. You’ll have to come to the US and hike.
O.k.I will, I start a crowd funding right away 😉
Great video Rev!...going back for the camera is why i don't make anymore hiking videos...LOL!...wel that and the whole youtube editing fiasco!...woods
Yes, Woods, it is a pain but as long as you enjoy it, it’s worth it.
I am enjoying your videos! I am considering an Appalachian Trail thru hike attempt. And am wondering where it is best to purchase the gear (all I have is an osprey aether 60 pack and mini mo jet boil cooking system that were gifts). Do you go to REI for everything or the individual companies (ie Z packs) or somewhere else or a combination of all of the above? Maybe you answer these questions in one of your videos? I am 73 and run about 4 times/week for about 17 miles total. The only hiking I have done in the last 30 years was a 1 day up and back, to the trailhead, to Mt. Whitney about 9 years ago.
Hey Mike. I ordered most of my stuff from “cottage companies.” The bad thing about ordering from “cottage companies” is you can’t “try before you buy.” REI has a tremendous return policy though. Check out my gear video playlist for ideas.
Rev, great video and I'm looking forward to your 21-day adventure posting soon. Questions: How do you get to this trailhead? Where did you catch the trolley/shuttle? Is there a sign/post that shows the way (turn off) to Ediza Lake? How well are the two trails marked? This looks like a great weekend loop. Walk on, Brother.
Hey Bill. Great questions. I went to Mammoth and stayed at a motel room. The next day I caught the shuttle bus from Mammoth at the Adventure Center near Mammoth Mountain's Main Lodge to Agnew Meadows trail head. I believe the cost of the shuttle was $15 round-trip.
I used Gia GPS app to follow the trail. Plus the trail is fairly well marked.
Great footage. Been looking to see what you found out about your heart issue from the second doctor, but haven't seen you mention it. Being 66, I have a wee bit of interest in that.....
I’m sorry Gary. I had three stents put in my Right Coronary Artery back in August of last year. I’m doing good now. Not 100% but I’m doing better.
Love your videos. Do or did you carry both an airbed AND/OR a foambed for sleeping in your tent or just the foambed? I am confused as to what to carry for thru hike. Do most thru hikers carry both or just one over the other?
Thanks Stephanie. I’ll leave a link here to the air mattress I use. Therm-a-Rest NeoAir UberLite Ultralight Backpacking Sleeping Pad, Regular - 20 x 72 Inches, Orion a.co/d/1PdkEmD
Of all the PCT, the Sierra is the part that I am most interested in hiking. I can't forsee when I would be able to do the entire PCT but one day I want to section hike the Sierra, maybe in conjuction with the High Sierra Trail and Tahoe Rim Trail
Those are great plans. Go for it.
Spectacular video footage, looks so awesome. You captured this so well.
Do you use water purifiers when getting water from the stream? Or drink as it comes?
Thanks Mandy. I always filter. I’ve had Giardia before. Not fun!
@@TheHikingRev thank you. I presumed that’s what you did. But I know some just drink as it comes
hi reverand , that was a beautiful journey u took me on. u didn mention the ending trail u closed with , what was the ending point of this backacking trip. curious cos i know its not a loop because u took that shuttle to agnews.
👍
Wow 🤩 spectacular scenery! Hope the skeeters didn’t bother you the entire time? I see you carried bear canisters- did you see any bears! Was that a coyote or deer- ? Nice you have a Marmalade to hike with. I’m going to check out his channel.! Happy 4th July weekend 🎊
Thanks. We didn’t see a bear but bear cans are required in the Sierra. I thought that was a wolf but it may have been a coyote.
WOW!! Beautiful!! On my bucket list. This got me so excited to start planning a trip there. I do have a few questions if you have a free minute. Is there a town close to where the trail head is? You mentioned taking a bus from where? And because I solo hike I wondered about day hikes though I would love to do what you guys did. Have you ever thought about leading a group you would be great at it.
Blessings!
Thanks Dorinda. I stayed in Mammoth Lakes then caught a shuttle to the Agnes Meadows Trailhead.
Happy Sunday, thank you for your quick reply it’s so appreciated! Blessing!! Safe and happy trails
Sweet! What kind of training schedule are you doing lately? I still need to work up to a trip like this!
Thanks Enrique. I’m just hiking the trails near me to prepare for my PCT Section hike in mid July.
Two of my favorite hikers in one video, what a surprise. Nice camera work and editing, too. Of course, the scenery was okay and that helps 😂 Yeah, gotta go back for the camera😉
Thanks. Don’t want to forget the camera.
Great video
Thanks John.😁
excellent video
Thanks. Hope you enjoyed it. 😁
Beautiful! When did you do the hike (dates).
Thanks. June 18 through the 20th, 2022😁
How great Thou art! GK
Thanks my friend.
Awesome trip!! Scenery is gorgeous and you did it justice with your camera work. What camera did you use?
Thanks Jack. iPhone 12 Pro. 1080p @ 60 fps. Edited on iMovie.
