In Nigeria they’re called ọmọ-ọ̀dọ̀ and it’s not slavery. Is it classism - 💯. But not slavery. In biblical terms, they were called handmaids and servants, in modern terms theirs called house helps that are paid. It’s more comparable to lifestyle in the movie «The Help». I get what he is saying. Coming with an income from the U.S. and having help cater to your every whim is awkward as if master slave. He said nothing wrong. I am upper class African, I have always found it very colonial in the sense of elitism. But on the other hand, they are not enough jobs provided in Africa so sometimes this is the only means to an end for many people. As an individual, you cannot save the world, but you have to live within the system that’s provided. The minimum wage in Nairobi is KSh15,201/month (U$118.30/month). That’s slave wages. The federal minimum wage in the U.S. is $7.25/hr i.e. $1,261.5/mth or 15,138/yr (based on 40hr/wk). That means in one month a person that lives at home w/ family gets roof, electricity, running water, some Top Ramen® if not better, public transportation fee, unlimited phone plane, and can still take a plane trip on a Spirit/Southwest special to Hawaii or Florida for $300 to stay w/a family/friend…let’s just say. Now compare that with KSh15,201/month ($118.30/mth) in Nairobi. Boys' quarters or maids quarters are often WAY better than their family’s home in Kibera or Mathare where there is no infrastructure (electricity, proper roads, running water). So getting room and board is swank. Then a salary on top of that 😳 But your phone is not unlimited (they still have data), and it will take 10~12 monthly salaries just to afford a plane ticket from NBO to just ADD (Addis Ababa) which cost around $680 nonstop; meanwhile a comparable trip from JFK to ORD (Chicago) is $167 nonstop. So, to begin the salary in Africa does not match the actual cost of living as it pertain to int'l mobility and comforts. So, their salaries are rather slave pittance…let’s be real.

Yes, they are not forced. You agree on a wage that is agreeable to both. They provide a service and you pay for it. They can terminate the contract if they don't like it or you take unnecessary liberty with them. They do it out of their free will unlike slaves who were forced and belonged to their masters who bought them.

A house boy is a horrible name, but they aren't slaves. They are paid a salary. My house manager is definitely NOT a slave. Her quarters are a lot nicer than some people's flats, and I pay her double what most housekeepers make. Her daily chores usually take 3-4 hours if that much. If she wants to go out in the evening, she can go out. She leaves every Saturday and comes back on Monday. I know it isn't intentional, but please be careful about spreading misinformation. In the west, some people have chefs and sometimes pay for a service wash or people to clean their home. Both my sisters in London have cleaners for their homes. It is not unheard of, it's just more money then in Africa but it's relative to what they earn and is worth it for them. One of the cleaners owns the actual cleaning company and is making so much money as she has many cleaners on contracts all over London working for her own company.
She is preparing to sell the business for a lot of money too. Those services are not an undignified thing to do.

The africans in the Americas were mistreated, had no citizenship or if they were given citizenship, it was solely based on their socioeconomic status of slavery, and had no freedom to leave and had to be sold. That's slavery. These guys in Kenya tanzania etc are free people, they're employed, no ones whipping them unlike the Americas, no forced breeding for slave purposes so they can't be compared. There's an air of humanity in this service than in that slavery with no rights.

I live and work in America and the housemates in Africa have their rent paid free meals three times a day. So basically they have no living expenses and they only work 3 to 4 hours in terms of actual physical labor. That sounds like a pretty sweet deal to me. So basically they pay is for whatever they want since they don't have any expenses

@@AustonHolleman This is not a fact. My housekeeper gets paid double what most housekeepers make. My driver literally gets paid a bankers salary. People don't need to lie. Some of us employed housekeepers in the US.

@farayimatibiri1724 My housekeeper cooks for us once or twice a week. Whatever she cooks, she eats. When she cuts fruit, she takes her share. When she goes to the market, my driver takes her in my vehicle. I don't put her on trotro. She's either in my vehicle or Uber. We don't suffer in this house. I still pay my old housekeeper her salary as long as she is in school.

Kings and Queens have palaces that are too large to be maintained. Working class couples in parts of Africa don't have the time for the women to be the prized "traditional African housewife " or the "suffering superwoman who has a career and still cleans and cooks." So Austin, sooner or later Household Robots will take over the house chores. Do you have a solution for the mass unemployment that will follow? Houseworkers are under employment and have all rights in the constitution as other workers.

Equating a paid butler or maid with an enslaved person is deeply embarrassing coming from a Black American. Surely, you must be aware of the history of chattel slavery and how equating that to someone who is PAID to provide a service is wildly inaccurate. Who raised you?

It is a form of dormant slavery. Children under the age of 18 should be going to school not made into maids for financial gain. Make sue u hire an adult not a child, don’t ignore the societal i issue because you are a descendent of slaves, but educate the people on the importance of giving their children a fair shot at education.

@diemmarley1217 My former housekeeper came to me when she was 18 years old. Her mother died 3 months prior to her coming to this house. She left to attend school almost 2 years later. I still pay her salary and anything related to school fees as her father is 78 and does not contribute to her or her 16 year old brother, who is also in school.

These children are working for their family and I know this is the norm in many countries, but we are privilege to know much more so don’t play into it. Just like girl still being excised yet people think it’s normal. It’s not.
