  • This is me racing in the Enduro that goes up 90 Mile Beach as far as the tide will take us, around driftwood and obstacles and then back down through the exposed snapper holes around the corner into Ahipara and then back up again for a total of around 180 km. I can't remember if I came 3rd or 4th in the end, but there were many spots where I was verging on out of control fighting to keep 3 wheels on the ground.
I'm pretty sure my time was 1 hour 42 for the 180km so pretty respectable speed for a 5 square meter sail. I'm in KZ398 aka known as Daddy or Gino.
Land yachting has a history of over 100 years in Northland where a minister was known to travel up and down the beach on a craft with wheels and a sail, to preach and visit with Maori tribes who lived near the beach.
It didn't make a great spectator sport, unless you had an SUV and could chase us. Otherwise you would see us start, then you wait an hour or so for us to race past and head another 20 miles or so south and then we'd come back to the finish line.
That made it a very difficult sport to get spectators or sponsorship for .
