Comparing Blade Flex in the Thrust?

  • Introducing Stabhim, my homemade excuse for a thrusting target. Since I've reviewed a number of European style swords, I thought it might be useful to take a look at how they flex under the pressure and impact of a couple of short solid thrusts and compare. Let me know what you think, and if this "test" would be a useful addition to future sword reviews.
    Swords featured: Hanwei Practical Plus Katana, Musashi Kogarusu Maru (the "control group"); Cold Steel Cavalier Rapier, Windlass Musketeer Rapier, Windlass Christus Imperat Rapier, Windlass Black Marauder Rapier, Kingston Renaissance Side Sword, Windlass Munich, Kingston Katzbalger, Kingston Atrim Type XIV, Ronin Italian Arming Sword, Hanwei Cromwell Backsword, Cold Steel English Backsword.

    Great usage of the extra brown paper bags. This was a really fun one to watch. You have some really nice looking blades!

    The Cavalier Rapier is an excellent thruster. Just solid.
    Though it's cutting performance is more of a feeble cut. Edge bevel?
    It's definitely a thruster.

    the cavalier is the perfect modern day rapier, im so sick and tired of seeing flimsy blades, i once encountered a guy who was offended that my personal rapier was stiff bladed and he ranted "rapiers are meant to flex, thats just how there made" so i asked him to use his windlass rapier on a ballistic gel torso (i use that for both accuracy and power training) he didnt even penetrate an inch into it, then i took my custom made rapier (picked it up in germany from a mensur club i trained in for a while, and yes i have a well earned scar) i got about half the blade through the gel using the exact same basic thrust he used. stiff blades should have next to no flex, and from experience i found a lenticular blade profile makes for better thrusts, well at least for my style

    @Michael Rizzo this was a neat idea. 😊 Seems the Black Marauder took the day, as far as the rapiers went. Ol Angelo cautioned his readers about swords that flex too much. Your girl knows what's good 😁.

      She does have great instinctual taste in weapons. When she sees something that catches her eye, she knows it'll be good for her. With handguns, we call her Deadshot.

    If you reprofile that black marauder blade & turn it into a sharp & you will be pleasantly surprised by its performance. I also changed the grip to a more oval shape to make it easier to get my edge alignment right. As well as stripping off the blueing on the blade. Btw i can understand the wrist issue, hope it gets better. Luckily it was my off hand that got damaged. I can still fence w/ my off hand but not ambidextrous as i was.

    I was wondering if you knew the answer to a question I have.
    I bought the Windlass Deschaux Rapier this year, and its great big fan. However I've already got quite a few dings in it from playing pirates with my friends, essentially stage fighting badly, and I wanted to know if a Hanwei replacement blade would theorectically fit in my sword.
    With your large collection i was hoping you might be able to tell me if that is highly unlikely or if it is theorectically possible?
    Thank you

      Two challenges you will have: First, the threading won't match between Windlass and Hanwei, and since the Hanwei is smaller you won't be able to re-thread the Windlass Pommel to fit. BUT you can buy a pommel that fits the Hanwei perfectly at Castille Armory. Here's link to a similar barrel-style pommel. Select the M6 threading for Hanwei blades.
      Next will be fitting the tang to the hilt. If the new one is too thin for the old grip, you can put some tape around it or shim it. If it's too long, you can fill the space between the grip and pommel with washers. But if it's too wide or too short, you'll have to carefully recut the shape of the tang with files or a grinder. Check out my video on my Hanwei Sidesword Build Project.
      I hope that helps. The Hanwei Practical Rapier blades are pretty nice. Also, Castille might have a blade that will fit. They are extremely helpful. They specialize in builds for HEMA and stage combat.

      @@michaelrizzo5523 thank you very much, that is very helpful. And I don’t mind the small chips in the blade of the Windlass, it’s not sharp currently anyway. But I think my best option is to get one my specifically intended for stage combat with replacement options available.
      I will certainly check out the side sword build I haven’t seen that video so I’ll watch it now, and I haven’t heard of Castille Armory so I’ll check that out now, I bought my Windlass from Kult of Athena. I really want a side sword or a smallsword cause I think that will be better at stage fighting against my friends cutlasses because the rapiers just got too much reach. But like I’ve heard you say many times, everything is sold out.
      Hopefully this doesn’t turn into an even more expensive hobby than lego.

    the cavalier is a bit out of my budget but im still set on getting the musketeer rapier, i adore the elegance of it and seeing its quite a sturdy thruster (pun intended) makes me feel more confident in its ability to stay in one piece

    • @michaelrizzo5523
      @michaelrizzo5523  2 года назад

      My only issues with the Musketeer have been the uncomfortable square-edged quillon block and the pommel spinning loose after repeated hard impacts, which could be remedied with a dab of Loctite. The Cav is stiff, nimble, but has no edges for slashing. I'll probably do an update soon.

    Good test of a variety of sword types. Most looked like they had good stiffness in the blade, even the rapiers were good. How much pressure do you think was on the blade? 10, 20, 30 pounds guestimate? excellent video and selection of swords.

    • @michaelrizzo5523
      @michaelrizzo5523  3 года назад

      No idea how much was in the impact, but it drove the blades pretty deep. Maybe one day I'll be able to afford a pressure sensor. Using a household scale I tried to replicate how much my 200lb self was leaning on the sword and it came out around 30lbs. Haven't had anything bend and take a set so far. The sword that worries me the most is the Kingston Side Sword. I was considering making a custom piece with a Hanwei arming sword blade.

    superb video, thank you so much! I have the musketeer rapier and am pondering whether to also get a rapier on the lighter side of the weight range for comparison. Do you have any experience with some of the Hanwei rapiers (Gustav, Solingen, Torino), how they would fare in this flex test?

    • @michaelrizzo5523
      @michaelrizzo5523  2 года назад +1

      Thanks! Unfortunately those Hanwei rapiers seem to have gone off market by the time I got myself on this new journey. I used the hilt of a Hanwei Practical on my recent sidesword build project, but that came with a very flexible nail-head blunt blade. For light and rigid, I'm still impressed with my Cold Steel Cavalier.
