However if you live in a burrough of nyc (Bronx, Staten island, Brooklyn, Queens) like I do, you know your not considered living in NYC… Here around me you rep bk or queens. Anywaaayyyy, I call you a damn fool because the majority of NYC - Including a large portion of the burroughs, have been gentrified around the turn of the century. Unfortunately it took a pause, followed by a turn for the worse starting w covid lockdown and has been getting worse and worsw the past 4 years. HOWEVER, Its still ALOT safer then it was durong the crack epidemic of the mid 80s - mid 90s….The areas of NY City you knew to avoid was uptown (manhattan island, the actual “city”. Uptown is Mainly Harlem but included other bad areas). Central Brooklyn - Very bad back then, some has gone back to being crappy but for the most part its much better. Places I would never think of walking around alone in the early 90s are now much nicer gentrified areas. You would not catch me walking through Brownsville, Bushwick, or bed stuy 25-30 years ago. Queens is pretty much all decent now, because of gentrification and MAJOR Diversity. Every neighborhood is separated by race….surprisingly it doesn’t lead to gang violence because its just so damn segregated, Only place that went back to crap is the queens bridge area and thats still better than it was. Staten Island will always be the same… a couple very bad areas, most likely surrounding the Staten Island dump and the ferry (guessing because Staten island is NYCs forgotten burrow. You only go there to drive through it into New Jersey, or to visit someone. Besides one or two crappy spots, Staten island is like a smelly westchester. Its filles with rich pockets with an odd neighborhood here or there that looks dumpy. last, but definitely not least, in fact, the opposite, is the South Bronx area. This area was one of the worst during the crack epidemic, and it continues to be one of the worst today. The only place that rivaled south Bronx in violence in New York City’s terrible times was the neighborhoods in Brooklyn I mentioned, the Queensbridge project area, and, of course Harlem. Now, however, all those places have been gentrified and are very nice, however the south bronx is slipping back into ghetto trash more and more as each year passes by. unfortunately, this is a trend that just about every neighborhood in New York City and its boroughs have felt since the pandemic lockdown began. if it continues on this trajectory, I wouldn’t be surprised if by the start of the next decade (or 5ish years from now) New York City will have crept up towards the top 5-10 dangerous in the U.S. and before I get flamed, for this, please mind you there is a big difference between Memphis, Tennessee ghettos, Birmingham, Alabama ghettos, East St. Louis ghettoes, Houston ghettoes, and other widespread “country type urban decay” It will be more like Chi-town, Detroit (hopefully never that bad although ive heard good things about gentrification beginning there though ill believe it when I see it, San frans tenderloin poop shoot…. Time to keepNYC and all its burrows safe (well except Staten Island…we just need that for the landfill…. and possibly in 2026 when Rikers Island is slated to close down possibly a new jail lol)
