I wish food network had someone with History on there. One of the most heartbreaking things about this pandemic is that we are losing so many elderly folks. There is SO much we can learn from them! This video was in my recommended in the year 2019. I'm a pre law student trying to get by on cheap and healthy meals, which isn't easy. Most of the money I earn as an English teacher goes towards paying my tuition and law textbooks, so I really need to be frugal. These videos are a blessing and I'm glad they showed up in my recommended. I'm sad to find out that Clara has since passed away but I'd like to thank her and her family for uploading these videos.
Don’t be sad she died. Celebrate the fact that she lived long enough that we got to meet her in our own way. I love these videos and her stories were wonderful.
If you're camping, use cinnamon red hots instead. Wrap the cored apple in tin foil and stick it in the coals for about 20 minutes. Perfect camping desert.
That sounds scrumptious. Now I want to try it even though I am not camping. I'm sure it is less messy, too, using candies instead of loose sugar and ground cinnamon. What is the substitute for butter when camping? Hot dog grease? Nothing?
I'm gonna have to say that some might people just not like the recipe, but even then that is still a wrong thing to do, but the fact that there were people that actually disliked her memorial video. I don't understand why there has to be sick people in this world. Why can't everyone just be like Ms. Clara? I miss her so much...
The world is filled with nutcases. I watched a video recently where the youtuber said getting harassing emails and comments, including death threats, is a normal part of youtubing. Imagine, even Clara put up with that to bring her wisdom to the world. Love her.
My parents went through the depression. My mom would reuse foil after washing it. Apples were a mainstay in our home with oranges in the fall. We picked our own strawberries and mom made jam. I only thought I was poor. Was I mistaken. I bought some paper towels for mom when they came out. She had the original roll when she died in 1980. We used cloth towels and wash clothes not sponges. What a learning experience I had. On Wednesday I'll be 65 and still use cloth towels in the kitchen and will do apples again. Best times of my life.
See Canon I'm not exactly poor but I too don't use paper towels, only newspaper if I need to clean up grease or put down spoons on the stove. I also reuse aluminum and my one of my sons won't use disposables for parties, only china and silverware, says his guests even serve themselves what they'll eat without wasting food. What my family is is environmentally conscious. We HATE waste and pollution. During the GF it might've been poverty that made folks limit what they used, now some of us do it to conserve the planet. Peace to you!!!
Turtle Bob i saw that in the comments after i commented this. i’m glad i didn’t see that before i called my grandma. but it made me grateful that i did call her
This is so sweet! My mom died at 96 1/2 years of age in 2019. She loved baked apples. This reminds me so so much of her! My grandmother’s named was Clara! Glad thatI stumbled upon this video in 2023.
Aanchal Ji Is that what she said?? Oh my! I heard it so differently. I will have to watch it again. I feel so bad if I anyway slighted this woman's words/memory. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.
Theresa Champagne But you have to admit, although not in her case, many raised their children that way. It was "normal". But I again thank you for bringing that to my attention. Wqs gonna delete my comment, but maybe I will leave it there along with your correction in case anyone in the future mistakenly hears what I thought I heard. BTW, Happy Holidays!
Now I start to think about it she lived in the time period of the Great Depression, she was born in 1915, Jesus Christ. I wish I could’ve known her soon before she had passed.
When I was in high school I found one of Clara’s videos and made it for my class, as we were learning about the Great Depression. Thank you for having shared these videos, your legacy lives on❤️
The way she repeats herself reminds me of some beloved elderly people in my life who have all sadly passed away. These videos are so heartwarming and comforting.
To Clara's Family: I've watched many of these videos and keep coming back to watch them over again. Thank you for sharing your Grandmother with us. Her recipes and spirit will live on. Be blessed.
My grandma is almost 92 and she’s already a shell of her former self… wheelchair bound… and Clara is walking around at 94. I know she already died, but I can’t help but wish her long years of health and happiness anyway. 😍🤷♀️
I tried this recipe tonight and I was truely inspired , it was delicious , I am so sorry for the loss of Clara, I just saw her videos for the first time today and I loved watching her cook and tell us about her life growing up and recipes that she and her mother would make, she is such an inspiration and I hope to meet her when I go to heaven one day ❤️
"My mother would give us a slap a piece and that would settle everything"!!!! What a funny lady, Love you Clara. God bless you in Heaven lovely lady. I know you are entertaining everyone up there.
wow...my Nan made these! Hers were stuffed with cooked apple pieces, sultanas, cinnamon and cloves though. She served them hot with a drizzle of custard. Right now, during this virus crisis with shop shelves near empty, I wish I had learned more from my Nan. Miss you Nanna!!
i can't say enough how happy i am you shared her videos with us. She has the appeal that would have won people over in a Julia Child way had she been on television. Her stories and recipes would have been a wonderful show to watch. Thankfully youtube brings it to us.
Hi, I simply love Clara. My Grandmother was also named Clara. And she was a fantastic cook and Baker as well. When I'm looking for something out of my ordinary meals, I come to her site. I have to tell you, I uses to be afraid to make bread until I saw her video. Now I love making her bread! And when I'm feeling down or just not feeling well, I watch her videos and she just plain makes me feel better! Thank you for making all of these videos of your Grandmother. I know she brings great joy, comfort and good food to many!
I watch this whenever i'm feeling down and it works like a charm everytime, just watching a sweet old lady cooking and being human, being herself... it makes my soul warm and my heart calm
My mom used to make these when I was little (we weren't rich)... And I thought it was the best thing ever!!! I didn't know it was because we had no money!!🥳
And we find that this kind of eating is healthy and nutritious made with love ♥️ In 2019 people are really suffering so it’s amazing that we have the need to look back like that 😉
Bryan Gustavson are you implying that I won’t? Perhaps you and Rachel misinterpreted my comment.. im broke. Not making fun of anyone or anything else. Now go on with yourself, you happy goose you, and look fondly onto the upcoming eras, too. Cheers!
@@samuelaurora3632 This may be my own sense of innocence speaking here, but it seems they're trying to make the best of a bad situation. Much like you are with looking up great depression recipes. I still use my great gran's recipes when times are tough. or even when they're not and i just miss her. There are still starving children, there's just more people who grew up as those starving children to be able to and want to make a difference. Trust me. in my area 1 in 9 kids are starving or undernourished, and 2/9 are malnourished. Recently the state (in my area) mandated that all student school lunches be free. It's literally the main way I was fed on school days. (early 90's) they didn't have the summer lunch programs. I was lucky if we got to buy groceries once a month between two houses. (grans and my father's.) When my brother had to go to summer school I went to the advanced learning program at the school library and the school fed us because we couldn't bring our own lunches.
Angel Dark thank you for some kind of elaboration. The irony is that I would bet the bottom dollar against the two previous commenters that I have struggled financially, especially physically, more than they would give credit to. Yes maybe they were making the best of things. On the contrary, I was actually relating. There was no need for anyone to act high and mighty, like the second one did haha. If it helps the candle burn a little brighter then oh well, more power to everyone. I appreciate your opening, and your relation will not be forgotten. Perhaps your past stories will swim through my head tonight during meditation. May I ask which area you are from?
The fact that your family had the instinct to film her cooking is absolutely priceless. What a wonderful treasure these videos are, and an excellent record of a fascinating woman’s life.
I just ordered her book 📖 I can’t get enough of her , she reminds me of my grandmother.I wish I would have met her in person she is such a sweet person and a great story teller 🥰😍
I just discovered this lady & her channel 2 days ago. What a wonderful & beautiful legacy her & her grandson have left for their family & the world... This lady reminds me of my Mom & her sister, my "Cioci" ("Aunt" in Polish) in the way she cooks things, shows you how to cook, & tells stories as to how it came to be... Clara actually looks a lot like how I would imagine my Mom would look today if she made it into her 90's in good health - eventhough my Mom was the child of Polish immigrants born in Brooklyn (vice Clara, who I understand was of Sicilian immigrant parents, born in Illinois). My Mom passed away after terrible debilitating illness of about 12 years @ the age of 67 in 1997 - & Cioco passed away about 6 years later, right after her 90th birthday. My Mom's name was Irena & her sister was Stella. -So, needless to say, these videos are precious to me. Thank you again to Clara's grandson for sharing her with the world ❤

Ary Fausto Bless You! Working as a Teacher & going to Law School.. You’re an amazing person. Hope All is Well 😊👍💪👏👏
Well said. Best wishes to you.
I don't think it's taht healthy with all that sugar

Don’t be sad she died. Celebrate the fact that she lived long enough that we got to meet her in our own way. I love these videos and her stories were wonderful.
I do too! I just love Clara. Whenever I might feel down I come watch her videos and instantly feel better! 💝
Nothing?
why in the world would some1 come to see this womans video to give a thumbs down? people are whacky
I'm gonna have to say that some might people just not like the recipe, but even then that is still a wrong thing to do, but the fact that there were people that actually disliked her memorial video. I don't understand why there has to be sick people in this world. Why can't everyone just be like Ms. Clara? I miss her so much...
stangnet83 yeah there are at least 63 people that deserve to be beaten over disliking this video
The world is filled with nutcases. I watched a video recently where the youtuber said getting harassing emails and comments, including death threats, is a normal part of youtubing. Imagine, even Clara put up with that to bring her wisdom to the world. Love her.
I think my search history has misunderstood the kind of depression I was looking for
Bella EXE me too
No it didnt... lol cured it!

Yeah and you got upgraded

I made these last night and they were delicious. Forever grateful to have a dose of Grandma just a click away. RIP Clara.

Peace to you!!!
did she invest in any stocks?
This would be bomb af with french vanila ice cream. I love her so much. Her videos are very relaxing to me.. And got such good recipes.
My mom used to make these, and yeah, they're the bomb with some ice cream. We also used to have them alone for breakfast, warm and yummy.
Add some oatmeal or granola on top for a hearty breakfast.
Wilk have this with ice cream on valentine's day
Who tf comes to Clara’s kitchen and gives her a thumbs down?! Smh.
Ive just stated that myself it’s absolutely disgusting and they’re are more stupid than words could say
NIT wit
Maybe they are gluten intolerant, Clara said the kids would be given a slice of pizza at the end of eating dessert. Weird, but yum😅
Adds a whole cup of sugar
"Very nutritious" xD
Masta Theif Maybe not for us since we consume so much processed food with added sugar, but back then it would’ve been fine
It is nutritious compared to starving

She passed away in 2013, Rest In Peace to this wonderful woman. I wish I knew who she was sooner.
I keep seeing this post in pretty much all of her videos. 🤣🤦🏻♀️
Its sad that all she wanted was to grow to be 100 or older and she was 2 years away from her goal when she passed...
She is so lovely. Who ever knew her was very lucky. Thanks for introducing her to us
this video made me call my grandma and talk to her for 45 minutes. thank you. it made my day better
Maggie Trowbridge I’m sorry to say this but she has passed and will sadly not see this comment

"My mother would give us a slap a piece and that would settle everything"
Lol! Old school, for sure.
you heard wrong. clara said "my mother would give us a slice of PIZZA and that would settle everything"
Chuckling...not so old. My Mom did it too, especially in Church when we were acting up.
Aanchal Ji I heard slap a piece as well... it wouldn't make sense that she would randomly mention pizza
Shes making baked apples with God.

This video was so wholesome but I’m crying in the club bc she was 94 in the vid but it was posted like 10 years ago
She lived a full life. Nothing sad about humans being humans.
You watch cooking videos while out clubbing? 🤨
I mean people can live to be 104

@TheMuzillajeff that’s how shit some clubs are

Now I start to think about it she lived in the time period of the Great Depression, she was born in 1915, Jesus Christ. I wish I could’ve known her soon before she had passed.

When I was in high school I found one of Clara’s videos and made it for my class, as we were learning about the Great Depression. Thank you for having shared these videos, your legacy lives on❤️
Hoping you are Amanda McKnight's son. This lady is awesome. My wife and I both love her.
You had a great idea there!
The way she repeats herself reminds me of some beloved elderly people in my life who have all sadly passed away. These videos are so heartwarming and comforting.

wow...my Nan made these!
Thankfully youtube brings it to us.
sure hated that this sweet lady died. But as long as there's RUclips she will always live on
Her loving energy is intoxicating! What a special woman. I'm sure she's resting in love!
Godspeed Clara.

In 2019 people are really suffering so it’s amazing that we have the need to look back like that 😉
Oh Rachel, I love how maternal you are
Bryan Gustavson are you implying that I won’t?
Thank you for continuing to keep these videos up

Thank you for sharing these recipes with us Clara. I am grandparent-less so I especially appreciate and enjoy the stories you share :)
I feel yeah I lost my last grandparent when I was 14 3 years ago I never got to experience this with my grandma
