    Im a figure skater that started really , really late with dreams of going to team USA and nationals someday. I don't exactly have a very good or supportive coach to help me, and I've been getting yelled at by my coach a lot now recently. Its really discouraging when no one believes in you except yourself and your family(not even your coach). BUT! Within the 1 year that I've been skating, I moved from rentals to all my doubles (except double axel). From the worst skater on a session to one of the best. but I know that's not enough because others my age are doing triples at the level I want to achieve! Let me update here when I get my double axel! I'll keep working hard every single day. Please cheer me on! 💪 -A small figure skater with big dreams

    I started skating this year at 16 and I totally understand what you mean about the loneliness. Im still a beginner and going to freestyle sessions is terrifying. It seems like everyone already knows each other at the rinks already and everything's established so making friends is tough. Genuinely, thank you for posting this! This is really inspiring and it gives me hope that at some point I can do doubles! Even your start was super impressive!!! (rentals suck LOL)

      As a formal adult skater who skated freestyle sessions with much better and younger skaters let me give you some advice. Be aggressive. Skate with as much speed as you can. It will show the other skaters you belong on that session. Freestyle sessions are kind of mini competitions. You have to complete to show that you deserve to share that ice space as well.

    It's interesting, I got into ice skating 5 months ago as a means of learning solo physical expression on the ice, but in taking adult group lessons I found a small community of people who share in each other's progress. • @jlcmsw

    What I admire about your skating is that you just went for everything, whether it was a jump, spin or shoot the duck. I last skated 20 years ago as a 30 and old. You did what I never did: land the dreaded axel and my loop was my dreaded jump. The craziest thing my coach made me do to correct my flat footed jump landings was skate full speed around the entire rink and do waltz jumps. She had me do this about 20 times in a row. Let me tell you when you land a jump at that kind of speed you can really feel the impact on your body. I don’t know how the elite skaters do triples and quads with that speed. I really enjoyed your skating journey. You will have great memories of it forever.

    this is so relatable... I started figure skating in October 2021 when I was 25 so a bit "old". I used to do speed skating so I'm able to do crossovers and gain a decent amount of speed but that's about it. My skill level now is similar to your video around 13:40. the loneliness is REAL. I was signed up to a practice session and it was only middle school girls too. at first I was determined but at some point those sessions just made me feel out of place and depressed and I stopped going. I also have a practice session for adults, but it can feel a bit crowded and most of them are so much better than me. I'm also really embarrassed and scared of trying new things and falling in front of other people so your video inspired me in a way to try harder. my goal is to do a choreography to a music I like one day with some double jumps, i hope i can do it no matter how long it takes. but it's definitely tough mentally. it feels like the sport is not super 'accessible' if that makes sense

Then I moved on to bigger moves like loops and flips. After came the axels which took quite a while. I was able to finally be able to balance my camel sit a few weeks ago.. still proud of it lol. I wish you luck! Taking thirty falls is worth the one victory.

    I started figure skating a few months back at 28 so I’m the oldest beginner at my rink by far here in London. Everyone that skates in London comes to my rink, all of the others my age are pros whereas I’m here only just able to do cross overs (with bad form!!). There’s less of a loneliness aspect here I suppose because it’s much more of a niche sport, again there’s maybe only two ice skating rinks in London which are open all year round. But I do wish I had a friend who would skate with me during the week, I can feel isolated on the ice sometimes when I’m practicing. Awesome video and awesome progress!

    But I mean, that skate is ICONIC. I starting skating in December just because I wanted a new hobby and was amazed by figure skaters since I was a young boy. Being a 32 yr old male adult I set my goal low with a hope to land 1 jump. Little did I know that I was capable of landing all my singles but an axel in 4 months. Love progress vids and can appreciate the falls upon falls hahah. I was self taught and took my first lesson last week and was so nervous but then left feeling very proud for what I have been able to accomplish by myself, just on outdoor rinks in -40c all winter. You 100 percent should be very proud for accomplishing what you set out to do and unlocking the achievement 🤣Thank you for sharing your journey, both struggles and accomplishments!

    Man this video reminds me a lot of myself when I first started skating, haha!
    I started skating a little before I turned 20 and I'm about to come up on a year of figure skating on April 30th this year. When you talked about skating in the freestyle sessions, I felt that! Despite feeling that way, I tried my best not to care and just focus on my own improvement.
    Almost a year later, I'm about to compete with my first program in Freeskate 1 in May! I don't mind the solitude of the sport, but I'm lucky to have made some adult friends along the way. It's fun to cheer for them at competitions as well as the other younger skaters I've come to know.

    Great video, thanks so much for sharing your journey and its really good to hear from a male perspective! I teared up at the end, everything you said its really relatable. Also the cost thing, I also train on inline figure skates to help with the cost. A know a few skaters who that too, so even if you don't have enough money for ice time the inlines maintains your skill. I was on inline figure skates before I started my ice journey and it saved me quite a bit of money as I could already do crossovers and three turns which I learnt on my inlines, I was able to start my ice journey at a higher level therefore paying less.

    I think you should still continue skating. As a former coach (retired from coaching) with over 35+ years of experience, I feel that your determination had got you that double loop. And you're absolutely right, this sport is challenging. I'm glad you did not pursue the opportunity to ice dance with the female skater that had a parent that would sponsor you with lessons. You stuck to your guns and continued to work at it. However, I think you should skate as an adult and possibly compete as an adult competitive skater. It's fun and you meet a lot of people who also love to skate. As for your double loop attempts, once you kept your left arm in front and not turn your head on the take-off, I knew you would land it. You kept having the same consistent mistake over and over by allowing your upper body to pre-rotation and not relying on jumping up and letting your take-off edge create the take-off. Well done! I hope you go back to skate just for the fun of it. You're very talented and I feel that God has blessed you with this talent- Don't put it to waste. Take care and God bless.

    My friend, it’s a shame that you quit, but amazing that you set a goal and followed through until you felt satisfied. And it’s perfectly okay to give all you can to do something like this and decide it isn’t for you. You clearly gave it a fair shot and stuck with it through the hard parts. As a life long skater, I truly admire your progress and self growth. I constantly see people who skated in their teens, but have a transition later in life that brings them back to skating with a different sense of passion. Maybe that’ll happen to you. If not, it’s okay, but still.. just wanted to say that I’ve been skating in many disciplines for over thirty years now and it’s very rare to see someone just wake up one day with the passion you had to make it as far as you did. Very very admirable. If you carry this will and determination into other things you do, you have a bright future ahead of you. Cheers.

    If you ever want to in the future you can still come back und do it recreationally maybe even join some adult competitions and have some fun without it having to be about huge success.
    I can recommend joining some intermediate adult group classes it suddenly becomes a very social and fun experience. And messing around with your figure skating friends! There is nothing more fun then trying some ice dance moves together to fail miserably and end up lying on the ice laughing.

      Thank you! I made the most progress skating 3-4 times a week. While I did a lot of off ice toward the beginning, I didn't do very much consistently for the rest of the time. My axel and loop jump were the only things I really utilized it for. It may be helpful for conditioning, but I felt that off ice work felt too different from on ice to be very helpful. Thanks for the comment and for watching!

    i will say that there is a HUGE adult skating community out there that doesn’t take a ton of effort to tap into, especially if you starting competing, since you clearly have the skills. there are a fair amount of men, too - i’m here to tell you that it doesn’t have to be as lonely as you imagine!

    I’ve been skating and playing Hockey since I was 12 . I started Driving The Zamboni At 16 . I Was Fortunate Enough To Work At 6 Different Rinks Over My Lifetime. People Have Know Idea That Figure Skating Starts With What’s Known As Patch Ice. Where You Take A Scribe And Make A Figure Eight. It Helps You Learn Your Inside And Outside Edges. Without These Skills You Won’t Have The Understanding Of Doing Your Jumps And Spins . Also The Ice Needs To Be Soft And Slow. Where Hockey Ice Needs To Be Harder And Faster . Which Means As A Zamboni Driver. You Have To Understand The Difference . Also understanding How To Tie Your Skates Is Vary Important .

    Impressive progress, that’s true. Axel and of course loop especially.
    But what about other jumps? In this same video I saw some struggles with flip, not much of sal or toe or lutz. Or did you focus all efforts on doing an axel and achieving a double loop?

    • @mr.director8232

      Basically. I neglected toe-loop and lutz pretty bad, but I worked on flip a good bit. I also did some edge work that for whatever reason I decided not to film. It came down to what I wanted to learn the fastest.

    Your off-ice double jumps (other than axel) are so good even in the beginning! I've been trying for around 5 months to achieve double off-ice jumps (practicing ~3 times per week), but no avail.
    How much time did it take you to fully rotate twice off ice? I can do 1.5 consistently but never more.

    Awesome! I too am looking to start skating once the rink opens up again. It's closed all summer🙄 When buying your skates, what did you look for and what skates did you end up with?

    • @mr.director8232
      @mr.director8232  Год назад +1

      Thanks! That sucks that your rink is closed. I started with a pair of Jackson ultimas because I was able to get them for ~$70 at the time. While entirely better than rentals, I outgrew them quickly. With input from my coach, I ended up with Jackson Freestyles. They were affordable skates that were supportive enough for the jumps I was working on. Support for jumps is mainly what I looked for. Towards the end, I felt that they had worn out and had become too unsupportive for my size and skill-level. P.S. I wish that I had gotten my feet measured professionally to select my size. I had issues because of it. Seek the advice of the knowledgeable is my advice! Thanks for the comment!

      @cranma0125 Год назад

      @@mr.director8232 thanks for the reply! It’s super complicated to find the right skates when you know nothing about skates😂
      Getting my feet measured is probably a good idea. I have very flat feet, so I use a size 40 or 41 (Europe sizes. 9 or 10 in US women’s sizes I believe), but recently my feet were actually measured to a size 39 (8)🤣 they’re just so flat that there’s literally no room for them in my actual size. That’s partly why I find it so difficult to find the right skates, especially size-wise🙃
      But I’m glad to hear what skates you started with!

    How old where you when you started? I been skating for 7 months around and it’s hard being a male adult figure skater I’m 17. I’ve been made fun of for liking the sport I came from football so my old friends would call me “gay” and stop talking to me. I’ve made friends at the rink though but they are hockey players which is fine but I have no one to practice figure skating skills with. The other figure skaters at my rink are mainly girls who are competitive so I’m not comfortable approaching them. It’s been a fun journey and I hope I can land my Axel in a few months.

      also i relate super hard about the price of coaching and ice time. i don’t live near a rink anymore and did roller and then purely off ice training for around 1.5 years before i got on the ice and it was so much easier because of it. so if you want to continue without paying so much you could try inline/roller or just off ice! spinners are great for making progress too :)

Your pairs comments are all too real though haha; I've literally been grabbed by the arm and dragged across the ice by a coach I never formally met looking for a pairs partner for their student, and I'm not even that good!

    Are you taking lessons during all of this time or just trying to get things on your own? You are showing a lack of technique and form which is holding you back from actually getting and improving the jumps and spins. You have to think of stepping up into an axle, get your height first and then the pull in for the rotation. Do no think about going around and hopping on the other foot. You have to think of jumping up first and then letting your other foot catch the jumping leg and then think of landing position in order to land the jump. You are like 3 inches off the ice. You need to take the jump upward by a foot. You need take off and landing positions and to stop breaking at the waist and looking down. The timing is also off. You have to set up the jump. Also, a professional needs to look at your skating equipment and evaluate whether it is holding you back and whether you have been fitted correctly. You had the potential, however, you probably needed a different coach.

    I’m 25 years old and I started taking group lessons about 8 months ago and have taken a few short private lessons. I love ice skating but it’s definitely tough. I feel like most times it’s just me getting in my own head and I get too scared of falling, so I gotta keep trying to push myself and stop thinking like that.
    It’ll be a full year ice skating in August 16th, so I hope by then I can at least do one basic jump, that’s my goal! 😁⛸️
