A quick tip I made a plywood frame 3/4”x3” high maybe 12”x12” square and stapled 1/4” wire mesh to one side of the plywood and I sift my pellets before I dump them in the hopper. It drastically cuts down on the amount of sawdust. I made the mistake of dumping directly into the hopper from the bag and my auger jammed up.
The new timberline 850 has some weird screen type thing in the pellet hopper. WHICH MAKES IT A PAIN IN THE REAR TO CHANGE PELLETS OUT! I'm removing it though.
I see your pellet hopper doesn't have a metal cage. I just purchased the Ironwood 650 and it had a metal "honeycomb" cage close to the top. Can I take that out? I emptied the hopper and needed a paintbrush to help push the pellets out. Not even sure what it's for.
Hi Gregory, I took it off for ease of cleaning and showing how we get done into the hopper. Its a guard meant to keep things (and hands) from betting into the auger. We put it back in after the video. Thanks for watching, Chef Jason
I was thinking about leaving mine out. I change pellet types for almost every cook. I did find the Ace bucket with the airtight unscrew lid works great for storage.
Doesn't affect cook at all, the foil is simply to make clean-up non-existent. Do the foil so you aren't having to scrub. I've even started putting foil inside the drip bucket too

I have never added my guard back in. It was a great decision
Next episode go over all the "ifs"
What "if" the auger is loose.
What "if" there's buildup in the auger
Etc...
Hi Shane, Great idea thank you!
Was waiting for a joke the whole time
How about aluminum foil on the drip pan... good idea or not. I've read different opinions. Thoughts?
Hi Brian, foil works great. I use heavy duty foil and actually will do a double layer. Foil or Liners will get the job done. Chef Jason
