Actually, winter time is the best time to work on such projects. Sometimes, it's just a matter of figuring out "where to start". She sounds good for sitting around. Looking forward to seeing you get this combine back up and running again. Cheers :)
We have a oliver 33 combine, all original in working condition, safely tucked away. Used mostly for oats. Super fun to play with. Only thing lacking is power and a cab. Has a 12ft head . We only topped the oats or took 8ft swaths. And with no cab, dads eyes would be blood shot for days! And wow, dirty and itchy. Still a neat outfit despite that. 👌
Good to see things moving again. I got a good laugh out of your comments like “oh this isn’t good….bye bye tree” and “what your gonna want to do is pile all your stuff in the work area”
We had a MM 4296 in the late 70's and early 80's This video brought about alot of memories. I didn't see alot of the longer bin unloading augers then, it would have nice to unload with.
my dads uncle had a 7700 jd that after they figured out a massive radiator setup that had a fan was driven off the chopper belt to keep it cool they dropped a 502 big block winston cup motor they bought from a wrecked racecar at MIS into with 8 individual pipes sticking straight up and could be heard on the other side of the county
Had a 318 2bbl in a '66 Dodge Coronet 500. The car I owned when I got married and the car my wife used to learn to drive. They were solid engines. My Dad and I had to pull the Chrysler Industrial 6 cyl out of the Massey Harris 80 special twice in 2 years because he wouldn't buy a rain cap for the exhaust pipe and rain got into it and froze the engine. That engine was transverse mounted between the drive wheels and was a project just to get to it even more to pull it. You've got enough to do on that combine to keep you happily wrenching all the way to retirement 😆
The 318 in your old Coronet was the poly head. In 67 the 318 became an LA engine like the 273, 340, and 360. The old poly heads made good power between 2 and 4000 rpms but those were really hard to do any porting for making a hotrod. The LA 318 was a sleeper. You could make some real power out of them but they were usually overlooked and underestimated.
Boy am I relieved, yet a little concerned that you make the same "full figured fella" noises that I do try to squeeze into places that I probably shouldn't be. 🤣
Looks like a lot of work is getting the combine going again. I was pretty sure we were going to get some barnyard animal sounds while you were working on the combine. Nice job getting it running again. Thanks Michael
At least you didnt have to replace every thing in the ignition system like I did to get it running , Oh lets not forget the fuel pump and fuel filters ! Maybe I should get you to come over and apply some of your love on my old Dodge dump truck to get her to fire up that easy ! Great work Ross ! Bandit
@@banditfarmer1900 boy I’m not really sure. I was thinking the 542 was a different style more along the lines of the 430-431. But I can’t say for sure. Down here all you saw was 525, 535, and 545s
@@rosstheoliverman After looking at a 542 and a 5542 they look a lot like a 545 as far as the machine goes in the cylinder shaker bed and straw walkers. I have some parts for Oliver/White combines you might be interested in and a piece or two of equipment I know you would like ! LOL Ask Craig about some of the goodies I have . LOL Bandit
I'm a Chrysler dude I got a 92 Dodge Ram 360 and I grew up racing Chrysler cars I love them I think they're the best V8 engine reliability and durability you could run the crap out of them they'll still run and when Chryslers in the 60s 70s 80s up into the 90s made RVs and they had a good 440 in them but I do love the 318s they didn't build the RVs but they had Chrysler drivetrains in them most of the RVs back in the day good video can't wait to see them in the field hopefully
@@rosstheolivermanunfortunately after the 1978 guberment load to Chrysler, one of provisions was they were required to scrape the tooling for the big block 400 and 440. I believe it put Dodge trucks at a huge disadvantage against GM and Ford until the Cummins 12 valve nine years later. I'd pick a 440 in a truck any day over the 454. They had more low end power.
I loved this video! Gives me the gumsion to wake up my old IH 303. Pretty much the same story as yours. Used it years ago, and then it was parked in the shed. It's been about 15 years since it last ran. My problem is there was a half tank of fuel left in it years ago. How I have a beautiful tank full of rust! That will definitely be my starting point. Thanks for the videos. They're always very entertaining!!
For projects like this one where you are cranking the engine alot while troubleshooting, is there a big jumper pack or something you could use so you dont drain the battery? Outside of the normal jumper packs from rural king or something similar.
Omg you just took me back 😭. We have two 545 in the old lean too building I believe with the same corn head duct tape seat , yes pain in the unloading auger was a donkey noise . I can see my dad n grandpa sitting in there harvesting. Sorry tears running. Old 318 started right up lol . I bet yours have set for 30 years or more, many junk guys have wanted to bye for scrap wish you was closer . Bet I have the parts you need . Lots of memories. From turkey creek farms be safe n thankful
I have the same memories with this machine. I could never see it go to scrap. Before you ever send them to the scrap get a hold of me. I never mind having extra parts on hand.
After the 500 series they had a 5555 which is more along the styling of the later combines. Then they went to the 7600 and the 7800 and then into the whites.
Hey Ross,,,go ahead, tear it up. Your the one guy who can fix it.
🤣 Thanks!
Good to see old iron running
Thanks John!
Dad had a 318 Chrysler in his White 7300. Great engine, no problems. Good video Ross...keep em' coming!
Thanks Larry!

I’ve always thought it would be neat to have one of those combines from that era. They were truly built by Oliver

proud to hear it run

Glad you enjoyed it Merlin!
Those 318's always were a sweat heart, Had one in a 7600 that was straight piped.
My grandfather had the 7600 with straight pipe 318 also.
It’s always been a good running engine

Appreciate the video and the VGG reference. Looking forward to seeing it back in the field.
Thanks Glen! I was hoping to get it out there this year but I’m probably not gonna make it.

Grandfather had a 545 and a 7600. Lived in Central Illinois.
It’s hard to believe that the 545 was the big horse at one time. Now it just looks like a toy compared to the new stuff.
Had massey super 92, allis all crop and a minnieapolis moline uni harvester we picked corn with. Some good times.

The struggle is real 🤣
Love your comments from Wisconsin keep it up
Glad you got it started and hope it will soon be field-ready.
Thanks Charlie! I’m excited to use it again but it will probably be next year
The 318 is one of MOPAR’s finest👍👍
It’s been very reliable for sure.
Great job like your funny comet's when your working on the combine like make sure to cover the engine in gas so when it back fires 🔥🔥 have a great day
Thanks! I’m glad people are enjoying the videos!
I hope you can get it up and running! Some repairs are servicing, be ready to work again! 👍🏻👋🇺🇸✌️
I think I’ve got almost all the parts tracked down. Now I just have to pry the money out of my wallet 😭😭😭

Good job Ross!! I’m for you getting it back in the field.
I would love to try it this year but I’m afraid I’m not going to make it. But hopefully it will be ready for next year!!

Hanging onto the machines of the past comes at a cost. Looks like to me your ready to pay, labor and parts. Hope you can keep the old girl alive.
I’ve got a whole list of stuff I want to get. It’s probably more than what the combine would sell for on an auction 🤣
Man your collection gets me so ready to buy another tractor ha ha I'm up to 3 currently a massey Harris 22 allis chalmers b ,allis chalmers g
I’m glad to hear that! Part of my RUclips journey was hoping to inspire other people to get their projects going!

They’re pretty tough engines!
@@rosstheoliverman yes they are they were a good machine until j.i. case got out of their combine division
@@rosstheoliverman yes they are and looking at them this is no difference in them they were the two best combines anybody could come up with
Both of them are so simple to work on and don't take much if you can get the parts
Oliver and case made knew what a farmer needed

If you’re going to get one, get a good quality one. I usually just quit and charge the battery or jump it with my pickup.

Great video as always. Is that a starter weight on the rear axle?
Yes the factory combine weights were a flat plate bolted to the axle with two starter weights bolted to it.
Is that Purex a detergent motor oil?
Full detergent motor oil. I think it’s in the Motor medic line of products. Guaranteed to keep the engine squeaky clean.
Great video! Is there a white combine vidoe next?or maybe I was seeing things on the RUclips shorts thing
Yes, the 7300 will be in an upcoming video
Did Oliver build their own combines or were they a Claas?
They were built by Cockshutt in Canada
Nice old combine, so they made 525,535,545,then where it go from here and what was the difference between them .just curious

That’s possible. I think my biggest trouble was the belt being wore out
