I think the reason the guitar is coming through is because it was a live preference in a hallway, so the sound from the amp was coming through his lovelier mic also
That definitely would’ve happened but that’s not a factor with this….. it would separate vocals from music even if they were all recorded on the same microphone…..it’s a spectral analysis of formants to identify the parts. Does that make sense?

Cool i loved this Michael - of course- this is the stuff that excites me 😂😂 I have used Spectral Layers as a stand alone program but I don’t have Cubase. My favourite program for separation is Demix Pro as it gives you vocals, drums, guitar, piano, strings and a residual. You can also separate background vocals from lead- I believe it’s the only software that does this, it’s not always great though and you obviously have to know your shit EQ wise and use some noise reducing plugins to get them half decent. I then take those stems from Demix and load them into Logic Pro for remixing. Another really cool trick you may know about- if you don’t want to separate but just want to do a nice remaster is to use parallel compression- so you send the track to a bus and cut out the highs and lows via EQ then increase the dynamics in the range of the vocal and mix that in with the main master track. It allows you to bring the vocals out in a mix where they may be getting drowned. There are so many plugins with presets though- I subscribe to the Waves audio plugins and there are just thousands of plugins to play with, the best waste of time ever!

Excellent concept Michael, with briliant analysis, coupled to such a thought provoking and respectful playback of the vocal depths hidden in plain sight within Ren and Chinchilla's Chalk Outlines. I want to thank as this made things more apparent that were, for me at least, somewhat masked in the full live video. In particularl the degree of softness in tone and volume at points, seemingly used so artfully as a counter balance to the louder section, providing both relief and driving the story forward. Chinchilla's opening intro volume, for example, is so much quieter than Ren's and almost half to a third that of Ren's Intro ending. Giving such a dynamic contrast that seems to intentionally reflect the medical condition/status Chinchilla's is portraying in the performance by way of character introduction.
The amount of vocal variation from both artists is outstanding, not only as it would be used in an typical song to keep things interesting but using their vocal approach in expressing the lyrics to provide insight to the characters they are portraying and their respective stories. Ren so skillfully employs vocal techniques throughout - modulating tone, volume and vibrator to emphasise the story, for example, using portamento style slide on 'new' in the new habit phrase like a performance suggestion of gaining a rush at these points. Chinchilla similarly adeptly and purposely adding stylistic vocal modification to reflect the meaning of the character she is portraying; the high operatic section a reflection of the despair and anxiety of the character being portrayed. The build in the song during the a capella section, reflecting the growing desperation of the characters, to what seem a pure outburst of anger and frustration at the situation of having to become so dulled in order to be alive during the belting section, only then to so suddenly drop to such a rueful and contemplative outro sound. Ren and Chinchilla's compositional genius pure and yet not so simple.
Vocally both artists also seem to be soncially filling in for the varied instrumentation that was present in the original studio version. The soundscape itself makes it seems as if there are actually four singers present - Ren and Chinchilla and their respective reverb echo shadow outlines (maybe a deliberate sonic metaphore) - that when harmonising, seems to mirror the vocal doubling effects used in the original studio version. Chinchilla deliberately seems to sing slightly behind Ren at times to match his volume and further use the echo to fill the sound in (again suggestive of the studio version's overdubbing), and also trails after Ren's vocal has completed at the end of verses with a fast vibrato that actually seems to match Ren's guitar playing at these points providing a sense of fuller instrumentation being present.
The live version of Chalk Outlines seems not to be simply a song but a full performance telling a story throughtout - lyrically, vocally and sonically; one that is yet more enhanced by the visual physical story telling element performed. The complete storytelling package of characterisation, situation, motives, interactions and emotions presented in such an artful way.

I guess I obsess over Ren's vocals so much that I take it for granted anyone who loves this song has also heard all the subtle nuances in the performance... but that's not to say that isolating the vocal track wasn't something incredibly special, nor that you didn't make an interesting video out of it! Chalk Outlines is frequently the Ren song I choose as my #1 outside of Hi Ren (& I always phrase it that way no matter which track has claimed the #2 spot... it's not #2, it's "my #1 outside if Hi Ren" lol) ... anyways, point being that I've listened to this one A LOT a lot, lol.
I'm glad people are getting to examine the tiny details of these incredible vocals! The track is SO worth it!
I bet How to Be Me would be incredible too, but the vocals are so much more bare on that one already (... I'm not saying don't do it, I'm not saying there's no point; I'm quite certain we'd all be here with bells on, to watch that video!)

Yo Mike, Still alive here. Yeah interesting listening to isolated vocals like that. I did something similar with a Jimmy Sommerville song a while back. All those small nuances and room sound that come through really give you an appreciation of what they are actually doing. There's a few sites now that allow you to isolate tracks, with no technical ability whatsoever. I did a quick google search and came up with half a dozen. They aren't bad either. Unfortunately I can't remember which one I settled on. Great song to do it on too. By far my favourite Ren song. Stay cool my friend.

Yo. I would love to see this done with Romain's song Time After Time (live version) because his vocals could be compared to the ending solo guitar section. It seems like the guitar is singing the vocal line. But since it's guitar and vocals it may not separate well?

I like this exploration, Mike. Trouble is, I am not at all familiar with how these tracking apps illustrate what’s going on. Is one of the tracks one voice, the other, the other person’s? I notice they are very similar but not the same. And when only one of them is singing, why do two tracks still show? A beginner explanation would help a newbie. Indeed, I find this quite fascinating.
Music is recorded in stereo. We are seeing the left and right audio channels which could be carrying one or both voices at different times depending on how the track is mixed.
