    The parent idea is totally genius and the only true reason this will make a real difference for generations to come!!!! All the parents ever want for their smart child is the simple chance of a good job so they can independently provide for that smart child with pride. These smart kids don't just happen by accident, they happen because they have one person who truly believes in them and motivates them every day normally during the most challenging of days. I hope they all grab this lifeline and to the "wonderful human" who is footing the bill for all of this YOU ARE AN ANGEL!

    The mere fact that low income kids are being given these opportunities are overwhelming in scope but throw in the fact that their parent/s have this same opportunity is going to change the landscape for generations to come!

      The gesture is wonderful. Now let's take attrition into account. Let's see 60min report on these lives 5yr from now and the statistics of who got through college both students and parents. Great program. Now I want to see how effective it is.

      I'm dumb, how is sending the parents of college age children to school going to help break the cycle of poverty when the cycle has allready "passed by" the parents? The only way I could see it is if it was college students with kids and sending them and in the future their kids to college for free.

      @@chestnut4860 the fact is that, when the youngsters get an education and a good job, the cycle is broken. Their children will reap the benefit of that. So that part should take care of itself. By sending parents who never got the opportunity, the cycle is “repaired” in that these parents were caught in the cycle and can now not only receive an education, but hopefully influence others, employ others and in turn create a way for others in their own community to break the cycle. Without education, most of us do not stand a chance. The Bill Gates of the world who are simply genius or lucky are few. Education is the key to breaking poverty especially in this day and age

    These days going to college is relearning what we should have learned in HS. If these kids don’t have strong support from their parents(s) their chances of success is a lot lower. It may take a couple of generations to work through to those values. Do it for your children and grand children.

    I had a 3.6 high school GPA but had to go to community college cause i didnt have access to the internet.
    Im now in crippling debt Because the humans that came before me didn't have access to this information or system so it couldn't help me navigate through it.
    I'm not trying to blame my parents I just grew up poor so I couldn't afford to go on the Internet and Google search scholarships and grants because I simply didn't have access to it nor did I have anybody around to mentor me.
    Im glad theres things being put in place so that everybody doesn't have to suffer the same as the people in the past.

      Too many students enrolled at Skyline for a program like this. I could be wrong - but I think they are focused on magnet schools whose enrollment consists of higher caliber students from public high schools. If you are indeed a Skyline student - Then you likely already know not all your classmates are as motivated to continue their educations as you seem to be. I hope you and every one around you that wants to attend college has the ability to do so.

    • @t-and-p
      @t-and-p 2 года назад +6

      Because it's about using education and knowledge to lift an entire family out of poverty. Besides, the parents of high schoolers aren't passed it! Most of these parents still have a long working life left, and time to set up a good career, plan for retirement, and create generational wealth to hand down/pay for the care they may need later in life.
      If you only help the child, your chances of breaking the poverty cycle are small. That's because not everyone who goes to college will become a millionaire - many will get a job at a professional level (nurse, doctor, lawyer, etc). They will be raised out of poverty, but only just, so what happens when their parent needs help (nursing care, home adjustments as they age, or just general support because they have nothing)? All the extra the child has accrued will be spent on helping their parent, leaving the child back at square one - back in poverty. Helping two generations grow stronger helps to protect that family against losing everything so easily.
      Also, ever heard the phrase "the youth can't be what the youth can't see"? When you're born into poverty, you often don't believe that certain things are possible for you - despite being more than capable (like the parent in the video - she's more than capable of being a real estate agent, education won't give her intelligence, but didn't think she could achieve that goal because she lacked the knowledge and self belief that education provides). When you see that someone from your background - someone like you - can achieve their dreams, it makes yours feel more attainable. Helping a parent succeed helps their other children to succeed, as well as other nephews, nieces, and neighbours who are all watching.
      Hope that helps explain it 👍

      @Chestnut. The parents of high schoolers also have younger children as well. Perhaps, once the parents graduate from college, they can find better jobs and move to a more safe area. The gangs are rampant in Chicago, just sitting in one's house there are people each year killed by stray bullets.
