And the same thing is implied by night wolf’s great spirit when he complains in pain and the dialog stating that the link they both share is weakened because the link is to the SAME diety, and not two different versions that exist concurrently, because they can’t. If they could, the scenes literally would not exist.
The creators love setting up plots that start out interesting and then completing rebooting everything, they're scared to take risks dating back to the ps2 era games.

It would’ve been cool if they would’ve directly ported the past versions of the characters from the games they debuted in. Like if MK9 Nightwolf was in MK11 with the same outfit, design, etc. Obviously update the graphics to the same resolution as the newer game but leave the overall design & characteristics of the characters the same. Kinda like the teen titans vs teen titans go special. The original teen titans characters were brought right into the titans go universe looking exactly how they did in the original show but with the higher quality graphics. Really helped to display the difference between the two universes and make for some interesting visuals. Aside from maybe the outfits you wouldn’t even be able to tell that the past characters are supposed to be from MKX, MK9 etc. because they have the same exact design as the present characters just with different clothes

These physical injuries carry over to both the past and present characters like Kano, yet the act of meeting their future selves doesn’t effect anything, hell the act of merging time should have greatly effected the present, stuff like that

He believed raiden knew because he was spiteful, but really, raiden just didn’t think, for some reason, that changing the immediate history of liu kang fighting Kahn to kung Lao would allow Lao to be killed decades before Armageddon was supposed to happen. But he never KNEW Lao would die after winning because the event straight up did not happen canonically in the original mk1

People keep pissing on the story mode because the part where they hit their past selves is inconsistent with kano's future and past fight, in all fights where both the past and future fought the only time the future version got injured was when a long term injured happened (for example: johnny's bullet scar, kano's several heavy blows and death from sonya). Maybe its not the immediate hit that affects the future self but only hits that could result in long term injuries.
This is exactly the implication and assertion and is precisely why when shooting past Kano in the head, the new one died too. Only, he turned to sand because he could no longer physically exist at that point in time because time was changed such that he had always died decades earlier and thus: became what he would have been anyway if the past Kano normally died at that point, part of the earth.
Hold on I just realized something. Mk 2 was happening before the past counterparts appeared and appeared after kung loa defeated Shang tsung and Quan chi so wouldn’t jax not have his robotic arms because I’m pretty sure Sonya and Jax were still in the island when ermac ripped them off so how come he has them now? We don’t see them until Mk 3 (I think).

When NRS introduced time travelling, I kinda wished that they use character's Midway counterparts instead of MK9

What happened to future raiden?
For some reason, 2 raidens can't exist at the same place at the same time. So when past raiden came to the future, future raiden ceased to exist.
Also, if I remember right, raiden said because he is a god, he may be affected by time differently.

Dark Raiden was still an Elder God so that he would be erased temporarily, but all his memory was combined with his past self.
