omg!! so frustrated for the past 5hrs because my mic wasnt working and then i saw this video. kudos to u!! heaven-sent indeed.
So crazy to me that I spent all this money on a mac and had to do this. However, this cheap trick did work. Thank you for making this video!
I am a new youtuber and literally just bought my Rode Mic 2 days ago. Glad I found this video before buying a "Mac specific" mic and wasting money. Thanks for this video! Mabuhay!
Well explained. My question is, why can't I hear my microphone from the MacBook speakers? There is no output from the microphone, yet the speakers will work when RUclips is running. Do I need a splitter as you showed?
just got back from Fry's with the same splitter, at first it didin't work on my MA but worked on my iphone 6. I was gonna return it in the morning but I found this video! thank you so much! it's working now!
easily the highest production value tutorial ive seen
Very well explained, congratulations! Does it also work in the rode video micro? The one you used in the video is the rode video mic go isn't it?
Yup. It has a link from the description.
i know Im kinda randomly asking but does anyone know of a good website to stream new tv shows online ?
@Roy Jacoby Flixportal =)
@Eliseo Mustafa Thank you, signed up and it seems to work =) I really appreciate it!!
@Roy Jacoby glad I could help :D
This video saved my life. THANK YOU! It kept me from ordering an adapter on Amazon. And I didn’t have to do a dual connection with a headset. It recorded perfectly without it.
Man you are great , all is so detailed not omitting a word
Hi Ron... your video really helps... thank you... question.. can you hear music from your Heaphones/Speakers at the same time as using your mic with this set-up?
Thank you so much. One question, What camera and lens do you use? Its awsome.
WOW! Ive watched probably 10 videos on this now and this is the only one that helped solve my issue!!!!!!!!!!
Same! :) Well done! Thank you.
Wow I just watched 3 other videos and nothing showed up in sound input -that trick of having rode go and headphone jack and then plug into mac made them show up in sound input and output.. thanks heaps :)
THANK YOU SO MUCH! I am a newbie to recording and finding your video saved me all kinds of time, $, and frustration! God bless you!
You’re welcome! 🙏🏼
Thanks brother, I've just got a New MacBook Pro 2019, and have the TRS splitter and have been dumbfounded for a few days as to why it doesn't work. Had no idea apple changed to another new connecter TRRS ! You Rock! really appreciate
Thank you very much! I could not work out why the splitter wasn't working - you have explained it all! Much appreciated.
Thanks for the tip it does work when we put the external microphone and the heaphone at the same time. Thanks again
Hi, great video! Will this work for the wireless Lenso Mic? Thank you.
I am struggling to film videos for my distance learning kids. The internal mike is not enough. I did a quick search and picked your video. Apparently according to the comments below I lucked out. I'm going to order this adapter right away.
I just got that and worked for me,
Brilliant! Clear and very helpful. What a relief to find this video. Well done!
Great video. Additionally to connecting the mic and wired headphones, can you also connect airpods at the same time?
Excellent explanation of a tricky process.
I cannot thank you enough for showing us how to do it - I've been trying to solve this problem for ages :)! Now it finally works :)!
Thank you for the video (and the nice music in the background). I only have these regular white Mac headphones as you showed 1:55 in your video. Can I listen to the audio the microphone brings in on these headphones? So I can check the sound via them?
Intuitive explanations Ron. Thanks a bunch. I figured my boom mic wasn't working for some simple reason. Would it be safe to assume that connecting external speakers to the headphone side of the jack would work the same way as headphones would?
Thanks man. I’m just trying to get an as Pro as possible result without spending any dollars. So it’s great to see ways to make use of what I have!

Thanks for sharing this. Very helpful. I have both adaptors. It was working. Now the setup is no longer working and I've tried two mics.
same
Thanks! It was too clear the way you explained the solución
Thank you, Ron! I got the TRRS plug and the two adaptors for the mic and headsets and it actually recognizes the mic but no sound yet, I tried two different mics and that doesn't seem to be the problem. Any recommendation? I'd appreciate it!
Thanks, this is just what I was looking for.
Thanks! I think I will mostly be using my mic for weekly Zoom meetings but will use it for recording a video once in awhile. I will probably have to set up some external speakers as this set up disables the internal speaker on my laptop.
You’re welcome! 🙏🏼
Godsend! Our church will be so happy! Salamat!
Thank you, Ron! Ron Rocks!
Will it be possible to have a solution other than connecting a headphone - can we for example use a jumper with resistor ?
Super useful, just what I needed!
Thanks for this. One further tip... you need to plug the headphones and the mic into the adapter BEFORE you plug the adapter into the Mac’s port. Plugging them in afterwards does not work.
This tip saved me! Thank you so much!
The effectiveness of this solution will, seemingly, be dependent on what model of Macbook you have. I have an older MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) and this solution does not work for my setup. I have the splitter cable (TRRS male to 2xTRS female). Using a Rode Wireless Go microphone. No matter what order I plug cables in and no matter if the headphones are TTRS or TRS, I get no detection of an external microphone within the Macbook. I have read that internal CPU hardware may present an impedance issue whereby the proper impedance load of certain microphones will not be detected by the OS when an external microphone is connected this way.
I am using an identical Macbook (16G RAM) and a Takstar shotgun mic and this is working just fine.
same here, it's not working
Thank you! You explained it so simply and well.
Hi Ron
I am facing the same issue but I have just one question - What is the port of your headphone is it TRS(3 sections) only like a mic?
Because I have a mic with TRS (3 sections) and headphones with TRRS (4 sections), for me my macbook air 2020 is not recognising the external device.
dude clear explanation, hope it solves my mic issues in iMac.
This works intermittently for me. I have the same connector, same headphone, and a rode video mic pro+. Occasionally when I do this it switches to external, other times it stays internal. I can't find the magic combination to get it to work on the first try. Currently sitting here unplugging and replugging hoping it'll switch over...
same
same for me
Me too.
hey, did you ever figure out this problem? i’m having the same problem...
Thank you, Ron
is this just for microphones because I have my speakers connected to my Macbook pro 2015 version on a 3.5 TRS headjack and it works.
salamat po for this do you recommend a mic I can use to do my zoom online zumba classes not too expensive enough for them to hear me :)
Yo. Great vid man. You definitely helped me get my external mic working! Thanks
it does not work for me.... my macbook pro does not recognize the mic only the headphone. can yomeone help me?
Oh my....... This video saved my life..........
Hey Ron, thanks for your clear and to the point explanation. It helped clear up my issue. Much Appreciated! Tom
Exactly what I was looking for! Salamat po!
You’re welcome kaibigan! 🙏🏼
Still didn't work on mine. I have a similar Røde mic and TRRS splitter... still nothing happend :-(.
Doesn’t work for me either.
Thanks for the tips because I have them all but don’t know to use them
This was very helpful. thank you so very much! :)
You safe my life thanks so much!
But my voice sounds like stereo even i select mono in Audacity, do you know how to set this?
It sounds right and should work, but I still couldn't make it work on my desktop iMac Retina.
Thank you, was struggling with this one
Many thanks. Works a treat
Thank you! I have the exact mic & I thought it would only work attached to my camera. I watched this video and went & bought the jack for $9 and it works great now plugged into my Mac with Audition recording. You saved me $250 cuz now I dont have to buy a USB mic for my podcast.
Thank you so much! that really helped!!
You’re welcome!🙏🏼😊
you also can get a usb to 2 aux it will work
Dude ! Thank you !
why is the connected microphone recognized as an external microphone + external headphones?
I do the same but I get the problem, when I connect only the microphone, the macbook automatically switches to "external headphones" even though they are not connected.
So... both are need connected first on the adapter before i connect the adapter to the Macbook.... im alright?
Good presentation, but this still doesn't make my mic work on my MacBook Pro. :-(
(new Takstar mic, MacBook pro 2014)
Well done great advice
Sorry , it doesn’t work for me. I have all the right adapters and did all the right steps. No external mic recognized
It deosnt seem to work with Iphone TRRS headphones plugged into that end - Doe the headphones that plug into the adapter need to be TRS as well as the TRS mic?
I have a different issue - if I plug my Rode Video Go mic into my 2020 MacBook Pro using only the trrs cable that comes with the mic, my MacBook actually detects it as an external mic - only the signal from the mic is dead. I assume it’s not getting power from the Mac. Is this a different issue or do you think the jack splitter your using will solve the issue?
Do you have any idea if this adaptor would work for a Sennheiser MKH 416-P48U3? That Sennheiser needs 48V phantom power as it is not battery operated. I'm trying to figure out how to connect it to my macbook pro. Thanks!
Hi! this is great! thank you.
You’re welcome! 🙏🏼
salamat po monong! I couldnt figure this out this helped me.
Doesn't work for me... I have a rode pro mic, bought the adapter and followed his instructions but nothing...
Thanks for the video😍
Thank you!
FINALY the right solution, explained why it's so hard to connect a mic to a MacBook Pro. THANKS!!
I have been told 5 different fixes for this so far on RUclips. No one says when it will not work. This did not work for me. I am starting to think it is my headphones. What kind of headphones do work?
Thanks for your information
hello, can you help me understanding what i need to buy? On amazon i have found 2 adapters with a TRRS male jack. One works only with TRS plugged in both the female IN and the other works wiht only TRRS plugged in both the female IN. I'm a bit confused I have TRS headphones and TRRS mic. what i'm supposed to buy? many thanks
Hi! I have a wireless microphone Sony brand, Can I do the same with that mic? the reference is
ECM-W2BT, Thanks!
I have a Taskar mic and the adaptor to insert to my MacBook but it won't recognize it 😭😭😭 I wish there was another video
same
Hi, I did all the steps but sadly it didn't work for me. Anyone knows why? I used the TRRS (male) splitter and connect my TRS headphone and microphone. My headphone was detected, but not with the microphone.
me too, do you find any solution?
I got so hopeful, but it’s still not working for me :( Not even at the guy at Apple Store knew how to help me. Any ideas?
Why do you need a headphone jack connected to it?
Hi Ron, i recently bought a rode videomic pro+ and i cant seem to be able to access it through my PC..
I want to use this mic to do some recordings/ streaming at home and i watched your video but im using windows .. Where do i get the adapter? Can you advice?
I'm currently having the same issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated
@@JaimeNelson I have the same issue with videomic pro +
Thanks bro. Problem solved!!
I have same issue but with USB port from the mic.
can I use wireless earbuds for this ??
I tried that pal, did not work for me. Thank you all the same.
Me either. Maybe I don’t have fancy headphones like he does?
Thank you very much!
@2:40 My buddy met a couple of female Jacks in Angeles City.
i bought same connector and used in imac. but not working
I won't work for me :( I have a TRS mic and TRS headphones connected to the TRRS adaptor, but nothing.
Thanks!!!!!! it works out perfectly!!
doesn't always work.
I have a mic with mono jack (only two contacts) and it doesn't work this way 😕
Perfect, Thank you
i have a 2 cables, a TRS and TRS specificall for cameras and 2nd cable is a TRS > TRRS and works fine on my iPhone but when i connect the same cable to my Macbook using the TRS (connected to the external mic) > TRRS male to Macbook 3.5mm port - it does not work. do i still need to get a TRRS splitter?
Did not work with my mac pro.
edzacchery the information I was looking for. Mabuhay kudos & kipidup.
Thank you but Why is mine not working 😭😭😭
Me either.
