8 Great JRPGs To Play During Winter or Around Christmas!

- The winter and gaming go hand in hand together considering it's the perfect time to just stay inside and game the day away, and what better way to set the mood right than to play some winter-themed JRPGs? Not that there are a lot of those specifically out there, but there are some that we believe are better suited for a winter playthrough than others in the genre. For example as much as we love Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy X, those certainly feel more like games to play during the summer rather than winter. So with that said, we wanted to make a list of 8 Great JRPGs To Play During Winter or Around Christmas for others to looking to good in the winter mood or holiday spirit.

Not every year, but my favorite videogames to play whenever I go home for Christmas are Parasite Eve, Super Mario World and Secret of Mana.
I don't play them every year but usually every few years.
Oddly enough my favorite games for Christmas time were always Resident Evil games (up to #4.) For years I'd get a Resident Evil game around that time of year and play with friends. Code Veronica especially is good because of the snowy prison location at the beginning.
Valkyria Chronicles 4 is an Anime WW1 style game takes place durin the fall and Winter. Hevay Snow And winter game mechanics. Turn Based 3D Strategy Game similar to Fire Emblem or XCom but you move your units in REAL TIME and Take aim yourself.
I’ve played a couple Valkyria Chronicles games before and actually own the 4th one but haven’t gotten around to playing it yet unfortunately. Sounds like I should have though given it seems pretty fitting for this list! Damn. I really liked the first one, it had real unique gameplay that I hadn’t ever seen another system exactly like it. Need to go back and revisit the rest of the series
I really recommend the series! I prefer generally 4 to 1, although 1 still is probably the better starting point
Code name steam on 3ds is a very similar game which I also recommend.
I know its not a huge part of the game but whenever I think of winter in a JRPG I think Secret of Mana

I actually played it for the first time during Christmas in 1998. The feeeeels.
Lost Odyssey is one of my all time favorite RPGs. I have it on my Xbox One X and am taking my time with it. So good...
I think I remember reading some reviews at the time of its release for the 360 that if you didn't have a high def tv it was really hard to read the game text. Happy to see all these old games are on the new gen consoles.

Love the Lost Odyssey choice. FYI it’s playable on Xbox One, Series S, and Series X via backwards compatibility.
Ah damn you’re right! Last Xbox system I had was the 360 so I completely forgot about the backwards compatibility on the newer ones. Thanks for pointing that out.

Another great game/series for Xmas is Animal Crossing. The original on GC and the Wii one were staples for me and my friends growing up. Lots of stuff to do in the town for the Holidays, laying traps outside friends houses, snowmen to build... Good times

There is one Christmas themed RPG I have on Switch. It's Cthulhu Saves Christmas. Cthulhu has been recruited to rescue Santa Claus.
@winter/christmass time i always played a megamn till i beat it or play final fantasy 6 (or 3) the music and start ofthe 16bit version indeed always reminds me of christmass or winter (thought i was the only one)

Honestly, I’m glad this was at least a unique list, even if i don’t agree with some of it.
I have a soft spot for Ni No Kuni being it was the last game my dad got me Christmas 2013 well along with Brave Story on PSP..
Dragon Quest VIII also reminds of Christmas being I got it Christmas Eve 2006.. And, it does have some wintry areas.. Maybe we could also lump in Chrono Trigger too!?
