Took me 18 years(!) to finish my '76 Gran Fury police car. Then I sold it. At a loss. I've done several other cars. That one though was my "Problem child". Despite the problems, I'm glad I persevered and finished it. That Cadillac is an icon. Hope you stick with it. Gorgeous car.

Thanks for sharing your story! Yeah, I've had down times but never seriously thought about bailing on it. It does seem like every time I get close to having enough dough for the paint and body something else comes up, either with it or another car, and I'm back to "maybe next year." I've already got way more $$$ in it than it's worth but I'm not into the car hobby to make money.

If you don't teach and learn about early 50s to 60s Cadillacs , you will be repairing it all the time. Believe it or not they're easy to repair. These cars are very reliable if you maintain them, maintenance is the key to these cars. If something is worn replace it don't ignore it at all.If you do this they are very reliable in fact the 50 Cadillacs are the most reliable of them all 👍

I hope to have more time to learn to work on these old cars after my kids are grown and I've retired. Wish I'd taken shop class in high school instead of band.

A 1959 has a four-speed automatic transmission hydromatic is its name.
They are not a torque converter transmission ,they are they are hydraulic fluid coupling transmission. The hydraulic fluid coupling transmission is a smoother shift changing transmission of them all that's why Cadillac used them.+ They can handle a lot of torque 👍

Hydramatics were the first American automatic transmissions, I think they first appeared in the early 40s. By 1959 they had been improved upon in a number of ways. Mine lasted 63 years so I guess they did something right.

What kind of transmission does a 59 have?

It has the original transmission, which is the second generation GM hydramatic. Not very common and not easy to find anyone willing to rebuild one. My transmission guy says after doing this one he'll never touch another.
