- The Lich returns! This was an excellent episode where Fern’s insecurities fester and lead him toward a villainous path, while Sweet P defies his legacy and instead rises up to be a hero. The most juicy part of the episode for me was the Lich claiming he is the last scholar of Golb - what does that entail, and could it mean we will see Golb in the concluding arc of Adventure Time? I can’t wait to find out!

I don't think so. They made a big deal with the horns, which Billy didn't have. Plus when LichBilly was revealed it seemed that it was just Billy's skin.
If that's true, it would be an interesting twist that Sweet P is the embodiment of Billy, The Lich, Good, and Evil.
When the Lich says "last scholar of Golb" I think he means a metaphorical way, in that Golb is the god of destruction itself, which the Lich is aiming to be like, so it's not that they're directly connected. So he's saying he's got destruction down to an art
Golb is the god of destructive chaos, entropy. When last life goes extinct, it'll be the end of meaning. So, when Lich fulfills his goal, it'll be the last meaningful bit of entropy. He's the last scholar because he's the last act that can be studied.

That is pure order, the beginning the middle, the end. For golb to end existence is for him to complete the cycle, to create order.

When Fern ends up being scarier than the Lich, you know shit's about to go down.
I would argue that's just a case of differing alignments leading to differing evils. The Lich is Chaotic Evil, where as Fern I would argue is Lawful Evil/ Neutral Evil. It's basically comparing a force of destruction to something much more grounded in humanity.

Actually there’s more liches because when the hand fell there was hands going in ALL dimensions meaning there’s thousands maybe millions of lich hands just going about in different realities maybe in one universe there’s a turned sweet pea in another a dead one, there’s so many possibilities

Finn's parkour skills probably increased during his training with Rattleballs and you could see Finn more noticeable in his growth and his physical prowess in the episode Winter Light has he falls into St Patience Pimm's Ice dome
it’s also worth noting that parkour is easier when you have actual obstacles and a path instead of random trees and a hill
I saw this theory that the Lich is actually trying to protect people in his own way. It said that the Lich might be trying to save people from Golb by killing them because when you die in AT you go to a deadworld but when Golb gets you, disappear from reality.
Edit: That is probably why Prismo couldn't fufill Magic Man's wish of getting Margles back.
While I don't think the theory is true, it is still kinda cool.

I love the way that Sweet P and Fern kinda of contrast/parallel each other on this episode.
They're both kind of clones of another person,and both want to be unique individuals,and though Finn wants to help Fern,all he is able to is by making him do things that copy Finn's way,resulting him to be even more similar to Finn,just like the Lich is doing to Sweet P.
At the end,Sweet P denies the Lich's return and legacy;taking down his other self from another dimension and taking in to being himself.
Fern in the other hand decides to embrace the fact that he is nothing but a copy,with no individuality;however,he wants to consume such destiny to the extreme and become the one and only true Finn,by taking down his other self...

I was confused about Fern's ability to change his exterior as well, until I remembered that the grass sword had done just that for 2 seasons, acting as Finn's right arm. I think Fern's right arm changed to a human arm instead of Finn's new metal one in order to tip the viewer off that he has the same powers as the grass sword had when it was a part of Finn, and if it can look and feel like flesh then I don't find it hard to believe it can mimic cloth and metal too.
Dan Of The Hour an easier explanation would be he just changes colour of the grass
I was pissed when the lich was "killed" but then I remembered the countless multiverses the Lich is in now.
i would say that Fern ability to change his arm is a going back to the breezy episode, maybe Finn never got his arm back, but grass sword heald and because of brezzy it eveolved to actually have a ability to mimic his arm.
and that was just foreshadowed then. Maybe ....

That is actually what happened. Finn never got his arm back, that's the reason why he had that thorn on the palm of his hand.
rewatching some of these videos now just cracks me up because of the editing:

Also that one like from the lich about it being the las schoolar of golb and how that hints at the last boss is just top tier.
Every time the lich shows up it's absolutely wonderful.
While Sweet Pea has Billy's bones, I would also like to remind everyone that Finn and the Lich were the same being, at least at one point in time, and thus Sweet Pea was once Finn. At least, that's what I got from the comet episode, both Finn and the Lich were Catalyst Comets and while they were different versions of the comet they still were both the catalyst comet.
I imagine that Glob,Grod,Gob,etc is related to Golb in someway. Also saying that golb's last schoolar means that golb might have had more followers then the lich. That might be the monsters for episode with sweet p and king of ooo

Hmmm... I think you forgot to mention a few important things. Sweet P says he has had nightmares for a long time, and I think that these nightmares were not only triggered by the fact that Lich's alternative hand appeared in Ooo. I think it has to do with the episode of Skyhooks II where LSP has restored everything to "normal". The next fact is that at some point the Lich take over Sweet P's body without fire and fear. As we know from the episode "Gold Stars", the Lich woke up in a boy when King of Ooo and Torronto were torches with the torch and he was afraid, this was not there! After all, Sweet P destroyed only Lich's alternative hand, not his dark nature. And one more thing, you could mention the whole multiverse is now threatened because Lich's hand is every dimension. Besides, great review! I can't wait for Thrre Bucktets reviwe.
Shock Sweet P's nightmares go as far back as the episode where LSP was made to babysit him. At the time Sweet P was having nightmares of being evil and ran away from home and LSP subconciously used her powers to tell Sweet P what his role in reality is. to paraphrase "You are a good and sweet boy, and you are loved." This might've actually strengthened Sweet Ps grasp on his "true" personality as being simultaneously the Lich the last scholar of GOLB and Sweet P the boy who is loved.

it could also be that the lich is a transidmensional entity. he is not an invidual but countless avatars throughout the mulitverse.

Wht makes sweet pea different from his past icrnation, and from farmworld lich, and mabye other liches throughout time?
He has an understanding of people. As hand lich admitted, he knows that he has no complex reason for his actions, that he acts only in purest destruction, for the sake of destruction, as the scholar of golb.
but sweat has experienced emotion, interpersonal interaction. what if this action was not of a sweet boy trying to become a hero, but of an evil who has found a motive for his actions, and that motiff might make him more powerful and cruel than before?
even his manipulation in th form of billy was..... stagnate and imperfect. if he knew billy as more than an idol he would ahve been easily seen through.

I loved how they set up the contrast between Fern and Sweet P who both have a battle of good and evil going on in them and one gave into good while the other gave into evil.
What really gave me an impresion was the fact that the Lich wanted to bring destruction along with Sweety P as equals. I know that he probably saw him as nothing alse but a pawn but it makes me wonder if the Lich actualy has a secret desire for companionship
You either die a villain, or live long enough to see yourself become the hero.
Waiting for the "Sweat Pea Hero Show" Spin off.
Like imagine his internal struggles...imagine how deep and amazing that show would be. So many questions...
Would he age properly? what a joy to see him slowly turn into a giant teen; to see him lose his baby fat; train to be a hero under finn, ADVENTURE TIME CAMEOS; a whole crop of new lovable characters! or maybe he gets transported to a different universe by his inner demon and must fight his way through under a new teacher, similar to finn but not exactly. Uuuuuuuugh so many possibilities.
I feel like alot of characters could have their own spinoff
I liked it, but, having the lich going from the evil creature that leaves a trail of death and is nearly unkillable, undestroyable, inevitable, to having the hand being slain so quickly, even if by sweet P, felt a bit disappointing. I'd had liked to see the lich hand becoming at least a bit more powerful, and struggling more to survive, maybe becoming even more deformed, before it was destroyed.
but sweet P IS the Lich, so it would be easy, if it were Finn on the other hand it would've been something else.
I understand, but, at the same time, I don't see that as a valid reason for the ease he had slaying himself from another dimension. I think we could had been shown even more mental struggle, of sweet P having a harder time supressing his evil nature, as the lich hand tried to control him.
Technically the Lich killed itself.
sorry i havent commented on your other reviews, ive been tired lately and youve really done a great job of covering all the points yourself as usual! and im thrilled to hear your thoughts on this particular episode, as it was one of my favorites of the recent few.
one moment that particularly sticks with me is when finn and fern calm sweet pea down librarian style and fern dismisses his role in defusing the situation by interpreting it as nothing but copying finn. i so badly wish that finn had told him that emulating others is normal, its how people learn, and that fern had made the decision to incorporate his knowledge at that point in time, making it very much his own action. HOWEVER im also glad finn didnt tell him that, because it would have been really disruptive to the scene, and, it could have lessened the building turmoil which was needed for Three Buckets.
also, love your interpretation of the scene where finn delegates the task of watching over sweet pea to fern. really nailed the nail on the head of how intense a situation it was. also interesting insight on finns thought process.
and can i just say how much i LOVE this fucking episode? especially the resolution? sweet pea's entrance was something i actually rewound to watch again because of how great it was. seeing him making the strict choice to be "good" was so unbelievably emotional. and then, watching him vanquish the hand lich, i immediately got the sense that sweet pea is destined for great heroism, probably similar to the magnitude of billys legendary adventures. maybe once hes older he'll start going from universe to universe to wipe out all the evil lich hands. i also got the impression that this was the defining moment at which sweet pea really solidified that destiny. its also a great foil to ferns storyline, for an obvious list of reasons, such as their origins. all in all, i love how this episode was written and executed.

I loved the theme of two creatures born in darkness being given a chance to step towards the light. One embraces it, and the other turns away.
The title card for this episode is great btw, with that lich hand ominously grabbing sweet p's
There is a possibility that the Lich has taken over Sweetpea because how cold Sweetpea was at the end of the episode, with killing the Lich without any hesitation or emotion on his face. Plus there is still the whole thing with the other Lich hands in alternate dimensions. I will say that I disagree with this though, as I think of it more as Sweetpea just embracing the Lich inside of him a little rather than being fully controlled. I also think because of Finn's dialogue that the AT crew want to change up the main villain of the story. With Finn mentioning that he has already killed the Lich 4 times already and that the Lich is so evil it's boring.

Embracing the Cursed will unlock its True Potential. Sweet Pea accepts that he is the Lich himself and initially once a destroyer. And also Finn accepts that the Grass Sword is cursed too, which made him use its unorthodox abilities.

At first I was disappointed that the lich was defeated so easily but looking back it makes sense
a copy of the lich turned good and desired to be as different as their counterpart as possible a copy of finn turns evil and now desires to be as simmular to his counterpart as he can
If it turns out The Lich is just a minion or something of GOLB, I'd honestly be disappointed. The Lich is built up to be the main antagonist who dose thing for his own reasons we can't comprehend. This adds more mystery to the Lich which can make a villan more intimidating, so if his motivations are fully explained that wouldn't be okay with me (unless they make it awsome, which could happem). GOLB has only been built up for 3 episodes, and while they may pit up a good show as the final boss, The Lich fits that role better for me because of everything that has built up to the idea of the Lich being the antagonist of the series climax.

I'd be pissed too. Lich has from the very beginning been established as the ultimate antagonist, the embodiment of evil itself, the essence of the world's destruction. It's not a person you understand, it's a force of nature! You dont get more badass and frighting than that! I still claim that Lich is the greatest villain of any American cartoon show. Unless they cock it up with the ending :(
GOLB being greater doesn't make the Lic any less of a badass. It just makes GOLB more terrifying tbh

I might have missed something, but I've always seen a similarity between the Litch and Billy, seeing sweet p kill the other Litch makes me think as he grows up he will become Billy, a truly great hero, and then somehow transform back into the Litch, for the cycle to be restarted again, later on.

Makes sense to me. Sweet P is the Lich healed by the Citidel's white goop. That Lich was Billy possessed. So in a sense, Sweet P is Billy already, just younger. Bigger question, would Canyon date an older Sweet P?

I know this came out before the ending of the series, but I just feel the need to express this now that I'm watching this because I just discovered this video. I know this comment won't be seen. Anyways, what needs to be understood is that the Lich isn't the skeleton, the lich is the green catalyst comet. One thing we know about the comets is that they reincarnate. The lich was brought back with the bomb explosion, so whatever form the lich was in hadn't died yet, and wasn't going to because the bomb wasn't going to let it. When the bomb went off, it took it's next form, and it possessed one of the corpses at the bomb site. When Finn touched the lich with Guardian blood in the citadel, he wasn't just making it a new being, he was reviving whatever the Lich had possessed. So sweet pea was already a creature in the world of Adventure Time, he just wasn't a prominent thing until later in the chronological story.
I think you missed a very important part of the episode. It is now confirmed that the hand that finn cut off is a sentient part of the Lich. And if you remember a hand was sent to every reality. So would that not mean that the lich was sent to every reality? Personally I dont think we have seen the end of the Lich.
Greel Mindraker were not that far away from the ending so I doubt I think it might just focus on golb

The contrasts between how fern became evil and gave in to the grass octopus's whispers, while Sweet p fights the whispers, is what made this episode amazing. Two plotpoints combined expertly

Sweet pea is the sweetest boy, and he's loved. I'm so happy he grew up to be a giant.
I swear to god, the Lich always terrified me as a kid and he still does now sometimes, especially when his face pops on the screen randomly, like in that one episode from season 3? I can’t remember but it’s when Finn has a dream about Billy, the cosmic owl, and a few other characters. Then The Lich pops up for around two frames in Billy’s place is horrifying to me
I don't know if this was on purpose but I felt like the episode had many callbacks to the season 5 episode Vault of Bones, where Finn and FP are going through a dungeon and Finn's trying to show her that she isn't evil (with her dad whispering evil in her ear). Also, he tells her to do things her way and at first she's pretty destructive but by the end she adapts and figures out how to do things without harming anyone (In Whispers, Fern doesn't manage to do so by the end which is probably a sign that Fern is indeed evil).
Sweet Pea really does turn into the next hero
I'm pretty sure the grass curse is the sole controller of Fern's mind and actions; like, they're the same thing. The Finn inside Fern only provides the grass curse/Fern with Finn's memories, body, and skills, but all Fern's actions are solely based on the grass curse trying to be as cool as Finn.
I love how many times this dude is spot on with theories. First with the fin sword turning into a character and now golb being the final antagonist.

There's still all the other hands that went into the portal. There's a lich hand in every other plain of existence doing glob knows what. Alot of universes may even still have their lich too. And some probably are getting those world's enchiridion.
He's definitely coming back, either through the hand Lich possessing something else or the Lich taking control of Sweet P (if that hasn't already happened). Or both!
Elk, I absolutely adore your videos. They're so in-depth and thought-provoking. I also haven't really seen many good Adventure Time theories on RUclips as of late(although that could be because I don't actively go looking for theory videos; I've just happened to stumble upon a few I've liked), as I think the general fandom consciousness has shifted to Steven Universe. Which is a shame because both shows are deep and excellent and worth analyzing. I've recently decided to get into this RUclips game as a theorist/reviewer, and you are one of my biggest inspirations. Keep up the good work.
HOW fern changes his look is unknown, but it makes perfect sense that he can, don't forget the grass sword was "hiding" as Finn's arm for the entire time between Breezy and the birth of "Grass Finn".
It seems changing his color is simply part of the Grass Sword's abilities after it got infused by both the citadel guardian blood and Breezy's song
I know this has nothing to do with the actual episode but the fact that pb may remember all the things she's done means she and Marcy will both remember Marcy trying to save her and ultimately just giving in so she can be with pb.

The whole subplot caught my attention way more than the actual Lich plot. Yet I really liked this episode.
Still trying to figure out what did the Lich meant when he said he was the last scholar of Golb.
I didn't even know Ron Perlman was the voice of the Lich! I always wondered why the Lich had such a wonderfully buttery smooth voice.

To me, the scariest thing aboutmthe lich is that you can't get rid of him; not even by wishing. Both Evergreen and Fin have tried and failed to wish away the Lich, and while Evergreens failure was mostly circumstantial (Magwood is litterally the scource of all of our problems, worst character ever) Finns wish could NOT be more direct, and still the farm world Lich came into existence. Even another wish from Jake and whatever the heck the maid was couldn't get rid of it forever since its hand still survived! That's ridiculous. It's also implied (but never really mentioned) that there are still,other Lich hands out there in the multiverse, but I like to think that was retconned since they aren't brought up again and it's more comforting knowing the Lich is gone.
My take on why the lich hand did not shapeshift: When we initially see Farmworld Lich in the body of regular dog jake with a lich head, after the portal gems are inserted into the enchirideon and the portal to the multiverse opens, he begins to change into his more original lich shape. I don't believe that farmworld jakes has any shapeshifting powers, nor would the lich possesing him, but since the portal opened he got closer to his true power and began to take on his true shape. The severed hand was merely a lingering part of that unfinished true shape, so it couldn't regenerate without the help of the second lich it assumed it could make out of Sweet Pea.
Also Fern can turn into a human like flesh because that grass has been Finn's fake are for a long time.

I looked it up when ever I finished watching the episode, the grinding of your teeth can come from anxiety. In fact, it said how it can be a direct effect of identity crisis and concerns about the future and yourself.
I'd like to remind you all that the only thing standing between evil inevitability incarnate is sweet pea not listening to the whispers.
I'd love to find out more about golb/lich. Golb is all about chaos, but lich wants to exterminate all life, which is not necessarily chaotic, since it sounds quite an organised thing to do
I just can't help but feel like the Lich/Prismo/Glob storyline won't be properly concluded before the series' end. I hope it is, but it CN's rush to cancel and close the series may be the ruin of some of AT's greatest arcs and story threads.

Golb is a destroyer while Prismo is a transporter.
Prismo doesn't "Grant wishes" but transports you to a universe where what you want is already there. If a universe and all its iterations are destroyed for some reason by Glob then Prismo wouldn't be able to take from or put you there making his "wish granting" useless.

Next thing you know Fern gets possessed and starts to turn into a Lich
I think there may be some significance to Fern's line about Sweet Pea being buried underground. Farmworld Lich was born when the bomb dropped, and appeared to come up from the ground. So perhaps the Lich that became Sweet Pea was also fossilized for a time.
Sweet p eventually gets the liches spirit removed from him but the lich possessed the alternative lich hand for a new body and either got killed or traveled to be in the land of the dead which led to together again

I just realized those things floating around Golb's head look like the rebel that surrounds prismo's time room
Imagine being you and then one day you become a sword, your thoughts trapped inside that sword. Suddenly, you become a talking, walking grass while everybody you know and love treats you like you're not you and somebody else is you.
I have a different take on Sweet pea killing the Hand Liche. While there might still have been a will for Sweet Pea to do good and protect Finn, I think the Liche in him couldn't help but consider the hand to be a lesser version of him. Or even a double. the hand referring to them as "twin kings of ruin" might have been a "proof" of his inferriority. As the ender of all life, the finality there could be only one. there can be anything he could consider his equal. And so he took of that bad copy of him.
There is an interesting parallel to be done with Sweet Pea taking off his doppelgänger and the relationship between Finn and Fern.
Foreshadowing to the beginning of the last episode where Sweetpea is shown as the hero.
That's just what makes the lich a great villain. He is that big of a deal that such extremes need to be taken.

With this talk about "Fern's way" this reminds me of Finn's crisis and doing things his way.
One thing I like about Finn's new sword (forgot when he got it) is that a rapier does require finesse and precision, which Finn has achieved over time, so he doesn't heavily rely on smashing or cleaving swords like he used to.
I love Ron Pearlman's voice... When I was little, I played the first two Fallouts with my dad, and I loved the narration so much... To see him return in one of my favorite shows of all time surely was a blessing. Once you think about it, what are the CHANCES of that?
Regarding Fern's shape changing, remember that this was established back in Breezy. Finn's arm between that and Islands was simply the grass sword in the shape and color of his arm.

I wonder what's the connection between the regrown right horn of Sweet P and the fact that Farmworld Lich originally had both of his horns as well. Especially beause even back then when it didn't even have a host yet, Ooo Lich had both of his horns too when it was just a Catalyst Comet. Yet, for some reason non of his later hosts (both the King and Billy) were able to regrow that right horn.
I think the lych hand can't shapeshift because the farm world Jake only became stretchy when he became the lych, his powers are not the same in the first place no matter how weak the hand might be on its own
I have a theory Golb is prismos boss
StafeeMC Prismo was baffled when he tried and failed to bring back Margles, though, since Golb removed her from existence. I think that Golb is a different cosmic entity than whoever Prismo's boss is.
I’m pretty sure the Lich hand just didn’t use his stretching powers out of overconfidence, because he was shown being able to stretch into an image that casts himself as a shadow puppet

Man there is so much to cover for the upcoming last episodes. I think they won't be able to cover all things, and maybe they don't have to. It'd be super cool if they make another miniseries after the last episodes. Adventure Time Origins like the X-men. Because they need to unveil the backstory. How the World gone wild, how the characters came into existance and how Finn got to the Land of Ooo, who found him on the boat?
