  • Battleship Iowa - Take a walk along Broadway, explore Engine Room #2 and Fire Room #4, and go to Aft Plot and fire a 16" turret gun.
    Update: 4 March 2020 - These below deck areas as well as several others are part Battleship Iowa's guided "Engineer Tour". The tour (previously called "Full Steam Ahead" tour) now covers from Anchor Windless to Aft Steering. I have just posted a video of Engine Room No 4 which will soon be added to the Engineering Tour. See: www.pacificbattleship.com for more details.

    Nice that the ship is being maintained so well and it was nice to remember what I experienced serving aboard New Jersey in the #3 fireroom.

    When I was 13 or 14ish my dad took my down to Fall River Mass. Battleship Cove to see the U.S.S Massachusetts.. What a profound impact that ship had on me. At 44 I still remember that day and everything I saw like it happened this afternoon. From that day on I began my love affair with battleships of the ww1 and ww2 era. How I wished I was born decades earlier so I too could have had a chance to serve on one of these works of art.. Thank you for all you do here!

The Engineering Tour, previously called "Full Steam Ahead", has been expanded. Engine Room No 4 as well as other below deck spaces are part of the expanded Engineering Tour.

    This is so awesome! I stood watch in 4MMR on board the USS KITTY HAWK CVA63. My duty station was the control booth(which I worked my way up to) where I stood throttles. The green wheel is the ahead throttle and the red wheel is the astearn throttle. I recognize some of the guages.....of course. Best duty station. I won that job over two other guys and it became my general quarters station as well. Nothing quite like being 18 and 19 yrs old and having the responsibility of running the #4 screw aboard an aircraft carrier during war time. Thrilling to say the least. That video just brought me back to life. Some of the greatest yrs of my life.

    • @mackydog99
      @mackydog99 3 года назад

      The difference, I just noticed, is that the throttles here don't have handles...speed handles. When doing an UNREP( underway replenishment) the carrier pulls up next to the supply ship, then does what is called a "back down" where you quickly close the ahead throttle and start to crack open the astearn throttle to come along side. Then at 10 knots the replenishment begins. It's a sight to behold from the hangar deck.

    As a retired machinist mate I found that the navy is unfair. I spent an entire deployment standing watches in the engine room six hours on and six hours off in a 120 degree space while administrative personnel stand no watches and work in an air conditioned space and get paid the same. I would not do it over again. It's not surprising that most seaman strikers always tried to be postal clerks.

Therefore, no narration was needed for this presentation. However, The Battleship Iowa has recently instituted guided tours that take visitors into these spaces.
