I have this kit in the same finish. It sounds really nice for many styles, but probably best suited for all-purpose rock and pop, I don't always use all 7 drums but it's nice to have options for different setups, if I want to use all 7 or just one up one down and anywhere in between.
These drums are perfect in my recording studio. I have the mahogany version and 2 extra Renown model Toms for a slightly different sound variation if a recording calls for it.
Very big difference in price between Catalinas and other Gretsch models, especially the USA kits. Is the quality difference that big, because the sound is fine on these. Does it justify the price difference.
the Catalinas ar just made in Asia (China if i'm not mistaken) unlike all the more expensive Gretsch kits which are made in the USA, nevertheless I own one of these kits and you are correct, they do sound really good!
Great to see the rack toms attached to the bass drum and NOT the cymbal stands, or have seperate stands.
Sometimes old styles are best left alone.
I don't like mine attached to the bass
Both ways are good, but for me I prefer the toms mounted on the kick. It looks cleaner, and easier to set up and tear down.
Thanks, Sweetwater! It was a pleasure for Mike and I to work with you on this video.
I am overly satisfied with everything about this kit - ordered it - got it - and I know that it will stay with me forever and a day.
Mike's playing is straight up beautiful music!
Excellent drums. I’ve read a report that a studio engineer liked these drums and thought they were a set of DW drums. They sound really good.

Hard to believe Catalinas are at the lower end of the Gretsch range
Lovey sound, especially at the price.
That’s how good Gretsch are.
Just scored this set. Great value for a Maple set.

I sold the stock snare drum since I prefer the Gretsch Brooklyn snare and the Renown Snare. The kit also sounds great with my 2 Ludwig snares too.
Amazing drums for the price.
A fraction of the price of the Gretsch USA made kits.
What's the quality of the fittings and hardware like, in comparison to the more expensive Gretsch models.
there are no mics on the kit, how did you record that?
either camera's mic or overhead with no eq
+mantzini it's true, how was it possible, to get that sound from the air?
Which heads are you using on this kit? I'd love to duplicate this sound on my Catalina Maple kit I just bought. Thanks!

Renowns are Asian made to my knowledge.

Is this finish a wrap?
Finish
is the Walnut Glaze - Lacquered or wrap?
Lacquer finish - stunning - I bought a kit exactly like this some weeks ago :) It is superb
Not a fan of the small Tom size for your main Tom
I bought these. Very disappointed. Went back to pearl.
how about having a drummer that can play
Ooooooooo!
Mike Johnston is a mentor to many big names. How about not speaking when you don't know what you're talking about?
