Well welll well, I was reading « In the woods, was enjoying it and then surprise surprise! Miss French decided for a large fee I suppose to do a « product placement » Out of the blue, why we don’t know , she tells us what brand of cigarettes ( different) her two heroes smoke. I immediatly stopped reading. This is of course immoral, not necessary and shameful.... you just lost a reader who it happens cares about public health.

Correct me if i'm wrong, the author isn't getting paid for saying a cigarette brand, just like she wasn't paid (presumeably) when she mentions the car brand Land Rover. The different type of cigarettes was just more information about the characters, but hey do what you gotta do, the book I just finished is so good, cheers!

Why would it be immoral to know the brand though? You already know the character is smoking, so knowing the specific brand is not gonna change much. This isn't just Tana French, either, many authors do this all the time. They give super specific details about their characters to ground them more into reality and make them feel like real human beings. Is it important to know what cigarettes they smoke or what brand of napkins they own? No, but it definitely gives a far more detailed image of said characters and their lives. Wait until you discover authors like Stephen King then, that guy gives at least one such detail every few pages, lol.
