Oh, that flanger sound takes me right back to my childhood. And then the synth guitar... Gosh... All spiced up with the sweet and warm degradation of the glorious VHS tape
I'm floored! I had no idea Andy could play blues like that. I wish he'd explore it, I'd love to hear a blues record by him. This video is sort of Spinal-Tap in the way he reveals a hidden songwriting talent.
Oh come on - not that impressive. Blues isn't difficult to play or learn , outright - what's difficult about playing Blues , is playing it "convincingly" .......night after night, putting feeling and heart/soul into it - like Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughn and the other greats ........ Andy Summers' original music is more interesting , to me at least ....
u can tell that andy really likes to play with lots of effects cause he immediately started playing with the pedal again after playing on the clean sound
Filmed at air studios in Montserrat...hurricane hugo wiped the place out in 1989 and its an abandoned wreck now. A real shame as a lot of well known artists recorded there.
5:34 if anybody ever unplugged my guitar like that, I'd punch them straight in the face. It'd be especially satisfying if they had a face as punchable as Jools here.
Amen! No kidding.... the prick asks to hear a style of rift - then unplugs his guitar? Fuck off!!! Andy's often too patient with these prima donas ...?
+Blueduck577, That was pretty ignorant. Someone was kind enough to give an interview and to play guitar for you and he does this to him?!?! I would be honored just to hear him play guitar. I would tell him play whatever you like and please keep playing! I would probably ask for a lesson on the guitar. LOL
While under normal circumstances I’d agree with you completely, Jools was a client of Miles Copeland, was friends with the band, and had already supported The Police at Madison Square Garden as a solo artist and previously in the UK as a member of Squeeze. I’m sure they were pretty tight and there was room for ribbing and silliness. Jools had nothing but respect for them. He’s a super talented musician and television personality.
His sound along with stewart's unique style are what made sting's songs truly great. his solo stuff is painfully lacking without the two. sting's first solo album could of been a classic with the help of andy and stewart.
why the fuck is this guy not ranked up there with page and perry and clapton. maybe hes not as flashy but hes incredibly creative with his riffs and effects.
5:29 OMG! 😱 Jools jokingly pulled Andy’s guitar chord out when he played a funk guitar riff 30 years ago! Ohh, the controversy! I wish Jools did this to the Red Hot Chili Peppers back in 1981! 😂
Andy Summers is literally a guitar master. Read his book One Train Later. Andy paid his dues as a guitar player in many different kinds of bands and support of various types of artists so he can play anything : jazz blues rock and roll of course flamenco etc. He was the secret weapon of the Police to bridge Stewart Copeland's percussive brilliance and Stings formidable songs.
hey thanx! how do u know that? :] Montserrat rang a bell to me..its a place in spain. but then again..seems its not this one :] do u mean this place is south of the U.S? a bunch of islands between Haiti, and Venezuela?
Interesting story: That guitar is no more. The Police were playing a show quite late in the Sync tour and when Andy came to plug it in for a pre gig jam it was dead. The pickups had de magnetised. He got Fender to make a replica but said it never felt the same. Hence the red Strat on the reunion tour!
That's not exactly true. The bridge pickup was demagnetized on their last tour, but Seymour Duncan came to the rescue with a replicated one. Andy did say it never felt quite the same, but he did continue to play it and he was using the Strat before that anyway. He bought the red Stratocaster back in their Regatta De Blanc days on their American tour when they finally started to make a little money. He played the Tele on the reunion tour as well.
I loved the part where they jammed the blues. Sounded like JEremy Spencer. A shame the Police broke up. I think they could have delved into so many styles of music if Sting had let the other guys contribute more. As we know what Stewart Copeland went on to do. Opera.....Ballet...movies scores.....and Andy would have provided Sting with some brilliant jazz backing. HEy ....maybe they can get together and do an album now??!!!!!!
does anyone knows where it was filmed at? doesnt seem like england to me :] seems like t'was filmed while the police were on their peak...but just before breaking up..thats the feeling i get :]
He's not under-rated. He was great and textures and colouring sounds etc and also voicings but his live solos were embarrassing I thought at times. Nice solos in the studio though I grant you. And..............a really nice bloke!
First of a great guitar need not be or have to be a great soloist. Andy is an extremely versatile and innovative guitarist and in the Police wasn't required to do standard issue guitar hero solo histrionics. Perhaps that impresses some fans but actual musicians etc are more discerning. I'm fairly certain Andy Summers could sit in with practically any style of contemporary popular music and thrive. Now that's impressive
I was just waiting for Andy to say "No, this one goes up to 11". Nice to see an interview though where the interviewer actually knows what he's talking about and isn't just fluffing.
Great clip. I always liked Andy's guitar playing. So what if he's not as good a musician as the others. Can you really imagine The Police without him? I sure can't.
A painfully underrated guitarist
Andy and John Goodsall both underrated.
That bring on the night guitar part is just brilliant
my favorite police song
I recommend to listen Andy Summers´ music in his solo career. It is really beautiful.
Oh, that flanger sound takes me right back to my childhood. And then the synth guitar... Gosh... All spiced up with the sweet and warm degradation of the glorious VHS tape
when those 3 got together it was a miracle.
I'm floored! I had no idea Andy could play blues like that. I wish he'd explore it, I'd love to hear a blues record by him. This video is sort of Spinal-Tap in the way he reveals a hidden songwriting talent.

hazor777 As Hendrix said, Blues is easy to play, but hard to feel.
I saw them last week at Fenway and I'd say they're all pretty equal as just pure musicians (most 3 pieces are). Andy was extremely impressive.
He is horribly underrated.
One of my favorite guitarists and favorite sounds.
Andy Summers Rocks!
u can tell that andy really likes to play with lots of effects cause he immediately started playing with the pedal again after playing on the clean sound
Andy looking like a younger cuter Sting.Ive never seen him describing how he plays his guitars before. Very talented. Thank you so much for this!
He looks younger but was 40 in this interview
A really underrated guitarist ,.,
I heart the Bring on the night riff
Filmed at air studios in Montserrat...hurricane hugo wiped the place out in 1989 and its an abandoned wreck now.
A real shame as a lot of well known artists recorded there.
Andy Summers is a great guitar player. Enjoyed this!
Fabulous guitarist. Andy is one of the unique rockers. 🔥👌🏽
Wow andy's synchopation is amazing.
Maybe that's why they sound so good? Stewarts also a synchopation master.
"Did he really just unplug my guitar??!!"
Can’t like this enough!
love the way he plays, so clean
God I absolutely love that Bring on the Night arpeggio.
Jools pulling his lead out at 5:30 is brilliant
3:05 LOL
One of the most underrated guitarists, Andy Summers. I think the blues tune they are doing is Highway 49 from Howlin' Wolf.
Andy!!!!
Damn that sounds beautiful 😩🤟🏻
5:34 if anybody ever unplugged my guitar like that, I'd punch them straight in the face. It'd be especially satisfying if they had a face as punchable as Jools here.
He's too fucking annoying

could have been....
Holy,he has a sweet tone and very effecient player.
are you kidding me? how? andy summers is incredibly underrated
why the fuck is this guy not ranked up there with page and perry and clapton. maybe hes not as flashy but hes incredibly creative with his riffs and effects.
they were amazed with the sound tech from then and we have all that now and more for cheap in a compact size its amazing how far we come
Love Andy!
You gotta love a guy who has a "you killed kenny, you bastards" stick on his guitar at 65 years old!
5:29 OMG! 😱 Jools jokingly pulled Andy’s guitar chord out when he played a funk guitar riff 30 years ago! Ohh, the controversy! I wish Jools did this to the Red Hot Chili Peppers back in 1981! 😂
It's so sad to see that balcony and know that great studio is in ruin.
dust in the wind
Who says he's underrated? I always thought he was great 👍
Jools Holland
24/01/1958
63 años (64)
I wanted to hear more of the funk playing
Andy Summers
31/12/1942
79 años (80)
I think one person hit the dislike button by accident. How could anyone dislike this?
these guys probably knew one another well as they toured the us under the same management...
his guitar sound is fucking awesome
i dunno why but jooles reminds me of pee wee herman in this video.
Well. I'll. Be. Andy Summers is a bluesman? Color me impressed.
Andy Summers is literally a guitar master. Read his book One Train Later. Why did they inhale helium before the interview?
great! what amplifier and speaker did Andy Summer use to record Message in a Bottle in the studio?
This whole interview on Jools part seems rather condescending. Maybe its just me.
He always comes across like that cos he's never very happy in interviews
they knew eachother and were friends
I have that same shirt and I wear it on Fridays at the office!
@shawnmetts wait... I heard that andy used an A/DA flanger in the early years of police..
hey thanx! how do u know that? :]
Montserrat rang a bell to me..its a place in spain. but then again..seems its not this one :]
do u mean this place is south of the U.S?
a bunch of islands between Haiti, and Venezuela?
>>hey thanx! how do u know that? :]
Gee, maybe because that's what it says on the DVD case?
Was this interview shot on Montserrat?
Yes, during the ghost in the machine recording I think
That was Sting yelling at Holland at 5:35. Probably "wanker" or "cunt".
That Tele tho!!!! Hot damn!! That has to be one of the most iconic Telecasters in Rock History
Interesting story: That guitar is no more. The Police were playing a show quite late in the Sync tour and when Andy came to plug it in for a pre gig jam it was dead. The pickups had de magnetised. As I recall Andy has a few guitars encased in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and owns several vintage guitars.
I know! The fuckin cheek of him hahaha!
I was wondering the same thing
Andy says what he used at 2:27
I loved the part where they jammed the blues. Sounded like JEremy Spencer. A shame the Police broke up. like edge, a true texturalist
well not underrated by me, I think he is an incredible guitarist!
does anyone knows where it was filmed at?
doesnt seem like england to me :]
seems like t'was filmed while the police were on their peak...but just before breaking up..thats the feeling i get :]
@LewisWatsonn That will be my wedding song
where can I get a t-shirt like that?
so cool .......african child//// bring on the night
where does he say that? I want to see it haha..
where? i missed it!..what time?
3:06
classic
why does look so tall in here
what he's doing at 3:05 ????
He's not under-rated. He was great and textures and colouring sounds etc and also voicings but his live solos were embarrassing I thought at times. Nice solos in the studio though I grant you. And..............a really nice bloke!

Right! I didn´t know he was so good outside reggae!
Which list was that?
Yes, that was funny. Jools Holland is one of the greatest interviwers ever in rock/pop. I love his show.
I'm just dumb struck!
I was just waiting for Andy to say "No, this one goes up to 11".
Nice to see an interview though where the interviewer actually knows what he's talking about and isn't just fluffing.
He should turn his Marshall stacks to 10 and scare the living s%#$ out of Jools.
unplugging guitars is a naughty trick well known musicians seem to do to play a joke on each other occasionally
yes.... it's a bit shocking
They were friends, just messing around. No biggie.
@daftload didn't even make rolling stones top 100
Great clip. I always liked Andy's guitar playing. So what if he's not as good a musician as the others. Can you really imagine The Police without him? I sure can't.
He’s just as good as the others. I don’t know what drugs you’re on.
ripped t shirt
lol 3:06
UNDERRATED?!?!?
NOT BY ME!!!!!!!!!!!
DJ
andy is the weakest of the 3? LOL. he is the sickest guitarist ever
omg! even so! this guy has no shame... :\
two very talented people....but jools holland doesn't seem impressed by any of them.
Looks like he's wearing one of those "Who Farted??!" t-shirts... guess he wasn't making too much cash there yet.
Watch some of his lessons on youtube and you'll get what I mean. Personally, I like him, but it gets kind of annoying.
A very sloppy guitarist
