the aluminum end that had a flat side was designed for this top latch where there is no side access to snap it into place. Guessing you pinched it to squeeze the entrance. Please post where you sourced your repair parts. I don't come across these.

On the other side door I can open the door from the inside but not the outside. What would cause that?
The cable end on the outside handle probably broke.
