  • Covid...NO Ciguatera...YES
    It took a little humility on our part to make this video. After catching a King Mackeral we have come down with the dreaded Ciguatera food poisoning. It has not been a fun couple days on Rum Tot.
    We hope that by spreading a little information on our symptoms and experience that we can educate not only ourselves more, but maybe you too.
    We filmed this the same day as posting, so it's as current a video as can be. We are going to continue resting up and hopefully will be feeling much better very soon. It's been quite an experience.
    As always, thanks for watching.

    Regarding predatory fish the toxin is stored in the head, intestines, liver and other organs. If you clean the fish well and cut fillets you should be fine.

    I just learned about this now so I’ll learn to be careful with those predatory fish in that area.

    hello, thank you for sharing this! Similarly, my family and I contracted Ciguatera in the Bahamas December '21 and before that I had never heard of it. I share all of the same symptoms you 2 have been experiencing. I would love to be able to chat with you more in depth -- as I have found it helpful to hear other people's stories, symptoms, timelines, etc. I just emailed you all at the email listed on your about section!

    My wife, our 2 kids and my in-laws all got Ciguatera, we bought a fish from Montague fish Market Nassau Bahamas, the fish looked like a normal red snapper, but when we chose it and the merchant pulled it out we noticed it had a long snout that was hidden, when the guy cleaned it, he chopped the whole snout off, we thought this was very strange but we paid, left, went home, cooked it in the oven, it was a large fish maybe around 4kg. Anyways we all got sick, immediate symptoms and then the worst still came afterwards. It is now roughly 6 months later and I still have symptoms. If I drink anything alcoholic, even a single beer, my feet get so itchy I could scratch the skin off. This was and still is by far the worst food poisoning we've ever experienced . A friendly warning to people buying fresh fish here in the Bahamas. I don't know enough to advise on how to avaiud it but I think you should never buy a large fish, I think under 2kg is safe, but perhaps I'm wrong so do your own research and don't take my word for it. Ciguatera SUCKS!!!

      Wow, terrible. I have heard many stories like this since we published this video. I think we got very lucky, we recovered after a month, and have had no symptoms since. Thankfully! We also learned to not keep any big fish for sure. I agree, it was the absolute worst! Hope you are continuing on your recovery and feeling better.

    Did you follow a special diet after the symptoms? Are you back eating fish?

      We probably should have, but not really. It's recommended to stay away from chocolate, coffee, and alcohol. In other words, nearly impossible for us 😂. We were both sick for about a month and luckily have not seen a return in symptoms since. And we still love to eat fish.

    How do you feel now? Are you fully recovered?

    • @AmyandChrisSailingRumTot
      @AmyandChrisSailingRumTot  2 года назад

      We are fully recovered, yes. It took about a month to feel like we were past it. And almost 2 months to completely stop feeling random symptoms. They would just pop up on occasion, lasting for a half a day. But we have been fully recovered since then. I think we are one of the lucky ones, maybe a healthy lifestyle helped us? I've heard many stories since this video posted of symptoms lasting 6 months for some folks.
