An incredible family from the neighborhood of Albi accepted me and my brother from Ukraine as victims of the Choronobyl disaster. It was '99. This experience left me with extraordinary memories. Incredible people, incredible city, incredible country. I was too young to express my gratitude for everything this family did for us, so I will say it now - THANK YOU!

i was astagiere at restaurant L'esprit du vin in 2008 and also enjoyed my meals, party at retaurant L'epicurean! Missing Chef David Enjalran & Chef Rikard Hult! Great Memories!
An 👽 dropped in Albi could be forgiven for thinking they’d landed in Tuscany; and may need to readjust their GPS system. The town on the Tarn with its crumbly red-brick cityscape is a gorgeous place. Sure, it feels like (is) a provincial backwater where even the bees take things easy, but that doesn’t detract one iota from its langourous pulchritude. The key to it, for me, is the harmony of its central old core. Sure, the old cathedral looks like a big dominant blunder on the hill (it’s nicer inside), seemingly overwhelming the town with its generous bulk, but I assure you, stand up close to it, and you will have a new respect for cathedral builders. My one and only complaint about Albi, aside from the cathedral-on-steroids, is the lack of a central square. I searched in vain (I may have missed it) for an open suntrap spot to while away an afternoon sipping pastis and (pretending I was) insouciantly smoking a Gauloise. Luckily, Montauban, Albi’s near-neighbour, in film-setesque Place Nationale, was able to provide that square Albi was lacking.
There's a central square with fountains, benches under trees and a few terrasses, nothing grandiose but practical and refreshing when a pause is needed, it's "the jardin national" in place du Vigan.

Looking at it, it doesn’t have the feel of a regular enclosed Plaza Mayor, but I may be wrong. One of the many reasons I adore France are the squares dotted all around the towns and cities, and I just felt Albi lacks a centrepiece square a la Place Nationale in Montauban, for example. Albi in toto, however, is in my top 10 most beautiful towns/small cities in the whole country. It’s partly to do with the beautiful ochre colour of the buildings. As is Montauban, which is criminally underrated, in my opinion.👍😉
I've seen in more than one documentary--mostly French ones--that Albi's cathedral was intentionally meant to look more like a fortress than a place of worship, hence its super thick walls, and its few and small windows. You might have noticed but the red or pink brick that dominates the city is common throughout nearby towns along the Tarn and vicinity. Nearby Toulouse as well. It's a brick which some in France call "brique romaine" (roman brick) or "brique foraine", to distinguish it from the "brique du nord" (northern brick), which you find in parts of Normandy and Hauts-de-France region (and countries north/northeast of France).
