@@olsenautofix the car is already in pristine condition as is. While DIY is cool, especially when done this good- some things shouldn't be messed with. @@FOURfabrication ive just watched the video. You did a good job once again. Again, im not sure shift knob needed changing but indeed it matches tastefully and im assuming key is next on the list lol. Perhaps if i were you i would've made custom steel "dogleg shifting diagram" to match the wheel vibe rather than to match center cap for the horn. P.S. i drive a w124 ce with only 70k km on the clock and its quite an attention grabber despite being nothing special. Despite the low mileage however its in significantly worse condition than yours. Even if you wont show flaws on video and are aware car is not museum quality you should take great pride in both machine itself and your work (DIY and maintenance) over it. Cheers
This was absolutely worth dedicating almost 40 minutes to. There's something about hand crafted parts in an old Bavarian car that just cant be replicated in modern cars, even though that wheel is now the most "modern" thing on your E28, as well as the satisfaction of looking at something like that and getting to say "I made this." Beautiful work, dude.
Seeing this video reminds me that we all should do in life what makes us happy. There is more than just working your 9 to 5 job and other repetitive things. This guy has a fabulous vintage car and spend a lot of time and passion to create a unique steeringwheel with his own hands for one of the things he loves most....
Exactly.Finding a hobby, a passion, that makes you come home from work (or school) happy and excited instead of tired and miserable is great. If you can also find a job that you love, you're pretty much set for life.
E28 has a special place in my heart as it was my first car as a 16 yo, had 247k miles, but you couldnt kill it. I appreciate your craftsmanship and producing a very relaxing video, thank you.
I had to do a double-take when I heard a shout-out to my previous manager in one of your videos. I asked him about it and he said yeah that's me! I already knew he had good taste but it was funny to hear a name I recognized. Great channel!
I loved how personal and meaningful the wheel is, from the inline 6 cuts and the window shaped cuts to the wood choice. Very well done and well documented, thank you!!
I wished you had kept it with the original metal finished. It already looked really nice. Great job showing us the process of making a steering wheel. 👍 thanks!!!
Great job. You used the same techniques I did about 15 years ago. I made a steering wheel for my brothers mahogany speed boat. Really brought back memories. I even clamped the boards with pipe clamps like you did. I built one more recently and basically made an octagon with the wood and tenoned the sections together. I also rabbited the inside so the split rim halves wood hide the outer section of the aluminum rim.
Holly snack bars!!! Great craftsmanship!! I to wish I had access to the equipment. So many ideas in my head . An too many people “ well that’s custom. It’s gonna cost ya.” Sorry. Excellent video as well . The wheel looks beauty Mr.! An women wonder why we like tools so much!
from start to finish this video is everything i needed it to be, i recently got into wood working and have purchased more wood working related tools than most people have, i also have a love for vintage bmw as ive owned well... ten of them now including an e28, a 740i e38 that i did an as close to oem manual swap as i could using actual 740i/6 drive shaft and shift linkage, an e39 with aubergine individual interior, several e30's and my current bmw a humble 98 328i convertible. i really loved this video especially the ending cruise, thank you so much and i cannot wait to see what other content you have.
Nice job. AND nice shop. It's awesome to have access to such great tools. I suppose that one could build this at home using readily available hand tools but fit sure would take a lot longer. Great vid.
Being an absolute sucker for wooden steering wheels myself (got Hella one made by MoMo with black brushed spokes) this is one hell of magnificent result! Interior shines with such a bespoke detail! Well done!
Came out very prety! better looking than 99% of the wheels on the market! Also, this video makes me as close to buying an e28 again as the Mazda is parked in 35:20. Man, I miss mine.
Thanks! Yeah Ideally I would have been able to do an offset but it would have involved calculating how much larger to make the spokes to bend them and weld them to the rim
all 134 dislikes are for the dudes/gals who cant make their own. This is beautiful! Even if its not your taste lets see a hater makes something better. Good for you man! Also Nojus Bobas is freaking spot on but make is a weighted wood shifter shifter!
This is very interesting and enjoyable to watch, I've never seen a video like this! If you put a DIY steering wheel in your car here in Germany, the TÜV would say something along the lines of "sieht gut aus, aber WAS FÄLLT DIR EIN, WARUM VERSCHWENDEST DU MEINE ZEIT, DEIN AUTO WIRD STILLGELEGT UND DU KOMMST INS GEFÄNGNIS". They don't like DIY on cars lmao
you should make a shifter knob that matches the wheel
please do a custom upholstery on interior. i will sponsor you!
And never drive without gloves again 😅

One of the rare cases where RUclips recommended gets it right. Awesome work, stellar video!
32:23 this guy has the original radio in his 80s car and a drink on the dash -> he will never sell his car
I have an e30 and there isn't a single cup holder in the car. You got to get creative with drinks lol.
would be a big mistake. given the condition and the low milage this car is in. hell thats a lot of money!
I had an e30 and kept it all original, how it’s supposed to be no drinks just pure driving
@@dillanmistry I didn't meant drinking in the car would be a mistake. I meant selling the car would be a big mistake 😅.
Sorry for not clarifying.

also completely illegal in Germany
Nice point about the wheel being most modern part of the car. I really liked that observation.

in germany we say "It looks very nice, good job" but TÜV says "Kein Belastungsgutachten, keine Zulassung" and this is sad

That’s why you keep the original stearingwheel and put it back in for a day every two years 😂

When CNC techniques meet hand-craft, I click. When the final product goes into a BMW 5 Series, I like.
that was a pleasure to watch. btw nice shop and tools
Amazing!

Great level of craftsmanship, using modern technology to restore a classic vehicle!!!
What a nice piece of wood. Excellent workmanship
A life time hand job.
Congratulations, I'm your Fan!
One of the best wheels ive seen in a car! Love the walnut too. Suits the car perfectly 👌🏼😎
I normally don't care for BMW's, but damn is this one classy

That workshop is heaven!

Didn't realize that, wtf? :D
i cant comprehend how much i love the e28, its been my dream car for i dont know how many years, its just... beautiful, simply art
Me too, my dad drove a 528e when I was a kid so a pearl beige e28 interior just feels like home and something about the boxy shape is magic

I’m amazed to see TengTools ratchets in America. Well done on not having Husky shite or overpriced Snapon. Greetings from Ireland.
When i stripped down my Golf Mk4 interior trims and painted them i felt like a king. This is frustrating. Awesome work.
Damn this shit was amazing, you need more subs and views. And I agree with another comment, a matching shift knob would look sick
