Just magical - historic meditation. A certain grace in a much less populated world. Communing rather than carving with narcissistic fervor. Many thanks.👍
Gotta love that bamboo ladder into the cave! My first trip was in '78. Sereval trips and years latter how the place has changed. What about the restaurants / shops at Nusa and the boat ride to the break....ah memories
Yeah, those old boards just wouldn't hold on the steeps like they do now. Great footage, great time to be alive in the water, thank you so much for the post.
Very cool. Now days anyone can get footage like this with cameras like the gopro and such. Back when you filmed this it must have been pretty rare to see someone filming out in the surf. Cool video.
Too bad Bali didn't stay like that longer. I went there in '85, and it was way more developed. But nothing like it is now. Some of the best times of my life
Ala Moana bowls was training ground for Gerry @ Pipe, grinding lefts. Mucho Gracias monsieur Tissot. You give me inspiration to capture more film. It certainly wasn't easy back then.. I have no excuse now.
Just unbelievable, what an amazing film! It's not just nostalgia when I say that this is better than anything I've seen in the last 10 years! The footage at Aala Moana is amazing-really gives you a feel of what surfing is about. I love the footage of Bali as well. I first went there in 92 and I thought I was too late then, although Uluwatu was still relatively undeveloped. When I last returned in 2003 massive changes were apparent but like one person comments its still a wonderful place. Thanks
Only been there twice: in '78 and '00. Barely recognized Kuta and Nusa Dua with all the changes and was sad to see Uluwatu so commercial. The ocean is still amazing though! I have more from '78 and my brother has some as well which I'll post at a later date
Beautiful film and camerawork. I loved seeing uncrowded Honolua and Haleiwa... and with interesting perspectives. Back in the day - waterhousings were EXPENSIVE and hard to work with. Kudos.
What a great movie guys - I only had a poster of Uluwatu from a magazine next to my bed at that time i started surfing in 77 - it must have been really cool to have it like that :-E
Looks like I'm a little late coming across this video. Brings back memories. Tell your brother Craig I said hi. He got a great water shot of me at Padang in 1980.
@@angkor5 Craig! Doing okay thanks. Yes - those were cherished moments. Glad we were on it back then. Quick story to share with you. I was in the SURFING MAGAZINE office with Flame back in the 80's. They had just published an article on NIAS, and I pointed out to Larry one black and white shot of a regular foot in a right barrel. I told him no way that barrel was Nias. He just laughed and told me it was actually ME at Padang (that shot of yours)! He said he just flopped that shot and called it Nias because it made the artcle work better. I remember being pissed 'cause I got no surfing credit for such a great barrel shot!
classic vintage stuff... thanks for sharing! I need to find my super 8 footage from Oahu in '84 (which has been transferred to VHS at least) and convert for uploading!
nice footage, thanks for posting (seems there were as many drop-ins back in the day as now, maybe more!) btw surfed Honolua in January 81 - what a place!
great memories! I was there for several months in 79 and 80. I went back in 91 and didn't like it al all. I guess you can never go back eh? Pity the surfers that go there now. They have no idea waht it was like to be at Ulu with just a few guys. It was an epic just to get there! Guys like Peter McCabe were the pioneers only a few years earlier to first surf the place.
hello, I´m doing a research on Venezuela's surf history that some day after I finish writing the script, pretend to make a movie, my opera prima... but there is so little about old school surf days here. I have found some data about managers of the macuto sheraton hotel, coming from USA to work there around 1970, 1973 but, haven't been able to get on the track of them...
My son forwarded this great footage. Wish you would have had more, but considering how hard it was back then to shoot film and process it (especially the shots taken in the water) ..we are all lucky to get this four minutes. Thanks! Hope to see more of your trip from back in the day ..especially Bali. Do you have anything else of Kuta or from Bali's inland villages? I didn't start going to Bali untill 2001 ..and so missed visiting an undeveloped Bali.
I found this video of yours and thought that may be, just maybe you kew some one or heard of some one that just by those life things had come to my country on those years to surf... if theres any thing you can help me with... thanks!!! ;)
This footage is fantastic. How could I go about using this footage in a music video? Would be happy to compensate, it's just so perfect for what I want to do.

The hard life of a surfer. Where do I drop of my resume. For this job🤙🤙🤙

Beautiful film and music. I'd like to visit Bali but I'm afraid i'd be greatly disappointed now from what I read about the vibe in the water.
Too bad Bali didn't stay like that longer. I went there in '85, and it was way more developed. But nothing like it is now. Some of the best times of my life
Swayzeo Yes, There were amazing times. I wrote about this if you’re interested. briantissot.com/2015/04/22/surfing-bali-in-the-1970s/
Honolua, 1979, my winter surf spot, can't imagine I wasn't out the day you filmed this... thank you for the memories....

thanks for uploading this loved seeing bali in years past ..my wifes from the uluwatu ..sad to see the natural landscape developed now ..

Thank you for posting this amazing video. The song fits perfectly to the film. I've been watching this for weeks now.
Old friend, what bliss to watch and listen, nice work. I remember when you were there, I was in Canada.
In all honesty this is probably my favorite piece of media that I have had the honor of stumbling upon on youtube, thank you Tissots
awesome video, thank you so much

This is just beautiful. You can have as much fast-cut editing and competition surfing as you like, but this does it for me.
lovely video. really well edited. enjoyed it very much. thanks.
an inspiration..just started video captures of some buddys in local surf,
Beautiful film and camerawork. I loved seeing uncrowded Honolua and Haleiwa... and with interesting perspectives.

absolutely beautiful! shame bali isn't as empty and clean as it used to be...

Hi Steve, hope you are doing well! Those were great times for sure. Where are you living now? Craig

And look what these videos did to bali. Oh so sad to see paradise lost!
I wouldn't blame us. If we didn't capture it's beauty back then, it would only be a distant memory. Social media has had a way bigger impact...

That's Cheyne Horan at 3:01 minutes at Haleiwa with his unique tight surfing & tube snap.

Such a different vibe in those days. More "outlaw".
